Sailor Moon Pink Tint. Explained

Internet users have noticed that Sailor Moon in modern versions has a pink tint to it. In this video, I try to explain why the digitized version of Sailor Moon is different from the version that was released on TV in the 1990s.

There aren't theories: it's explicitelly written out that it's film degradation in their copies.

hard to believe that a well-preserved 90s tv series would age that fast, i believe it's more indicative of poor 00s-era video mastering practices, Terminator 2 & other various 90s movies have similar pink tint issues in earlier HD masters

The problem though is the pink isn't consistent it will go from a pink tint to a green tint from scene to scene and the green tinted scenes just look bad.

Calling out that thumbnail 1992 - Original TV broadcast 2002 - Japanese DVDs where the pink tint was introduced and kept in later releases since (2009 Japanese DVD box sets which used the same discs, 2017 Japanese Blu-ray sets which upscaled the same DVD masters) Later seasons like SuperS & Sailor Stars has a green tint and those came from their Japanese DVDs as well.

is film root over the years . Any shows were made on animated cel has this issue .Dragon ball , Z and GT has the same issue in the Japanese DVD when they released in the early - mid 2000s . Pinkish skin tone , low shadows color , greenish sky . And reddish GI . But still better than any Funimation modern 2019 set . But if you own the original US DVD release in the 90s . You actually have the correct colors . Also Totally not mark also had a short video about it .

I prefer the 90s because I was born in 1992 back when you had TVs that you just had to slap to make them work and there wasn't a lot of shows on TV

Not only the production should calibrate their monitors, but also the consumers as well. It's too bad that TVs and Monitors don't come perfect out of the box.

Same thing happened to fairly oddparents. Look up old episodes to see pink tinted characters.

Toei already cleared this up. It was actually a mistake, they didn't color correct after they digitized it. I think we all love SM nevertheless 🥰

It's not just pink, there is some blue in there as well. This can easily be fixed digitally. They were just lazy and didn't do it because Toei are a bunch of penny pinchers. It's totally their fault. Of course without the pink tint. It isn't aesthetic, it's just lazy.

So dragon ball fans send Toei the broadcast audio . Since Toei got rid of the master audio when dragon ball was finished . They turn it down . saying people would start pirate the show .

Also remember that Toei used vidicon tube (!!!) based film scanning as late as the late 90s and early 2000s!

Cel anime showed the legit colors when looking at the archived cels. The medium further proved that cel anime will always be better than digital anime as the later can easily be lost.

Different colors in anime in general is a combination of film fading, different film scanning tech (Toei used video tube based film scanning as late as when Dragon Ball GT first aired, instead of CCD or CMOS sensor based scanning) or even white balance or gamma and black level adjustments (Moomin didn't have proper black level and gamma adjustments when it aired in Finland).

I know this is a huge controversy in the fandom, but am I wrong for just wanting an option for having the DIC theme play at the beginning of every episode? As a 10 year old boy I was not into anything remotely girly, but that intro was such a banger that I followed that show religiously and was thoroughly upset when Nephlite and Tuxedo mask died.

its definitely a reaction to the degradation of the paint! certain colors like blues are less affected. check out the beatles. they FINALLY got a scan of the film and its pink all over! its just degradation. id love to restore the beatles cartoon since our best quality rips are uh… terrible…

So this pink tone is slowly becoming greenish. It needs to be corrected. Sailor Moon was never pink

i wish pokémon fans were like toei-watchers the western master of the 5th movie has a heavy blue tint, so the whole movie looks awfully like evening - no one cares

The pink tint differed between episodes and is NOT fixable by adjusting your TV settings.

funny thing is Sailormoon original design is pink ... Yes, her hair when usaki (Light Yellow) transform to Sailormoon is White Pink .. that is why nodoby in the show knew Sailormoon is usaki.(Check the original manga on the first vol, pinup .. you will see the original that not properly remove.)
