I hope I never have to do that. It looks worse than you described. Good luck with the repair and my wife and are looking forward to the next episode! We always like to see the good with the bad.

I have a Klepper that has a cut in the hypalon hull. This is the best vid I have seen on patching with two part adhesive. Thanks - J
@caseyjones74044 жыл бұрын
You don't need to part adhesive, 3M 4200 would do the trick permanently

Hypalon and PVC have different specific adhesives and thinners. For example, Toulene for Hypalon, MEK for PVC. Also, if you do accidentally touch a small spot when trying to position the patch and cannot get it to release, a simple dip of the brush in the appropriate solvent, and work it against the stuck part, and it will come free to reposition.

Hypertex is different. work in the shade or early morning before any heat from the sun. Lint free cloth wipe patch area three times 5 minutes apart with Methyl Ethel Ketone M.E.K. First pass removes oxidized surface, second softens, third wipe with a new clean towel each time, prepares the surface. Next, mix 1/3 weaver with 1/3 hardener and 1/2 OZ (shot glass) of toluene, I mix with a bent coat hanger on a drill, about 5 inches long with a (L) bend. On really hot days I use more toluene. Use the brush three times to apply glue to all surfaces 5 minutes apart, (use egg timer) be exact, really thin. If the glue dries too fast after prep, wipe with MEK once and get the patch on within 3 minutes, work fast, be firm and I personally use a car tire repair roller. Do not use the boat for a week, do not air up over 1 psi, Caution the fumes inside the boat are extremely flammable, so I let the air out to 50% and pump in good are several times over the course of 4 days.day one do nothing. Never let the boat deflate all the way. I have a leak at my transom at the port side where the floor meets, will be cutting access opening to patch the transom leak, access point will be 12-14 inches forward of the port tub and the access will be at 10 to 11 o'clock, elbow size, help is required to keep the tube inflated- this technique is kinda like Arthroscopy surgery. interior patching is easy.

Nice job. I used Tear Aid to seal the inside of the tube. Then applied a bead of 3M marine sealant to the tear. It was a "T" shape rip and I needed to keep it from separating. I'm putting on another piece of Tear Aid on the outside and then a PVC patch with adhesive. Good detailed video.

Great repair video Thx , it’s happened to also. West marine sells a liquid sealant for all inflatables which I used as an added insurance After my repair. Thank God no leaks . Check it out , it’s expensive

Can you use the same method when patching a hole the size of a half dollar maybe a little smaller I’m having a hard time trying to patch mine I think the next approach is an inside patch but mine is a hole not a tear

Hi! I saw you used the Weaver Adhesive. How does it work so far? I want to use it to fix a 8" open seam on my Sea Eagle inflatable kayak. My kayak only requires 3.2 psi so I hope the adhesive on the PVC can hold that pressure. Any recommendations or ideas would be great.

I'm in UK, what a nice place you have to repair a dinghy, does this method work in sub zero temperatures with hale and wind? Ha ha, great repair, hope you had sun cream on?

This process is extremely lengthy. Does it really work? 2 pack glue usually dries hard. My “go to” vinyl glue is HH66.
@SailingSatori4 жыл бұрын
Don’t know anything about HH66, but this repair has lasted almost 3 years with no leaks. Rock solid.

I was watching the part on getting the air bubbles out, thinking that perhaps a fin roller for fiberglassing would be the ideal tool.
@SailingSatori6 жыл бұрын
Possibly, but it may require a lot of pressure. The metal 7-in-1 tool worked, but was a little harsh.

I would be very worried about leaks around the tube seam that the patch went over. I kept waiting for you to comment about that seam. Doesn't the seam create a small pocket for that air can escape from? It seems it would be hard to form the patch completely around the seam.
@SailingSatori6 жыл бұрын
I though of that when I was doing the repair, but there was just enough space between the tear and the seem to make a seal. Surprisingly, the patch laid quite nice over the seam... 6 months later, that is the tube that holds air the best.

Tolulene is the preferred solution on hypalon, on pvc mek is required tolulene isnt ideal, m.e.k will soften the surface of pvc allowing the glue to make a chemical bond where as tolulene will not..ta

But did you try slapping on some flex tape with the might of Zeus? (Also fun fact this was uploaded on my 25th birthday =P)
@MargoLouiso5 жыл бұрын
Do not use flex tape on inflatable boats! We tried it on our pvc inflatable kayak. It rippled and the glue oozed out to a sticky mess nightmare. Took a ton of "glue be gone" once we easily pulled off the tape, and weeks of rubbing. Then we patched it the correct way with marine products.
