Hi guys, just wanted to touch base and check that you are all in good health and high spirits. I have been watching your videos from the beginning and look forward to your next adventures. I hope you are all well and happy and look forward to any information you can pass on to me about when you will set sail next. Best always Peter Reynolds Adelaide.

Hey Peter, how are you? We are both well and getting excited about returning to Europe early next year. The plan is to return to Turkey in Feb/March and upgrade the boat. We are both able to get the vaccine now so will do shortly before applying for a leave pass from the government. We haven't explored Turkey very much, so plan on sailing Turkey in 2022. I am actually uploading our next video today, 1 of the last before we left Turkey in Dec 2019. As you know there is very little travel we can do in Australia, but we are lucky we are situated on the Gold Coast. Hope all is well with you in Adelaide, keep in touch :) Jase and Trace

Hi Alan again, Symi is my all time favourite Island, but the main harbour town is very narrow and deep, 20 meters in the middle, so must let out plenty of chain. As you found out, and also funnels the wind along the moorings making it a bit tricky when anchoring.also the leather shop owned by my dear friend Takis, is a must do when in Symi. The other beautiful anchorage is just south of Pedi on east coast called St George or Thessalonia,drop dead gorgeous Bit late passing on this info but may be useful at a later date, Kind regards Alan Kiwi Skipper (Greek Sailing Holidays)

Sailing Kawai supposed to be back in September this year, but my clients are worried about the increase in the Syrian refugee situation so may postpone till next year now. Safe sailing, Regards Alan

Hi thanks for sharing your adventures, could you please try to sort out the loud music and very soft speaking. I find it hard to get the volume to a level where I can hear what you’re saying.

Hi guys, is it possible for you to share some of your books and resources that you have used to help you navigate and enjoy the Mediterranean coastline and possibly general sailing books etc.
@SailingKawai
@SailingKawai 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Peter 😀, yeah no worries - the main resource we use is navionics as an app on the ipad, it has all the anchorages marked and many reviews from other sailors. From there you can judge a lot about the protection, it usually tells you the type of bottom (sand, mud, weed etc), depths, amount of space, shops/restaurants etc ashore. We also look at google maps and the satellite imagery of the area to check the anchorage and access ashore. Rod Heikell's Greek waters pilot has also been helpful, along with websites such as noonsite & cruisers wiki. For things to do and enjoying local cuisines we usually check out tripadvisor and google to find local websites or blogs with more info. General sailing books - the Complete Sailor isn't too bad and again we usually look at online resources such as Captain Johns tips and check youtube/google for anything specific we are trying to find out. We haven't purchased either of these books yet but apparently they're good - Boatowner's Mechanical and Electrical Manual Nigel Calder and Don Casey's Sailboat Maintenance Manual. Hope this helps Peter, let us know if we can help further 😃.

I've been in 60 knots with a 60lb CQR & all chain rode in sand, a Mantus should hold even much better. Really depends on what the bottom is. The thing I don't like about the Mantus are how the exposed bolts hold a large accumulation of gunk in the middle of the anchor if you're in mud or mud & sand. If the wind switches 180 degrees the resetting of the anchor can be "iffy" due to the anchors inability to shed the large clump thats attached to it & thus it won't bury itself again. The Spade or the Ultra anchor are superior for this reason and are my "go to" anchors. The Spade breaks down like the Mantus for storage as well but has a smooth surface that enables a good & fast reset. Food for thought. For a serious situation with a weather front where the wind will back on you, a Mantus would be a ways down my list for a primary anchor especially if anchored in anything other than really good clean sand with no mud component. Love your music choices. Get an external remote mic. Good luck & good sailing!
@SailingKawai
@SailingKawai 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Mike! Thanks for your comment, very informative. We had heard Ultra was also a good anchor but didn't know the reasons you mentioned and yes we have definitely noticed the Mantus storing mud/sand on the bolts! So far so good with the holding but we have tried to stick with anchorages with good bottoms :) Glad you love the music takes lots of time to find good copyright free songs! Thanks again and maybe we'll see you on the water!
