Kika's vid effects actually made me continue to watch the sponsored bit (to see what she would do) and kept me from skipping to the point in the vid where the spot ends...FRIKIN GENIUS...

Kika, even I watched the sponsor bit and I'm allergic to ads even to the extent that I renamed our TV remote control henceforth to be known as The Strangler ! So, you deserve an award for that !🤩🤣 The storm was incredible and I can only say that thank Neptune 😊 🙏 or whoever else knows about such things that you were safely tied to the wharf because that would have meant being hove to under bare poles and probably involving the drogue to top things off! All that has gone before plus a closer relationship with God I would suggest !

That's Iceland for you! I love that place, but you have to have some balls to sail there! When I drove the Ring Road, I can't tell you how many weather systems I experienced just driving! From blinding rain, to heavy snow in the highlands, to extreme winds, to sunshine. I wanted to go whale watching and on the very day I reached the marina to go, the place was closed because the winds were too high. I waited two days for the wind to break, but it didn't and I couldn't go. Those Iceland winds are something. I love seeing you guys there. I love that place so much!

Having been in that situation, putting an anchor straight out abeam really helps. If you get a chance lead the anchor from the bow out to somewhere off midships then acacia a line from the stern to the road making a bridle of sorts. Pull up on both ends to keep the good ship Uma off the dock. Putting a buoy on the anchor signals where it is . Fair winds

Dampen the rolling by adding weight to the windward side. A whisker pole with a bag of wet sails or thick blankets or.... may lessen the movement, just remember to protect the deck area under the pole and to also red flag the end of the pole. Five gallon buckets of water or sand could help too.

With the noise from the motor, given they are pretty small, if you were to insulate with noise baffles / design to incorporate would that be possible solution? With newer batteries now, is it possible to install battery banks that give you greater range? What happened with the vertical wind generator, is that project ditched? What are the practicalities of life like on the boat, showering etc.. Can't believe you guys have lived in such small space for so long. I've had dream of living on a boat but never put it to the test, your videos are inspirational! Thinking of downsizing, buying smaller place near a yacht club and seeing if we can get a couple of rides and see how we handle the motion sickness.

The 1973 Heimaey eruption and the attempt to stem the flow of lava toward the harbor were chronicled by the great John McPhee in a New Yorker article titled “Cooling the Lava” which was later collected in his book “The Control of Nature” (Farrar, Strauss & Giroux 1989) Like all McPhee’s work, it’s quite a read.

When the whitecaps are being blown completely off of the waves in harbour :) ... that must have been some wild blow out on the sea.
@gneisenau892 жыл бұрын
There is a great piece of nonfiction writing about that eruption called 'Cooling the Lava' by John McPhee, who was a writer for the New Yorker and a professor emeritus at Princeton. They poured water onto the lava flow to slow it down, and even had to walk out onto the still molten lava (after cooling a crust of several inches' depth) to deliver the water where it was needed. That solidified crust, while strong enough to support the weight of the emergency workers, was still very hot. The workers had to march in place while operating the hoses so that their boots wouldn't melt or catch on fire. And all the while people had to be aware of the lava bombs being ejected from the volcano which were landing all around. Without that effort the lava may well have closed the mouth of the harbor and rendered the island uninhabitable.

Last year in July (South African winter) I got pinned against a concrete fishing wharf with tractor tyre fenders at low tide in Mossel bay in a 5 hour 60+ knot westerly squall from 12: 30 am until 5:30 am, we were 3 aboard my chined steel Van De Stadt 34' en route from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth, all 3 of us on deck in horizontal spindrift with roving fenders, my stbd. cap shroud was inches from the concrete wharf, about 10 feet above deck level, one or two bent stanchions but no structural damage, I can relate, it's no fun and I'd love to have had those big inflatable fenders that you have, I'd rather have been at sea, Hove to with a triple reeded main and storm staysail, it was a shitty night at best in a lee wharf situation, thankfully I have an incredibly strongly built high latitude capable steel boat, ironically by 7 am we had the Karver top down furling G2 poled out with full main wing on wing in 12 knots true at 130°. The ocean is a place without rules or considerations. Fair winds

When in calmer water give me your thoughts please, you are the closest to dyneema experts to me ;-) happy landings Hugo
@SailingUma2 жыл бұрын
No need. Sure, double would be "better". But then why not triple? The rig is designed to "stretch" a little and flex. Making something TOO rigid can be a real problem. I'd say in general keep the boat as it was designed and just keep up regular checks and maintenance.
