Seeing rain water catch on the roof of the cabin is a great idea for Uma. Perhaps you could acquire an 8x10 tarp, a hose bib, and a hose and catch rain water to fill your tanks. Perhaps even add in a gravity fed water filtration just in case. Something you could roll up and put away when not in use.

Dan, Good job on your engineering constructs! And videography is improving since the beginning! I was late finding your channel and still have a long way to go to get current. I wanted to mention something about sailing techniques. Everyone does it their own way, but there are good reasons some things are done differently by others. You do seem to sail with the rail in the water when the winds are a little stronger. Heeling the boat that much is dangerous and puts unnecessary strain on the mast shrouds AND the keel attachment points, and leaves the boat and crew susceptible to a knock down from an unexpected gust of wind. Ease out on the sheets and let the boat get more upright. Perhaps there is a greater feeling of speed when heeled over that much but you are also spilling out more air out the top of the sail and losing lift on the sail. That's why you should chart these parameters. When the conditions are steady take heel angle readings vs boat speed through the water and chart them at different angles of heel. Letting the sheets out some will get the mast more vertical and it will fill with more wind, and you may find that boat speed is NOT being sacrificed when doing this and your wear and tear on your boat is reduced. I try never to let the boat heel more than 20º.

Visit Yellowstone. Magical park. Though I got sick of the sulfur smell at all the geysers. Do it late in the season. Late September, early October. Most tourists are gone. The park is beginning to shutting down. It is the favorite season for wildlife photography. Beware, you could get lens envy.
You should let Dan do more episodes on his own. The hurricane ones were excellent.

I agree with this comment, not because I don't enjoy the excellent energy and fun Kika brings to this channel, but mainly because as a nerd who loves detail, I absolutely loved the detail that Dan(aka King of the Nerds, in my mind) went into on that hurricane episode. 8:38 great scene!! your editing skills and ability to capture the places you are through a lens is clearly and rapidly improving! pro lvl imo 14:58 why not keep music light in background, dropping out was jarring (headphones) 24km uphill with supplies through mud, water, prob slippery stones (ankle roll nightmare!!) and risking getting caught up in a landslide...that was a bigger accomplishment than ya'll let on!! +100 respect!

So I've just starting watching your videos from day one and, like many yachties early on, had serious misgivings about your keel structure issues. Obviously all this time on it's come to naught but was still wondering whether the keel article you said you'd be writing in your 2015 Q&A vid ever materialized as I'm extremely keen to read up on the advice you got and so on.
@SailingUma7 жыл бұрын
No, never got around to writing anything about it. So far it's held up very well. We've even bumped it a few times with no issue. We did use the wrong epoxy to fair the joint and that has cracked again (front day 1) so next time we haul out, we'll have to redo the cosmetics. Other that that, is been totally fine.

Great video! It's so good to see people wearing hiking shoes to go on a hike. Too many idiots are running around the world in flip-flops. You defined your limitations, prepared for contingencies, and experienced a moment of life as so few are privileged to be able to, while recording it. Accomplishment, is the word so well fitted to your experience. One note of concern; Pause for a second on every sign you pass to let anyone who is viewing read what is written there. This will save you some narration, and give a greater depth of the area to anyone who wants to know about the place where you are. Oh, TWO things; Never, ever go anywhere without a roll of duct tape! (for the glasses, this time). Just added that from Paul Ohlseins' comment.
@mindymakesit6 жыл бұрын
hi guys, just wanted to offer up a friendly tip :) I wear glasses and can't see without them lol...Sooo I always carry a little eyeglass kit in my pack, the essential items you add to that kit are some copper wire (in your case maybe stainless) make sure its thin enough that it won't break but will fit a few times through the holes where those tiny ass screws go and a tiny pair of pliers (mine are jewelry pliers about 3" long) to cut/twist the wire. I have majorly fixed my glasses on several occasions, both the lens falling out and the arms falling/breaking off. This way you don't have to worry about those darn screws/screwdriver, until you can get somewhere where you can make sure you won't lose them. I also carry a one shot of super glue for extreme fixes. Another temporary hack, let's say you are hiking and lose the arm off a cliff...lol...the wire can be put into the hole and you can wrap it around to the other side to hold them on your head...ok one more...you drop your glasses and the frame is wasted...all you have left are the lens...the wire can be wrapped around the lens, to form a makeshift pair of glasses :) Happy day to you both.

