This channel is quite possibly the best sailing couple on KZbin. Because you two are: Unpretentious and raw Perfectly imperfect, down to earth, messy. Real people that we can all relate to, telling it as it is. Not relying on bikini shots, nudity or other cheap tactics for extra views You portray a very balanced view of (sailing) life. Not just the great scenery and sunsets, etc. Keep up the great work! This channel is one of the best, even if view count does not yet reflect it.

With the prop disconnecting once is unlucky, twice indicates something is amiss. For the nut to loosen(?) again in such a relatively short space of time means that either there is a serious vibration in the engine and/or prop or the nut/prop threads are not within spec. Don't tempt fate again and get it investigated and fixed.

I'm two years late to the party but this is what comes of having the Millennium Falcon as your namesake. For her it was the hyperdrive, for Millie it's the propshaft. I have to assume because this channel continues that you fixed her but I wish you safe passages regardless. Keep up your positivity. I'll be joining the cruising ranks this year and this channel is one of my inspirations.

In case you might be interested, the actual maneuver of ‘jibing’ to change tacks is called ‘wearing ship’. The old square riggers couldn’t tack through the wind because of all the sails and rigging, etc. so they would ‘wear ship’ falling off the wind and bringing it around onto the other tack. Quite a bit more complicated on those ships though. Keep having fun with the learning curve. 😉

I'm sure that your getting all kinds of advise on this but having owned the same boat as yours, I might be able to solve your dilemma. Reference. The illustration. In your manual. Take notice to the coupling assembly and you'll see a through bolt and a key. The through bolt passes Through the coupling housing and shaft, it holds the prop shaft from backing out of the coupling assembly. There should be a groove in the end of your shaft and nut to accept the key. To do the job properly, you'll need to split the coupler apart. The through bolt has always been a weak link in your boats shaft assembly and most likely if this has happened before, the bolt might have been replaced with a hardened pin, unless you see the hole in the coupler, the end of the pin may still be in the aft side of the coupling assembly and you'll have to drill/ knock it out. There should also be a hole through the prop shaft that the bolt passes through. If there's no hole in the shaft, that indicates that the prop shaft was shortened, most likely because it broke off were the bolt passed through the shaft, that's were mine broke. Instead of drilling through the shaft again, a sleeve with two set screws was added, they slid that over the shaft down to were the bearing is and tightened it down. That sleeve replaced the through bolt and keeps the shaft from backing out. Once the bolt is attached to the shaft, line the groove up with the keyway in the shaft and bolt then tap the key into place, the key is there to keep the shaft and bolt from spinning apart. If there's no hole in your shaft and no keyway either, I'm betting that the shaft was shortened. They might have neglected to machine a keyway and there might be a sleeve rolling around your bilge. Check this out and see if you find what I've described, if not considering that you probably bathed the end of the shaft with lock tight you might want to have a split sleeve made and hope the glue holds the bolt and shaft together. I wish you two the best. You have a beautiful boat and I love the videos. It brings back my best memories.

Maybe having the transmission in reverse while under sail is allowing the prop shaft to unscrew? With the transmission end basically locked so it doesn't spin the force on the prop slowly works the nut loose...maybe. A time lapse camera capture of the prop while sailing may provide some clues.

I started watching your channel from the beginning and really enjoy it. However, I quickly started to realize that one or both of you have a strong sailing history or life around boats. Obviously, your lifestyle decision was one that you already had some comfort levels with. It is good to see you showing the reality of boat life and the continual issues boaters have on blue water. Unless they spend huge amounts on new boats. LOL Excellent work both of you and it is a joy to watch your channel. Question, for the type of boat, I was wondering how tall you both were for cabin comfort?

