Excellent stuff. Pushing yourself outside your comfort zone to enhance a life-saving skill is highly desirable. Many other sailing channels seem to skip over this either because they don't do it at all or because they don't think it's interesting. And full marks to Dan for not interfering - tempting when you're more knowledgable or physically stronger. You have confidence in her abilities and adaptability. Great team!

I agree with this comment especially Dan. It shows how much he honestly trust Kika’s ability and never said nor interfered with attitude of “See, I told you so”. Dan is truly a great man. He must have great parents and brought up really well connected with all the people around him and he definitely developed true self confidence within himself in the most wonderful way anyone could ask for. Positive Kika and wise Dan. What a wonderful couple ❤️❤️❤️👍👍👍🥰🥰🥰✊✊✊💕💕💕 Fair winds!

Well done Captain Kika. I think it is so important for couples to be able to cover their partner's jobs. You never know what might happen to make it necessary to manage alone. (This is not just sailing couples, but all couples). So now Kika, you know that if the situation dictates that you have to sail a passage alone, YOU CAN DO IT. Great job.

Good Job, when tacking, as soon as the head sail starts flapping you can release the sheet (the sail is no longer providing power) so that when the sail blows over to the new side you are already sheeting in. Great job Kika!! Another good thing to practice is to lock down the wheel and practice steering the boat with the sails, port, starboard, and maintaining a straight coarse.
@CedarMcKay7 жыл бұрын
Supervisor ColonyGreens I agree with you, but many feel that backing the sail gets you around quicker. I wouldn’t, but it is a well-established strategy

Kika, this video was super interesting and inspiring to me. The fact that you sailed the vessel on your own was pretty amazing. Not alot of women can do what you did with just the little bit of knowledge they may have. My boyfriend and I have a 5 year plan to start our sailing life. Some say it's never the right time, some say you have to plan..who knows.. I'd love to pick your brain and understand how you came about sailing.. pros and cons, basically all of the knowledge you have... pretty cool chick you are....
@popsikopper3087 жыл бұрын
Congratulation Kika. The feelingof accomplishment is well earned. As to sailing without a working autopilot, it often helps if you can balance the sails and just fix the rudder in place. That's usually good enough to get something from below or go to the toilet. For calm passages, it's easier to set the alarm to 20 or 25 minutes instead of 15. Those few extra minutes really help.
@stellarpod7 жыл бұрын
EXCELLENT job! You are not *just* another pretty face. You can pull your own, and then some. As always, thanks so much for sharing. Steve

Props and all that for the sail, but could anybody who has watched previous UMA vids EVER have thought of Kika as "just another pretty face"? Clever and skillful from the start. I seem to recall Dan mentioning in an early episode that this is what attracted him to Kika in the first place. At any rate... this Step was cool but not the seminal step to realize THAT.

Awesome done teaching on solo time Dan! The wave in a mid hatch to get Dan was a sinister plot of revenge - muhahahahaa. When you are so exhausted and dopey like that around minute 14 or so it is a good idea to use safety lines out of the cockpit even if the seas are becalmed. You just don't have your wits, quick reaction, or good decision making until you can shake off the fog of sleep. Love the video - great you had Dan on board as backup. You were awesome on your first solo sail! Great job! Cheers.

We had a day 'banyan' on a beach of Bequi in 1986 when our ship HMS Arrow, anchored off on our return from the Falklands. Way to go! Absolutely everyone should do this. That you did so with a temperamental autopilot and sailed the entire passage should be especially satisfying. The lazy sailor will turn on the engine, engage the pilot, and head directly to the waypoint. Before they know it, they're steaming to each destination regardless the wind strength or direction, justifying their action with the excuse that batteries must be charged or water must be made... Eventually, they complain that they're getting too old to sail, and the next boat will be a trawler.
