Good deal. Not as good as a free Honda engine but definitely a good deal. However my favorite thing on the boat is still the red bathing suit. The added weight is probably the bronze under the chrome.

It's not the thin layer of chrome but the bronze it's on top of! The others are anodized aluminum so much lighter. Enjoy they look like a great set! Also you can never have a winch that's too big!
@SailingMillennialFalcon2 жыл бұрын
Ahhh, that makes sense. I knew the extra weight was as a result of the chrome but I didn't know how or realise it was bronze underneath. Thanks for the new knowledge 🙂

To Chief Engineer Khiara, the crew member who does the major repairs while Captain A dam studies. HA HA. I noticed that a couple of your comments concerning the new winches suggested doing a full strip and service before installing. Good call. Two days ago I removed 8 winches from my 42yo yacht I recently bought, and brought them home. I put the main 2 winches in a bag and could barely lift the bag, they’re heavy. Now for the servicing, they haven’t been serviced for a very long time, all have some part of them “not working”. Those are good winches you found. Well done. I’m looking for two self-tailing ones (about #40-42) as I currently have none and love to solo sail. Love your videos. Fair winds, Elaine.

We really like following your adventure! I hope the winches make the difference you are looking for. You probably know this, but just in case...the number is the force multiplier. 44 means 1N of force at the winch handle will put 44N of force on the line. This means that the difference in power between a 44 and a 42 is pretty small - about 5%. The physical size doesn't make much difference. We have monster sized 55s that are way bigger than a modern 65.
@JCrook10282 жыл бұрын
Ouch, I hope the small increase makes a noticeable difference at least.
@SailingMillennialFalcon2 жыл бұрын
It's the biggest that would fit so it'll have to do 😁I still expect it to be tough but hopefully not impossible like we've sometimes felt when sheeting our jib upwind. The deckhouse winches have also now gone up a lot - from 7 single speed to 42 two speed so this will hopefully make a big difference when using our reefing lines and hoisting the main halyard.

I bought the french made e wincher 2 electric winch handle in thailand for 2,500.00 its powerfull and now all 6 of my winches are electric and lifting the dingy in its davits is a piece of cake. The e wincher is a big expense in my opinion but its pretty damn good. Especially furling the jib in 30 knots. It just powers it in. I was considering a 3,000.00 electric 44 winch but so glad i went with the electric winch handle instead.
@SailingMillennialFalcon2 жыл бұрын
Cool, I've looked them up once and thought the price seemed high but as you said, you now have 8 electric winches rather than just one electric (for what would have been triple the cost of the electric winch handle). I was curious whether it was powerful enough but I guess you just answered that!

Are those Lewmar wavegrip series? Have a set of 48s as well and it’s true pain in the backside to find spares like those jaw plates (or however those are called in English) are out of stock worldwide and Lewmar doesn’t supply them anymore. Look at eBay if you need spares…
@SailingMillennialFalcon2 жыл бұрын
Yeah they're the Wavegrips. We encountered the same thing too on our 42's when the plastic top (that the bolts go into) cracked. We fiberglassed them up but it was difficult to find any replacements.

Those older version Lewmars are like what I have on my 85 Wauquiez. They work very well, but are much more of a pain in the a$$ to service than the newer versions. To fully disassemble to clean and regrease, you have to remove them from the boat which is not ideal. Awesome deal though and they’ll make a huge difference for you
@SailingMillennialFalcon2 жыл бұрын
Oh wow, I've only heard of Harken winches having to be reinstalled to service them. These winches we bought thankfully can be serviced by the usual methods and don't need to be reinstalled every time! They have 4 screws on the top and then the whole drum lifts off to service.
@stephencoulter92052 жыл бұрын
@@SailingMillennialFalcon the screws do let you remove the drum, which gives access to the bearings, but the older “Wavelength” type make you undo the screws to remove the gears from the bottom of the winch. Glad you got the newer ones

Your last video made me wonder, so I checked: Your Tayana 42 has a 497 sq ft foretriangle, and came with size 42 primaries. My J/42 has a 371 sq ft foretriangle and size 50 primaries. On the other hand, every corner of your Tayana has more (and better) timber, more glass, and far more hours of labor than my boat. Every boat is a series of tradeoffs.
@SailingMillennialFalcon2 жыл бұрын
Wow, 50's 😱 We couldn't even fit them on the side where our winches are! But I totally agree, every boat has its pro's and con's. No ideal boat out there!

The 497ft.sq is with a Yankee jib they have a Genoa which maybe closer to 600 ft.sq. the primaries on my V42 are Lewmar 44s and they are indeed undersized and I use a Yankee.

I think the keyword/idiomatic expression/locution I overheard was the word *_shopping._* If a guy ever doubts he hooked up with the right girl who - with her biggest smile on her beautiful face - willingly and happily flies to another country on a one-woman-mission to find [him] mechanical spares in a dirty warehouse, then that guy have absolutely no clue how wasted he is. Or if he has the slightest idea about the value of his find, then for C... sake, carry on paying that girl a trillion kisses and sweet coffee, every morning until eternity. If he does this correctly she'll hopefully do it again and again. And any kind of 'shopping' will be fun.
