With enough miles, you too will find not enough water under your keel! It happens to all of us!! Sand is better than rock!!! Soft mud is great, provided you have a high tide in the near future. We have had to beach a boat on a mud flat during a hurricane. Enjoy! You are now a true sailor.

Im not even really into sailing, I come from cars/racing (mostly drag/autocross racing) and have always had a love for the water/cruise ships/speedboats. So when i found your guys channel I was surprised because these videos are like little vacations, getting to sail and see the world with you guys. Places I may not ever see or know about otherwise and thats why Im a sub. P.S. the quality of video you guys produce while on the ocean with limited resources are top notch and make many people's look sub par considering the conditions.

Tip for getting your self of a shallow bank. have a couple of anchors with just rope on, something like a 20kg anchor for your size boat, take one out about 50 yrds with the dinghy and another 75 to 100 yards use the close anchor first and pull like crazy (you might be able to use a winch) the boat will move backwards once you get to the end of the close one, move to the other pull tight and tie it off so you can assess if you will need to drive another anchor out to continue the prosses or if the next 25 to 50 yards will be enough. This has saved me a few times while trying to get in before I have enough tide or I I'm late getting back and miss the tide.

Aw guys!!! Yeah no matter how seasoned of a sailor and even with the newest and most tested technology we are human and will still find a way to run aground! Thankfully for me I’ve found a sandy bottom. Still survey the damaged and report to insurance if you do happened to be insured in the waters where you ran aground! A tremendous amount of help can be substantiated especially for those mates who gave you a hand! Y’all prove that the world is still Absolutely beautiful and full of humans who appreciate life and all of its unplanned experiences! Steady sailing!! ❤️❤️❤️

What I like about you two is how you show what's it really like on a sailboat, plenty of highs followed by more lows... Keep up the great work!!!

Night watches: I stick with a good 360° look around every 10 minutes. The reason is that if you do the math on a 30 foot high tanker or ship and you at 5-10 feet off the water, and add in the curvature of the earth, the first possibility of seeing something is about 12 minutes. If I am gobsnocking tired, I set some kind of alarm at the helm for every 10 minutes that for sure will wake me up. Fear is also a good motivator. Have seen dismasted monohulls and shaken crews who perhaps didn’t have a good night watch. This 10 minute strategy served me and our family well for 8000 nm in the Caribbean on a 43’ cat.

Running aground can happen even with the best of intentions. I've also experienced it. After sailing in the Darwin to Ambon Ocean Race and our yacht ran aground. After the race we secured the yacht to a mooring and went to land for some well deserved celebratory drinks. At some point we noticed that our yacht was getting very close to the shore line. Rushing back to the boat we realised that the mooring had come unstuck. We were still tied on, but no longer attached to land. After much stress and a risky situation boarding super close to rocks from a dingy, in waves we got on and freed the yacht from danger. Luckily, the keel was the only part to make contact and we could motor off. It can happen outta the blue and not just in shallow waters. I'm glad that I, like you guys, ended up with no major damage, a life lesson and a story to tell! Love the videos and hello from Wintery Australia!

Hang around sailboats long enough and sooner or later you run aground. When I did it I was in Friday Harbor, North of Seattle, lots of deep water all around and one rock and I managed to find it with my keel. I think my ego was more damaged than the boat but I got over it.

Gee, I don't remember that rock, I'll have to check the charts again. Is there a beacon or buoy? I've been aground three times in 5 years on three different boats, usually while racing. Never fun.
@clayz16 жыл бұрын
spelunkerd It has been at least 20 years since then. But I remember a rock in the straight on approach to Friday Harbor. It was charted, so avoidable. You could go right over it at high tide (if driving a stinkpot). The story that sticks in my mind is: it was knocked down a fathom or two with explosives and is no longer a hazard.

I have a tip about sleeping. At least for me, its having an active mind. So I follow a train of thought that's worked for me for a few days. First is thinking about a scenario that you don't know about, in which you don't allow yourself to want, and avoid predictable patterns by following unexpected things. And before you know it you'll drift away into a deep sleep.

My motto on or about the water and boats, never run faster than you are willing to fall or whack your head into something. I have a friend who did not follow that rule and over a number of days on a sailing trip had fallen on her tail bone 3 times, almost all jumping onto docks. She ended up flying home because of the pain and still suffers from the beating she gave her self. Take care my friends. Especially when short handed. Two only on overnight runs can wear you out fast. Love your channel. Play safe.

We built little mini transat boats for singlehanded ocean racing... so, obviously we sleep offshore when we are alone. We TRY to sleep for about 20 minute stretches, lots of them.... but as you pointed out, offshore there aren't very many "obstacles" to contend with. "Maybe" we sleep longer. ;) My worst sleeping "accident" while singlehanding was about 20miles outside of Bermuda. I fell asleep and only woke up because of a wind shift and lots more wind... I could see the lights of the island when I woke up. Very, very frightening. Don't tell anyone. ;) That wasn't as bad as a friend, however, who woke up when his boat was on the rocks in Horta. Oops.... sucks to have to say "I ran into the azores".

Drinking coffee while on watch might help? It helps me stay awake for sure. I used to write stuff (things to do, random thoughts, etc.) on a note pad when I was on watch in the middle of the night and feeling sleepy, it would keep me awake pretty well.

Hey Riles mate! Sorry to see about your leg! Nasty one! #boatlife i guess 😥 To come back to your question, when i was singlehanding the med i ran some calculations to see how long i could sleep before a 20 knot ship would reach me from the time it would appear on the horizin. I figured about 20 minutes so i slept in the cockpit or saloon with an eggtimer. After about 40-50 hours of sailing i started sleeping thru the alarm out of sheer fatique like you did so i would definately advise cruising along anchorages so you can just stick the hook in whenever you feel you get too tired to keep hooning along. Best of luck with your leg and make sure to check those ruddershafts after your grounding. Didnt look to dramatic though you'll be allright! Greetings from the Foxy Lady

My biggest concern falling asleep on night watch is merchant vessel traffic close aboard the islands. Many of these large ships have skeleton crews or even worse may not have a bridge watch (or one guy sleeping in the pilothouse) when motoring on auto-pilot. But it happens to the best of us and we can only learn from those mistakes and hope nothing goes bump I the night!

Hey Riley I can relate to your night watch issues... myself I work on a Cruiseship holding watch, of course the night watches are the hardest to stay awake.. but try to get into a small sleeping pattern before you do any overnight trips...I know its not always possible but try and rest before doing any night watches. Its very dangerous to fall asleep on watch on a boat with no alarm systems or pre-warnings and the fatigue can really knock you of the chair. Hope this helps a little, good luck to you and Elayna.
