In this short HOW TO VIDEO I sharing what I know about picking up a mooring on Catalina Island whether you have crew or if you are a solo sailor.
“Stoked” is a 1978 Catalina 30 sailboat that I got for $3500. See that story here: • EP 1 - How we got a $3...

That was the shortest, easiest, and most complete "How to" for moorings I have ever seen or read. Thank you!

Thanks Ben! I’m sure there are different mooring arrangements at other places but this is how to do it on Catalina. Cheers!

Stay calm and don't panic, that should be the motto of every captain. I really like sand line moorings, keeps the boat stable, secure and less worry about swinging into another boat.

That is certainly my motto as best I can contain myself. 😂

Thanks Andy, I try to watch everything you post, even if I don't comment. 50 years ago, as teenagers, we used to hang out (troll for girls whose parents brought them along to the Isthmus so they didn't stay home and get in trouble) at Cherry Cove, courtesy of the owners of "Lanakoa". Not sure how they put up with us. Great memories. I especially liked the San Clemente video. Never stopped there or got a close-up look at that island until now!

Solid and very well done! I have a couple of minor differences in my pickup: 1/ I run a separate dock line thru bow and stern hoops after I’m secured. Makes it easier to use the hawser pipe (which you do not have on Cat 30) and less abrasive than the mooring poly line on the hull. Also makes it easier to adjust lines if mooring lines are a little short. 2/ if there is a stern breeze I will sometimes release bow first. I always wait and verify stern line is clear before engaging prop.

Another thing I didn’t address in hind sight is the tide and potentially tying up too tight. Also I’m sure there are a lot of tips and variations to mooring in different places and on different boats like yours with the hawsers. 👍🏼

When you walk back to Stern, keep the line away from the boat if possible. It gets really slimy and will mark your decking

Not hahd, furl or drop your jib, sail upwind to the mooring buoy, luff your main, release the main sheet, saunter fowahd, pick up the buoy, haul in the mooring line and make it fast to the cleat. Wrap the light buoy line around the eye of the mooring line on the cleat to ensure it won’t slip off. Done!

I'm down here in the Florida Keys so there aren't no Hills to Shield the wind from you. Mooring a boat from the front and rear is almost guaranteed disaster. The wind can be one or two miles an hour for shooting the storm and when the storm front hits Witcher does quite often it'll rip off your Bimini and blow you up on a mudflat sand bar or into the trees. How secure are these Moorings?
@sailingsole
@sailingsole Жыл бұрын
These moorings are maintained and pretty secure but this video is ONLY FOR CATALINA ISLAND in California. I don’t want people to this this is for everywhere. I totally understand what you’re getting at for the Florida Keys. I’d love to sail around there one day. Cheers! 🤙🏼

@@sailingsole the waters are very shallow in the Florida Keys around all the island so you can't really go where you want to. Only good beaches are on the Ocean Side. And there's some fairly deep channels in a few harbors right now it's hot
