Anchor chain - put it into a bucket, maybe and let it, say, soak in Oca-Ola, or spray a can of rust remover over it in there?

Hey Adam and Kiara. Great adventure. But one thing scared the crap out of me. Kiara, you put your hands on the anchor chain when it got fouled and you were trying to free it. When I was in grad school I spent my summers fishing commercially. The skipper had rules, of course. One was that you never touched the anchor chain when it was being deployed or retrieved. Never. Ever. He said it was the most dangerous thing on the boat. And this was on a commercial fishing boat. In 2019 on our way to Southeast Alaska on our trawler, I forgot the rule and ran my hand through the gypsy when we had an issue with the anchor. We were a full days run from the nearest small First Nation village with a very small hospital (named, ironically, the H.W. Large Hospital after the founding doctor). I got lucky. 22 stiches later the pieces were all put back together, and the nails ended up on the top and the fingerprints on the bottom. No lasting damage to nerves or tendons. But please, if you have an issue with the anchor, use a chain hook on a line, or just a line, but don't put your hand on the chain or the rode. I just don't want you to remember the rule in the manner I did. Enjoy Iceland. When is Alaska on your list?

We've had the "anchor chair scramble" twice. Once each with 35' sail and 38' power after rough weather with water over the bow. It seemed like it was two hands blind, or one hand and eyes on. I felt your pain.
@jpdj2715
@jpdj2715 Жыл бұрын
I feel your pain ;) 17m44s "The Following Day" and I thought, "oh wow, it's all still there, seemingly in the same place"; then at 17m55s I thought "polar bears?" meh You know, Iceland's West side is on the North American tectonic plate and the rest on the European side. These plates are drifting apart. As long as volcanos keep filling the openings where the tear happens, Iceland gets larger, or else it breaks in two halves. The "vik" in their place names is the same as in viking. In my native language we have a similar word. It basically means something like "hood" or hamlet or quarter and the "ing" in viking makes for "person from" so that means viking means "boy from the hood".

You should sail to Lundy island just off the coast of North Devon, UK in the Bristol Channel. Lundy is Norse for Puffin Island. And indeed there are Puffins there, you can even go to the telescope that is set up to view them. Or go to Shetland, there are loads of Puffins there, on Nos and the southern tip, Compass Point. You can sit on the ground and the Puffins hop past your into their dens.

You need sturdy and reliable for the bilge mounted autopilot while pretty is just a nice to have. Just remember the boat yard adage... "Putty and Paint Make it What it Ain't!" As long as its sealed up well and protected you can hold on pretty until you can source enough gel putty/fairing compound and paint to make it pretty. Look what being too concerned about pretty did to the Titanic... Oh My! Best!

Careful grinding inside your boat. Those sparks can set fiberglass on fire. You should be using some welding blankets to catch the sparks or at minimum wet things down. I've witnessed what sparks like you are making can do inside a boat.

As the autopilot is not in line with your baby bulkhead there will be some out of plane forces. therefor please ad a stiffener (ideally) perpendicular to the baby bulkhead (rearwards) or diagonal forward. Out of plane bending may kill your baby bulkhead.

Hey guys, well done shimmying up to Iceland. Been planning on a sail around the world since I was 21, and am now 4 years away, altho will be with wife and 3 kiddos. So I’ve watched quite a few sailing Vlogs. Have to say, I’ve enjoyed yours more than most. And John Kretscher has a sold a couple more books as result of yer interviews. So hit him up for a beer next time you bump into him in port. Here’s a thought. What about circumnavigating N & S America? When you get around to Seattle area, we’ll give you a nice welcome. Cheers! Motoring under load is really good for Diesel engines, and keeps them in very good condition internally, which is why I try to run them on passage Sails Furled for about an hour in the Morning, which tops the Batteries up before the sun comes up, provides hot water for showers, plus when I get one for my next boat a single plate induction hob for the galley to save cooking gas to do breakfast, and as the Sun goes down a repeat of that for evening meal plus a boost for the batteries, in whichever Batteries need a top up. If you like Puffins, you will like the Islands off the Pembrokeshire Coast in West Wales close to the entrance to Milford Haven. The County I'm stuck in waiting for my next Sailboat. 😅 Best Wishes and Fair Winds, and Requesting that you not get anywhere near Pyroclastic Flows please, as Volcanoes are very iffy apparently if they havent had any Virgins thrown into them recently ? Bob in Wales still. ❤👍⛵️✨️✨️✨️

I've heard that the cold water thing exercises your cardiovascular system. The cold makes all your capillaries constrict pushing all your blood internal to conserve body heat. It's as if they were muscles and you are "flexing" them. (I guess they actually are muscles, just not skeletal muscles.)

Hi you two!!! I don't know a lot of the language, but HV (from what I remember) has a sound a little bit like 'Qu' but more like a Kv (if you can imagine Qu is Kwuh and Kv is K-vuh but only one syllable). So Hvammsvik is sorta like 'Kvamms Veek'. There is a town a little farther west from Reykjavik (veek rather than vick!) called Hveragerði. I don't remember how/where I picked this up, but if I remember correctly, it's pronounced KVAIR-a-gair-thee (think of 'air' and then Kvair and gair etc): Kvair-a-gair-thee. Now, say it all together so it flows and let the last part drift off to almost a whisper. And that is your improper-totally-wrong-American-style Icelandic language class for the day :) Bless Bless - PUDDY!!!

I think they are so cute. So have you seen any polar bears yet! Plus I was wondering are there any Orcas there? I just love Orcas. My dream is to swim with them in the wild. I'm not to happy about the water temperatures that they like to swim in. That's why we have 5.5mm wet suits. OK thanks for sharing your visit. Not to many sain people go sailing to places like Ice Land. Okay I'll see you next week. Stay warm and stay safe.

Is this the second Volcano erupting in Iceland by any chance ? the amount of Magma moving hlobally does seem rather large, with even Yellowstone grumbling apparently? The Solar Magnetic Field is certainly throwing wibblers. Fall/ Autumn appears to have arrived 2 months earlynin the USA Pacific Northwest, and apart from it being bloody cold there already, Large Flights of Geese and Ducks have already been heading South for about the Past Week or so . Where are you heading , Maybe the Mediterranean wouldn't be such a bad idea if the Ukraine War doesn't Expand ? Cape Verde ?🤔 eta. Sorry to bring that up, but if this looks to be the entry into the Extended Grand Solar Minimum Cooling Period that NASA Warned was approaching a few years ago, plus after 4 successive years of La Nina's, we are also entering what is looking to potentially be a Super El Nino. How will they interact ? Dunno. Any Guidance from former such Coinciding Solar Cycles ? Well data is pretty thin on the Ground, but the most stable Global Conditions do appear to have been at latitudes close ish to the Equator ? But somewhere Nice and not earthquakey or Volcanoey, with ability to provision and refuel to sit while seeing how things shake out, and not in the Caribbean right now, as Termites are very much on the move, and they just love Plywood Restaurants. North end of Argentina ? fine Steaks, tins of Corned Beef and some bloody good Wines ? From there if needed, and with a Watermaker, a fine run up to Cape Verde - the old Welsh Traders route back from Chile and Peru, but can be becalmed for quite a while, so full diesel tanks plus Jugs of Diesel in case you need to motor out. That's just me though. Bob. ❤⛵️✨️✨️✨️
