I don't need the info you provided in the video since I don't have a boat. That being said, you both are such a bright and beaming light as you share with all of us out here. Your presence, facial expressions, smiles, laughter, lightheartedness and general positivity are so so needed and contagious. So thank you for all that. This video was the highlight of my evening, the best of the dozen I watched tonight.

Downside of two heads is double the amount of stuff to fix. The upside when one requires fixing you still have a head that is probably functional. Redundancy is good even if frustrating from time to time.

@15:30; Hey guys! Loving the Q&A. In regards to yes or no to a surveyor, I realise they are a significant cost outlay when boat shopping, but I would certainly use one on the prospective boat/s that were on the final shortlist, but I would find one who was willing to collaborate to be as certain as possible of finding EVERY issue. My history is an Australian commercial master with decades of experience and has sailed since I was a small child, because (Contrary to popular opinion;-) ) I do NOT know it all! (I don’t even know half of it...) Hope this provokes thought and discussion! Take care, stay safe and ‘Make lemonade!’

Love you guys! We have a center cockpit too and my husband and I was just discussing what we don't really love about our boat and the cockpit was on both of our lists. I always thought it would be more of a safety issue having it but not sure after listening to your response. We haven't done a whole lot of sailing so will see how we like it when we do leave to go cruising😜...On a side note: For us we bought a boat using everyone's opinions.. I feel like that was our biggest mistake. We do love our boat now so that is good news...Cheers...🥂

It is interesting that you bring up the hi-bread thought, that is one of the things that I am thinking about. I have been talking with people that have gone full electric, and even gone out on a couple of boats that are full electric. The more I look at it the more I am liking the idea. But range anxiety is a big issue. One of the companies that I have been talking with is helping me with the math to ensure that the genset would provide enough power to run the electric motor as well as charge the battery if needed.

Adam, you made two great choices... First, Khiara, and then the two of you picked the Millennial Falcon! Not having much blue water sailing experience, I think I'd be more comfortable in a center cockpit. In rough seas at night I'd feel more as though I was IN the boat, rather than ON it, if you know what I mean.

You bought your boat with the experience and knowledge that you had at the time, and it is hard to predict the future, it would be fabulous if a person could pick a boat, or anything for that matter, the first time, with thousands of hours experience, as a fist time buyer, we should then make no mistakes on our choice. Oh wait we would still want to change something (lol). Love following your journey, take care and stay safe.

Another fundamental question for you (which I cannot get anyone to touch): For extended cruising, would you seriously consider having a square topsail on a foremast in a modern (high-aspect sail(s) and keel) schooner arrangement? The idea being to improve windward performance but yet to run efficiently without difficult-to-handle spinnakers and whisker poles.

Nice video! I was wondering what your cow catcher was all about also. Electric drive will never out perform your diesel unless you have a 55hp electric motor, your whole boat completely full of lithium batteries with a 100hp diesel generator charging your batteries! Kinda like a locomotive, submarine, cruiseship..

So, electric motors actually deliver more tork than a diesel. Diesel trains are in fact run by electric motors (one on each wheel) and the diesel engine essentially charges the batteries. So in theory an electric motor of the same size would be more powerful. I know they make electric boat motors where they are equal to 80hp and above. You are right I think about weight being a factor but the advantage to electric is the weight can be balanced across the boat and it doesn't change with use.

Good stuff. The problem with going full-on electric is the need to get out of the way of a hurricane barreling down on you, or the need to get into an unfamiliar port someplace when it's getting dark and the wind's coming up and you're on a lee shore. The amount of energy stored in hydrocarbon is just staggering. In the real world, everything comes down to kilowatts. For its weight and size, you can't beat diesel for the kilowatts stored in it. And I say this as a person who had 500 watts of solar and 600 amps of storage on his last boat. Going full monte on electric is just too sketchy for me to take the plunge, at least until battery tech comes a little further along. And I'm totally with you on surveyors. They're fine for what they do, but they miss stuff. In the end you gotta know your boat and be able to more or less survey it yourself. Glad you all are well - it's been a while since I checked in with your vlog.

