I can only say from my own experience, it's the fights which really keep a relationship going, because if you dont have anything to fight about, you just sink into boredom and before you realise, the relationship is only about "we got used to living beside each other"...

The history of the place is mind boggling. Originally a Roman fort then a Norman keep then a royal residence and finally a POW prison. Funny how a video blog from a pair of sailors opens the door to a rabbit hole of exploration and discovery. Thanks guys.

I definitely can identify with your needing out about the castle. You will have much to nerd out about in the coming years, provided we can overcome COVID-19, which is just a few months off from where you are now. I’ve been on my office chair & couch since March 12th, 2020 and wishing I could be on a 45’ sailing catamaran with friends & family. Does not matter if it is the Caribbean, Atlantic, the Mediterranean, Indian or Pacific Oceans. I will like where ever the winds and tides take me.

Portchester Castle is a medieval castle built within a former Roman fort located at the northern end of Portsmouth Harbour. The Roman fort was established in the 3rd Century AD and its walls were still standing when the Normans invaded in 1066. The Normans built the large square keep and St Mary's Church within the Roman Walls around 1130 AD. If you sail over to Dover you can see the Roman Lighthouse, beside a Saxon Church, near the Norman Keep within fortifications that were used right through till WW2.

Did you know those spiral staircases always turn in that direction so that right-handed defenders could use their sword to defend while using the middle of the staircase as cover? Right-handed attackers also had a more difficult time striking at their enemies that way.

When I was in Europe I was impressed as you by the age of everything. Buildings that have been remodeled since the 1600's or earlier. Graveyards were also fascinating with the earliest date, that I could read, was in the 1100's. It also made me very happy and grateful to be living in this period and in this nation. Most people in the 1100's or 1600's had no rights, no constitution, nothing. They couldn’t read, write, school was for nobility and the top 1% of the wealthy. Every where I traveled, I wondered how much blood of all the poor people was soaked into the ground. A bit morose, but if the buildings could only talk we would know all the sordid details. Thank you for another excellent video adventure . . .

The drone view brought it all into perspective. Dan when you look at that chunk fallen away & tell us you see remodels and additions and different rocks used, it would only take a moment to point & give a quick explanation. We're looking at what you're looking at but not seeing what you're seeing. Don't be afraid to dig deeper into the nerdy stuff - if you omit what everyone complains about there won't be a show. Something for everyone is enriching for many. Loved the toy shop scene Kika! With great footwear you'd have jumped out of the dinghy I'm sure, for the squishy squoshy sticky gooey fun of it ! I love castles since I was a young boy. It is so cool to see this beautiful work that is over 1000 years old. I could see the excitement on your face at this location and the anticipation of so many beautiful architectural treasures that are every where in Europe. A decade ago I had the good fortune to visit the Cologne cathedral in Germany while on a business trip in the Netherlands. It totally blew me away at its immense size, grandeur, and beauty. I hope some day to see much more of Europe. Until then enjoy the beauty that you have before you and I look forward to seeing more of your adventures as you step through Europe!