I just copied the following from my last comments made the last time the shaft uncoupled and pasted them below you need to fix this before something really serious happens its great to be young and carefree, but the sea and boats can be very unforgiving this isnt about luck bad or good, your world is trying to teach you something, and you need to listen start msg: You could use LockTight, regardless you need to fix this it will happen again. personally I would drill at least two holes into the nut and wire it in place. * First I cant help thinking you should have either a double locknut or a locking washer; has that been lost? check the bilge. As to wiring a nut, you might have seen this sort of thing before, your anchor shackle should be wired in place, rigging screws should have been wired to prevent them coming undone but this is often by a split ring or sometimes a split pin. Another method is two nuts with a lock washer between them, the kind of wings to the washer bent over the flats of both nuts prevent them moving. Naturally you torque the first nut to spec, insert the washer and add the next nut binding tight as you can, then bend the tabs onto both nuts. Double locked nuts kzbin.info/www/bejne/hHOnfHevbrOCb8k locking washer, you wont need the inside keylock so get one without or file it off. You can even make one of these in a pinch hmb-guzzi.de/media/image/product/53639/sm/locking-washer-groove-nut-crankshaft-v11-gearbox.jpg

SV Zaya Safety-wiring the nut won’t help, safety wire only keeps the nut from causing more damage. Loctite and double-nuting would be the ticket, esp. red Loctite.

A note on weather forecasts: They usually only show the big picture and ignore localized wind patterns such as land-sea breeze, mountain-valley breeze, different effects due to the shape of a coast, ... Sometimes these effects add another 3bft to the wind. Just ask some old salt, they'll happily explain the local area, phenomena and how to predict them.

SV Zaya provided sound advice. But Locktite prewashed with acetone (Locktite comes in several grades, go for secured forever option), copper locking washer, suitably torqued nyloc nut (brand new) and to finish it off a centre punch to burr the thread and nut at 2 or 3 places around the circumference. Should do the trick. Further options include a split pin thru nut and or shaft. Someone mentioned a zinc anode immediately before the A bracket. Another cheap and cheerful way to restrict the shaft going backwards is a hose clamp or two before the stuffing box.
@johno6861

Not sure you mean the shaft came out of the coupling or the coupling came apart, either way sounds like you have a lot of drag. You might want to install a thrust bearing to take the strain off your transmission. You are lucky it didn’t jamb your rudder or leave all together and sink your boat. After your vid of down below you now know the meaning of ship shape. Have fun and be safe. I gave up on having an engine all together and had a sailboat.

LMAO! Oooops! Well Said, Lovely One! On the Prop shaft, there are TWO Kinds of Locknuts, the Ny-Lock style, and the Mechanical Style. The Ny-Locks can be Re-used at least until you strip them out, but the Mechanical ones only once or twice. The mechanical ones are all steel, like a Regular Nut, but one side is Rounded a bit, to make it possible to tell they are Locknuts. They are Strongest and Most Durable. They are either tapered inside, or maybe squished a little in a Press, so the last few threads are REALLY TIGHT, and they are as Hard to thread On as they are to Thread Off. After a couple of times removing and reinstalling, they loosen up and become Regular old Nuts. When you can, buy two sets of New Mechanical Locknuts, and put one set On, With Locktite. If they come off Again, reinstall with new RED Loctite, and put the Second set On as Jam-nuts. If THAT comes loose, get regular Grade Eight nuts and Tack-Weld them on.If necessary, you can then Grind the welds off with the Dremel to remove. Or simply twist the bolts in two. This prop shaft will NOT Defeat Us!

Guys, you probably know this but it’s best to sail around the coast at night, usually at around midnight. The wind comes off the land and if you’re close inshore defeats the prevailing trade winds. Check out the Thornless path to Passages South (or similar) by Bruce Van Sant.

I love watching the two of you, you really are able to share your joy in what you are doing. But I wonder about your prior sailing experience; did you have any prior to starting your journey? The long trips I have done were always with at least one person with way more experience, which provided an extra measure of comfort. Also, based on your experiences through Episode 17, at least, I now understand how you got such a wonderful price on your boat, since the other Tayana 42's seemed to be priced at almost double!