Have you though about getting hiking poles? They are not that expensive and require little space and could do wonders for your knees on such hikes. When you come to think of it if it takes you e.g. 4000 steps for 2h hike and you have 1kg backpack that means that in that 2 hours your knees lifted 4 tons. And if you are using hiking poles they redistribute like 40% of weight from your knees to your hands and shoulders. They can really prevent problems with sore knees and knee joints.
@roberttorres8097 жыл бұрын
Hey guys, Robert here and just thought I'd give you guys bit of a tidbit; kind of like a note to self sort of thing; so with out further a do here goes nothing; self the next time you cross a ford or a stream for that matter, take off your boots, tie the laces together, sling them over your shoulder and cross the stream. This method will afford you guys dry boots on the other side and for extra measures, the next time you guys go hiking you might want to take along with you a small rag or an old shirt so as to dry your feet and then place them back in your dry boots on thee other side...
@johnlampe32587 жыл бұрын
Extra, dry socks.
@SailingUma7 жыл бұрын
Ha! Yes, that's a great tip....IF there are only a few streams to cross. But that trail was pretty much hiking up a river. We were lucky to find a dry rock from time to time to step on. It also rained pretty much the entire first day. We were soaked to the bone by the time we made it to the cabin. Luckily everything in our bags was still dry wrapped up in trash bags.
@RonKris7 жыл бұрын
Well, it's like when you first start hiking long trails that take weeks or months, you start with the idea you will get some of those 'dry socks', Gortex boots and all the rest, then after you done it a few times you start to realize getting your feet wet is just part of the adventure. Now I hike in trail runners, carry several pairs of socks, dry them and my feet when I can and ignore wet feet when possible...oh, always keep dry socks for sleeping, thin or thick depending on weather.

A trick I learnt in the military is to pack my clothing in the largest Ziploc bag I could buy, and then place them in a heavy duty garbage bag inside my rucksack.. Currently I'm travelling across Canada and pack a set of a t-shirt, socks and underwear in one bag. Keeps them dry, clean and fresh! Ziplocs are great for organizing everything in a ruck or wetbag.

Hi guys. Back in Fairhaven, do you remember exactly which marina you used, and what you did to get them to let you live aboard on the hard? I'm in the market for a boat right now, and doing it on a shoestring, so I see myself doing basically what you did, living aboard on the hard while making repairs, and I'm hard pressed to find a marina that will let do that around Southern New England. I'd appreciate any comments you guys might have on that.
@SailingUma7 жыл бұрын
The boat was already in Fairhaven Shipyard when we bought her. We lived in the boat for the first month, because at first we were planning on getting her ready to sail south. But the shipyard was closing for the winter (November to May) and were shutting off their water, laundry, electricity etc... That's when we put her on a truck and moved to Florida.
@cometjockeydave40417 жыл бұрын
Sailing Uma Thank you for getting back to me so quickly. Most marina's in Southern New England shut down by November, and kick everyone out, and I've been hard pressed to find any at all that let you live aboard on the hard even during the summer. Maybe they let out get away with it because they think you two are awesome, everyone else's seems to. Lol! Maybe I'll see you on the water at some point. Fair winds.

Too bad the name of the volcano isn't mentioned in the video (yes it's written in the description, but not everyone reads it). It's like you're climbing a generic mountain, whereas La Soufrière is one the three most important volcanoes in the Caribbean islands, with Martinique's Montagne Pelée and Montserrat's Soufrière Hills. I simply think it's nice from time to time to get some valuable information, giving added value to your everyday vlog. Anyway, godspeed !

My point is, there is almost nothing said about Guadeloupe and the volcano in the video, and the description doesn't help much.
