Arthur thank you for sharing your professional expertise with fans of Dan and Kika, Dan is a true engineer, Kika uses her fine feminine imagination. And they like to work together create things through working on their projects. The episodes showing their job and creation of projects are the best. Among other presentation I am impressed with the episode in which Kika bacame the captain of the battleship. Fantastic promotion of the naval forces and interesting video for Dan and Kika's fans.

Kika made me laugh the entire time she was doing the hull sanding and painting work out. Awesome job guys. A special shout out to the amazing editing job you have done on this and the previous two steps. It is next level. Well done. Thanks and cheers!

Kika the respirator works better when you skin contact to create a seal, your inhaling dust were you dust hood is under the respirator.
@PartoftheMadness
@PartoftheMadness 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, breaking that seal severely impairs the effectiveness of the respirator. More importantly, an angle grinder with a cutting wheel is a very dangerous weapon, you guys. It would be such a tragedy if something happened to you wonderful folks. Sunglasses don't cut it and never without the steel guard. Those wheels blow up all the time. Sorry guys, I hate to be safety dad but those cutting wheels can maim and blind very easily. Broken pieces of cutting wheel can even penetrate and lodge into a polycarbonate face shield. I work in heavy industry and we are trained to treat these things with great respect, I'd hate for more people to get hurt because they underestimate the danger. I totally respect the DIY ethic though, you guys have done some amazing work.

Yes I agree about the way you work in unison the way you do. The repair had to be done but the way you pile into it amazes me. It is all orderly and well prepared but that is quite a structural piece! Was it me or maybe the camera angle but that hull section looked bloody thin to me? I'd expect it to be about 5cm maybe more thick around the keel?

So, just for future repairs, it's good practice to prime any surface with unthickened epoxy before putting filler on, for best adhesion. It also makes it easier to feather out the edges also. Do you own a West Systems manual? Much good information as well as ideas.

Probably not a good idea laying on that many layers of fiberglass all in one go either. The heat generated can really screw things up. Isn't the maximum recommended like 1800 ply worth? Looked like they were using 600 so 3 layers? and they laid on 6?

Next time you are out of the tide maybe you should consider a boot line? It keeps the hull above the waterline looking good longer, as it masks the slime line, and is a good visual transition between the dark anti foul & the white topsides. The colour could be quite traditional like a red, Royal blue or turquoise or you could go a silver or somewhere in the brown/gold/kaki spectrum.

I had the same thought for the propeller but if you install a camera, you still do it after the glassing is done by drilling a small hole. A viewport would have to be glassed in but not a tiny little camera.

This was a fun episode. Amazing how much work it is holding a sander overhead for 6 hours. Nice work digging out all the de-lamination. Is your keel encased or bolt on? If it's bolt on and you see anymore cracks. Drop the keel and check the bolts. I do fit tests for respirators. Half-face respirators are negative pressure, they will not seal on a beard or on cloth. Thus defeating the purpose. Try a banana oil test some time, it will show you how much gets through. You 2 always do things the best way you can. Hope this helps you to keep doing so. For the respirator you were using the pre-filter is very important in stopping particulates. They are usually N95 or P100. Hard to find right now. Stay safe.

Captain Kika is a pint sized Incredible Hulk seemingly dancing her way through the movie "Fame"! Captain Dan, I have the utmost respect for your skills as a mariner and a boat restorer but I've noticed during projects over the last year or so you seem to be developing a case of "plumbers crack". I enjoy watching both of you and everything UMA. Stay safe and if you have a few spare minutes please share with your followers how COVID-19 is impacting you, we are concerned!

I feel for you Kika, I'm sanding my 33-foot boat for 2 weeks now (osmose) and still maybe 2 more weeks to sand. Getting every layer down up to the fibreglass, I cry every evening he, he.

Total respect to boat owners who can make a giant hole, or 2, and then rebuild the hull!

A little crazy you crossed the Atlantic with those cracks. 😬 Glad it held together.

Good Grief! And to realize now that you crossed the Atlantic, unaware of the weakness of your hull! I am so impressed with how you "do everything", but this belated discovery must have make your heart skip a beat.

Wow, you did exactly what I was hoping and ended up with a smooth transition, less damage because heaven forbid you get onto something you slip right up and back down. Nice.

not sure if this is of interest - but where your sail drive comes out through the hull - (we are similar) we have made a couple of sheers of glass up to a provide a fair hull - we take it over every second slipping to clean out the void