Don’t know if this has been recommended but you should consider putting a shaft zinc on shaft inside of boat back near stern tube so it doesn’t slide backwards too much if it should ever separate again from transmission.

I guess it's called lee helm, the opposite of weather helm. As you discovered, too much foresail area was the root cause, quite easy to picture, the pivot point of the boat is close to the mast, wind on the foresail pushes leeward, wind on the mainsail pushes windward. Plenty of sailboats function nicely under foresail alone. If it doesn't want to tack: reduce foresail area, build up speed before tacking (fall off a bit) and if need be "back the jib" to get the bow through the wind. Also check your mast rake, might be an issue as well (dunno the tayana).

Adam, awful that you almost lost your prop shaft again! Are you sure you aren't missing some required parts? According to the Tayana manual where they discuss commissioning/recommissioning, there is supposed to be a set screw with a s/s safety cable to hold the shaft in the transmission outlet. I remember when this happened the first time you said that your boat had not set screw feature. Could it be that simple? There should be a "dimple" or small hole in the shaft where a set screw would normally be held. You probably thought of this already....

I saw in one of your videos the engine water strainer stud had broken. You need to fix this ASAP, if the engine is pulling air into the filter due to the faulty strainer cap not only will you over heat but you will destroy the impeller in the raw water pump on the engine. Both Groco & Perko make repair kits for this. When making the repair you should also replace the gasket in the cap. Make sure you replace the gasket with a rubber one not Cork.

A small cheap fix is Teflon tape " thread tape " around the threads , one or three wraps should do the trick . All this does is make the O D of the shaft a few mm. bigger so the nut fits tighter . It is also a temporary solution but I have a few temporary solutions that have been working for a few years now. Also " Blue loctite " be advised Red loctite will not come off without a torch and lots of muscle . I keep Teflon tape , Duct tape , a spool of bailing wire and really strong glue on board all the time just for those Oh crap moments that seam to happen to me more than anyone else ;) I thought that there was a lock nut on that for sure at any rate a more permanent fix would be to double nut it if you can find a nut the right size and thread count . Clearly I stopped the video to comment so ... yeah fair winds and all that jazz ... be safe and have fun !

Really need to examine your reefing situation, in 33 knots with shortened sail that boat should be very comfortable. That is the problem with roller furling, really limits the sail selection. Your videos are fun to watch and will draw more views as time goes by, just wanted to note when you are doing comments together it seems at times your are looking at the camera viewing screen and not always at the lens(the viewers) it's not big deal, but the little things make a difference to the viewer. Also audio levels are something to be aware of, up & downs, people will accept poorer quality video, but bad audio is a killer for videos. So far this boat has provided story lines... things just keep happening .... Your videos work, I think in part because you are ++++ people. Hi guys - just discovered your channel - really enjoying it! Regarding the coupling nut - I am quite surprised it is coming loose as it is just holding the output flange onto the output shaft and should not be under any form of (rotational) loosening load - the engine torque is transmitted by the splines. Are the splines possibly worn on either the shaft or coupling? - i.e. is there any "play" in rotation of the flange on the splines? If something is worn, then the flange will vibrate / oscillate on the shaft and transmit this to the nut and loosen it. Also, is the shaft properly aligned between the engine and gland? - maybe there is excessive vibration due to misalignment? Or possibly a slight runout on the shaft itself causing vibration? Does the flange tighten up onto a shoulder on the shaft (can't see anything on the diagram)? If it is meant to tighten onto a shoulder, maybe there is a washer missing under the nut so the flange is not tightening firmly against the shoulder? Finally, I imagine that the nut is fairly large and the tightening torque would be pretty high - is that defined anywhere? If it is not torqued enough, there is insufficient clamping load on the nut and it could vibrate loose. If you have a big torque wrench use that or possibly add an extension to whatever spanner you are using..... There does not appear to be any obvious design locking features shown on the diagram i.e. "Nyloc" nut / castellated nut and spit pin / tab washer / LocTite / wire locking etc. Therefore the designers did not expect the nut to loosen and the root cause might be elsewhere. If there ARE locking features on the flange / nut but are missing for some reason, then you need to fit these as the nut will keep coming loose under these circumstances. Anyway, as an interim fix, a second lock nut if there is enough thread length and/or Loctite Red would seem to be the only solution. Maybe email the engine / transmission manufacturers for further advice if you have not already done so? [Just some thoughts from a mechanical engineer - my background is automotive, not marine though...]

