I love the DETAIL in your review. Other reviewers kind of gloss over the pen like an overview, but you actually explain in detail how the pen feels and compares to others. Outstanding. (My black & red 1911 EF should arrive tomorrow!)

Many good tips about understanding how nibs write, given different paper. Excellent video for several reasons. Glad I found you!

How does the Sailor 1911S size compare to a Pelikan M400? Is the uncapped length comparable?

I also love Sailors, have a few, some older models, all have fantastic nibs. I have a 1911 with a 21K nib that is soft, even thought it is marked, H-M. Have an older 1911 with a 14K H-B nib that is also softer. Most H-F & H-MF are fairly stiff but smooth. All have great flow. Buying direct from Japan is best value. Look at www.engeika.com/, prices mostly better than any eBay auction & you can get some unique nibs.

Just got mine online. It writes butter smooth out of box. I am disappointed however that Sailor does not include a converter. It must be a dealer thing to include them.

Do you know how this compares (in writing feel/stiffness) to the 3776 century? I got a custom 74 with a fine-medium nib and I find it way to springy/bouncy for technical work (math, etc). That springiness is fine for journal or longer writing, but for class notes, faster writing etc I like the stiff nibbed 3776. I do find the 3776 too short uncapped and back heavy capped, so I was looking into this as an alternative. Any thoughts?

ns Sorry, I don't own a 3776 to compare to. I think if I remember correctly from what I've read, Pilots have the softest nibs while Sailors have the firmest nibs so I think the Platinum nibs would be somewhere in between. My custom 74 is is really soft as well, while the Sailor definitely writes like a full fledged nail. The standard M size is a smaller pen though. I think the 3776 is closer in size to a custom 74? The 1911m is basically the same length as a Pelikan M200 so if you want a longer pen you would probably have to go with the larger size 1911.

Thanks for the reply! How is the balance on the sailor 1911m when posted? I think my issue with the 3776 was that it became back heavy with because there is a metal nut and bolt holding the slip and seal cap in place, but because it all the way at the end it acts as a weighted lever arm really pulling the pen back.

ns It's not bad actually. It's definitely a pen you want to post because of the length. Generally I don't like to post pens because I prefer more neutral balanced pens, not really back heavy ones. I think the main thing is that it posts pretty deep so it doesn't increase the overall length too much, making the pen too back heavy.

Line variation is useless for a fountain pen meant to be put to work. That's for the calligraphers and those who want to play around with the pen. I hate line variation personally in my pens - so I typically go for firm nibs with as round of a tip as possible - I want it to mimic a gel pen or rollerball - not a stub nib.

You did everything but wrote with that pen. It is not a figurine. Pen is for writing. Firstly you must show its performance.

I don't do writing samples for pen videos anymore. I know everyone loves that format and all the figure 8s and line variation and crap, but what does that tell you about the writing performance as a viewer? The pen isn't in your hands, and what you consider smooth or feedback will vary from what I believe. I understand a pen is for writing, that's why I write with every single one of my pens and have no issues carrying them around and using them versus treating them as a holy grail. I got tired of everyone saying that pens write perfectly butter smooth only to hear obvious scratching being picked up by the microphone. So I'd rather describe how a pen writes based on what I feel over what you can visually see. And quite frankly because I adjust and tune practically every nib I own, the writing experience will definitely be nothing like what you'll get from a pen from the manufacturer since I like my pens to write a certain way. This pen happened to be the exception though, which I made sure to note in the video.

This is a great point. Writing samples are a LITTLE helpful but they're often the least interesting part of a review for me because you REALLY can't tell. I'd rather hear a reviewers description of the writing experience, specifically comparing to other pens. I just can't get that from a writing sample. Thanks for your review!
