THE WORLDS BUSIEST SHIPPING LANE, AT NIGHT! - SwT 104 - BACK IN PANAMA AFTER 2 YEARS OF WAITING

Sailing with Thomas

Күн бұрын

Sailing solo into the Worlds second busiest shipping lane at night, after a 1300 nautical miles nonstop solo sail from Martinique to Panama. After 2 years of waiting, I'm back in Shelter Bay Marina again. I'm sharing the last hours of my sail and also some of the things around entering busy shipping lanes and communication with the traffic control. Even though I normally don't anchor at night I felt confident enough to do so outside of Shelter Bay as I have been there so many times and know the place pretty well.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR WATCHING AND SUBSCRIBING!

ABOUT THIS CHANNEL:
I`m sailing around the world in my Bavaria 55 Cruiser, making videos whenever I have time for it. Most of the time I sail singlehanded but occasionally I do have sailing friends onboard. Still in the Caribbean due to Covid and was supposed to be in Asia by now.
Even though this is season 4 on youtube I did not make that many videos in the beginning. Before full-time sailing, I have sailed several seasons in the Med prior to this, and obviously also in Scandinavia. I have been traveling the world before and have also been an active regatta sailor for decades. I had my first sailboat at age 7 and have been sailing ever since. Also, more than 10 years of experience as a captain in Search and Rescue at sea in Norway.
PLEASE BE KIND IN THE COMMENTS!
I'm just a normal person sharing my travel adventure through my eyes and experience from my perspective! Remember how I do things might work for me but not for you. It might even not be the correct way to do things, and I don't have the blueprint either. I'm not perfect and nobody is. The day I believe I know it all and don't think I can learn new things I should go ashore. I enjoy sharing my mistakes as well my knowledge and experience without trying to teach you anything.

As I have watched a few of your presentations lately there is something I notice throughout: a consistently careful, safety-conscious approach to sailing. It makes me want to learn from you, because I want to be a competent, safe and careful sailor, too. Please keep sharing your adventures, and especially your experience. There's a lot to learn from you!

Depending on where you are in the world, go and sign on for some decent approved training such as the RYA program that operates in UK and Europe. This is always very safety first approach. Thomas was a Rescue boat captain for years so he has seen all the mistakes others make and is a properly trained and experienced captain.

Thank you so much for your kind words and for being here! I’m happy to hear you enjoyed the episodes you have been watching, and your kind words are much appreciated. I try not to do click baiting and instead hoping those who bother to watch my videos find it more interesting than expected. Not always I feel that I succeed but trying hard to give some value for my viewers in one way or another. I definitely don’t have the blueprint in sailing and navigation etc. But decades of sailing and also professional side with lots of experience at sea is hopefully shining through it how and what I do. However I’m just a human and also do my mistakes and are not afraid to expose this side either as I go. My intentions is to share things in a transparent and honest way as real as possible. So feedback like yours is much appreciated and gives me also motivation to keep investing time and money into my videos. Thank you so much! Cheers 🍻

Wow that lava cake looks tasty! Maybe one day you will publish a recipe book with all your favorite meals, desserts and snacks you like to make while on board Be Free! :) I bet it would be a real money maker too! lol :) I imagine trading recipes is something sailors do every now and then when they get together to share a meal with each other. That Sailrite sewing machine must be worth its weight in gold to a sailor. Amazing how many skill sets you have to acquire when you cruise full time around the world on a yacht! How much do they sell for if you had to buy it brand new?
@SailingwithThomas
@SailingwithThomas 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for taking your time to not only watch my video but also leaving such a nice comment. Much appreciated! I have quite a lot of videos never published from preparing and making different dishes onboard. Maybe one entire episode with recipes could be something one day there is not so much other things going on. Or even a book for long distance sailing tips and tricks from the galley. This sewing machine is 1500US$ new plus all the equipment threads and much more. But you don’t need much canvas repairs or stitching your sails after a sail to have defended your money spent. Been wanting one onboard for a long time, but timing it with shipping etc is a challenge as sailor and especially last two years. So it was a no brainer when my friend listed this for sale. Thank you so much for being here! All the best and cheers 🍻

@@SailingwithThomas Investing in the right tools is definitely worth it. :) I actually imagined it would cost more just for the machine but it sounds like you got yourself a great deal with the machine and all the supplies and stuff that came with it! :)

The rain we had earlier this was insane nothing on record like it. From Queensland to past the south coast of Sydney that’s over 1000km my mother has a house on the Richmond river north coast of NSW the highest flood before reached the bottom step on the ground floor this flood was halfway through the second floor nothing a record like it. Thanks for the reply I can’t wait to see “Be Free” flying again I also love how you give sailing advice it’s been years since I’ve sailed you have given me the bug to get out and sail again.

The cleanliness of your boat should be a badge of pride for you. It is picture-perfect. 👍 It is sad when humans build in the wild and then kill animals in their homes. I wish there were a way to better coexist.

Thank you so much for watching and your kind words! I like to have it nice and clean as it’s faster to discover things. I could not agreed more with you we should be more careful with our wild life. It was the navy here and not the marina killing the crocks, as they where afraid of goo in the water at their base in front of the marina. Thank you for being here! Cheers 🍻

@@SailingwithThomas Thanks for sharing that. I feel better about the marina. And, it sounds like the Navy has a legitimate reason for their action. I guess it would be hard to relocate them.

@@SailingwithThomas I just watched a Gold Globe video that covered keeping hulls free of barnacles etc Thomas. There was a new technique , new to me at least , that uses silica film sheet . The hull needs to be flattened right down before applying the silica , but nought can stick to the silica when you relaunch . A bit like Teflon , but not nasty to the environment apparently . Nice clean hull means a faster hull speed .... Tell uncle Rick that next time he feels like he is falling he must not use his hands to save himself . As a rugby player , many years ago now , I learnt to roll so that my shoulder took the first impact . This saved me in many motorbike slow speed accidents due to ice and diesel . No hospital visits , maybe a bruise . Just saying ! And slow down . Lol. Stay well and happy sailing to you .