Didn't you find loose motor mount bolts when you bought the boat??? Check for the right angle of the shaft also look for vibration

I was told you guys made it to Culebra, about 125 miles from where this video was recorded, so did you fix the prop shaft issue? I’m an aircraft mechanic and we safety wire almost every nut down, being a boat owner myself I know it not always possible, but anyways, Hope you’re enjoying Culebra! Safe sailing! Another great video!

Guys, when you are sailing with your engine off but the transmission is in reverse you are unscrewing the prop nut. You need a feathering prop. Until then put the transmission in forward to keep it from free wheeling. I'm just down the street from www.minneysyachtsurplus.com call them they have tons of used props etc.

Agreed. Weve stopped doing that and just let her spin. We snapped off the gear link with that foolishness. Lesson learnt 😁

Keep in mind that if you ever need to you can tie your dingy alongside and use it's motor. You won't be going very fast, but at least you won't be adrift. Dan and Kika have done this several times on Uma as they sort out their electric drive system. Check out their channel if you haven't: Sailing Uma

98% of blue water cruisers dump their sewage in the ocean. Actually, it's probably closer to 100%. Also, Uma has never dumped raw sewage anywhere. They're still in port, rebuilding their galley. They used a composting toilet prior to the new bathroom.

On a Hunter 37 had a bikini wrap itself around a prop shaft and break open a stuffing box seal. Does that count?

I think this is a motor allignment problem. Check your motor mounts carefully. You may have a broken mount or loose bolts. Get professional help to align the shaft and evaluate the mounts.

I'm not saying it wasn't safe, it's just perhaps not quite as safe as some of the other ones. Why? Well, some of them are built so that the back doesn't fall off at all.

Is there a way to drill the nut and put a cotter pin or wire through it and the shaft so it cannot back off? Similar, you could drill and tapthe side of the nut to receive a grub/set screw. Then just put a sligh detent in the shaft and set it.

That's probably harden steel and very hard to drill. I went thru around 30 carbide drill bits trying to do that, took all day.

Sitting here at my desk with your video in the background, (curse I want to go sailing!), oops, your vid just moved to the center screen...IMHO, I haven't seen a clear answer for your troublesome shaft nut. Contrary to some beliefs, nuts generally aren't secured on a stud by torque influenced binding on the threads or the mating surface. Rather, increased torque "stretches" the stud and binds against the nut, kinda what a split lock washer does. Bigger the stud, the more torque is required; hard to do on a stud that big with a wrench that small, and not intended for the splined shaft you probably have. For a critical application like that, aircraft/marine standards should apply. In this case, drill the shaft (if its not already), get a castellated nut and pin it (or in a bind, pin the nut you got, you know, love the one you're with!). You could safety wire it or get a nylon lock nut, but they're not as robust for that large (and critical!) of an application. Just do it, brother. One of these days your shaft will find its way past the rudder and the videos will stop coming and I'll have to watch someone else (they'll have to start out on the port screen, though). cheers!

Learning by experience is all good, but some things should be handled by a professional before a repair under an emergency by a less knowledgeable person is required. Remember the famous quote, “Better to use ones superior intellect, so as to not need to use ones superior skill”. Don’t go cheap on safety.......

Hmm, get a flexible coupler, Loctite everything, and fit a folding/sailing propeller so you don’t have hold it in reverse, thus lessening the strain on the drivetrain and giving you quite a bit less drag.