I have a 20ft Red Witch - do you want to see how far you get on that for your challenge?!? Only joking, but we bought it to learn all the basics around sailing, rigging and maintenance and when things break, it doesn't cost too much (quick trip to Bunnings for most things!). Hopefully, these experiences will provide us with a better idea when we come to buy a bigger boat in a few years time. Thanks for your Q&A as it definitely solidified some thinking for me. I have originally also been thinking CC was the way to go, but I'm starting to come round to the idea of an aft cockpit with two double cabins in the rear and a v-berth. I think it was your interview with John, that really changed my mind where he was talking about flailing around in the huge aft cabin when you're on passage... and now Khiara is also of the opinion that maybe taking up all that space with a cabin for sleeping is overkill. Pure electric is the way to go. Check out KZbin channel fullychargedshow to learn about all the developments in electric vehicle and battery technology. It won't be long before this will all be available for boats as well. Also Sailing Uma went electric and they made it across the Atlantic! (Couldn't resist the temptation to have a dig! :-) ) Great video again, keep them coming!

If you were in rough/windy conditions offshore (40-50 knots with the swell that usually accompanies that kind of wind), what would you rather be on: a higher performance boat (for example, a J-130), or a slower heavy displacement boat (like an Island Packet)? I think the opinions on this are really diverse depending on style, past experiences, etc. but curious what you think after talking with John Kretschmer and from your own experiences. My personal preference: performance, because I think the risk of waves over the stern and knockdown are lessened if you're keeping up with the conditions, and your ability to outrun or reach out of poor conditions is more valuable than being able to lock up and cross your fingers. I know plenty of others reasonably come to the opposite conclusion, so curious on your thoughts.

Surveys are important, buying a boat of any meaningful value without a survey is a mistake, and you won't be able to insure it without one. I'm sure you've learned by now that a good survey gives you a snapshot of the boat - it's definitely not strongly predictive. It means the most for the things that change the most slowly on a boat - the basic infrastructure of hull, deck, rig, sails, rudder and steering, paint & varnish, etc. Add an oil analysis and it's helpful for the engine and the engine installation. Beyond that things change too fast - all the "hotel systems" and etc; the survey will tell you the quality of the installs (though now you have the experience to see that yourself) and it may discover problems needing immediate attention that weren't obvious, but in no way does it or can it predict what tomorrow will look like. All these lesser systems break too fast and are too unpredictable....just the way it is. Your comments on an engine-centric boat may need some rethinking. Not that much room for solar on a mono, small wind turbines don't make that much energy. It's way more fuel-efficient to run refrigeration and watermaking belted right off the engine than it is to run the engine to charge the batteries to run those things. And most people use the engine a fair amount anyway when actually cruising. If your goal is zero engine time then, sure, engine belted systems are a problem, but then you need to invest in more wind & solar, and eventually you'll want the lithium ion batteries too to facilitate that DC lifestyle.....there's no free lunch.

Just a suggestion regarding an issue, that I see a lot of sailing channels make. There are hardly any video of sailing when things are rough. Much too often we hear "We had a terrible night/morning/afternoon" - and then we get the story, but never the video. I understand that it is difficult to film while you reef in a big gust and that filming is the last thing you think of in those situations. But I think that a small GoPro that is set on loop and mounted somewhere strategic with some sort of powersource, could solve that. Or some of those security cameras. The quality doesn't have to be the best. I think that it would improve the realistic impression of the videos and also teach a lot of people how things really are, when the SHTF. Sorry about the rant... :)

@19:15; Once again, I used to think precisely the same thing(s), But the ‘Sailing Uma’ electric repower has paradigm shifted my perceptions!

Doesn't Uma just have a range of 30 nm miles on electric? The issue is not the electric motor but rather the battery. Or how much energy per pound the batteries have. As inefficient diesel engines are, the energy to weight ratio of diesel far outstrips batteries.

Electric is not quite there for the average blue water boat. If you are Uma and have pride in sailing everywhere, you are the exception.

Uma is quite a bit lighter than MF, if they put the same system into MF they wouldn't get the same range, it would be dramatically less. Den and Kika have been very fortunate to never need to motor very far, that could be down to careful planning and good maintenance but a lot of good sailors find they need to motor for extended periods unexpectedly, Uma does not have that capability.

Humans have been sailing the oceans for ~7 thousand years and engines in sailing vessels have only been common for about 75. This "need" for an engine in a sailboat to motor for days on end is ridiculous. Don't be a lazy ass, be a sailor and sail your damned sailboat! :)

@@linusa2996 Right, to get a decent range on an electric engine, an important safety consideration, the batteries would sink the boat. People say that some people sailed without engines, right, but their destinations were limited, also sailing ships are wrecked in bays all over the world, through lack of an engine when the weather became bad.

Electric is so much better. Small powertrain, less breakable parts, no vibration, enough hp output and silent. If I were you, installing a reliable kit would be a major goal, although still expensive. Best winds for you!
