Very nice review of the Sailor Realo. It is a beautiful pen; I just wish I liked the Sailor nibs, but in my case, I prefer the "numbness" and smoothness of ST Dupont pens without any substantial feedback.

Thank you! I tend to prefer that as well, but in the hard-broad this one reminds me of how a Pilot FM feels. Which is just about my sweet spot for feedback

Great review of an excellent pen. Thanks. FWIW - Agreeing about posting this. This is one of only three pens I use posted. The others being the Sailor Pro Gear Imperial and the Aurora Optima. All three seem so much better balanced when posted. The nib is rather good and then some. Again thanks - I like the careful way you review. 👍

I’m somewhat perplexed by the relative lack of Japanese piston fills on the market, especially compared to European pens. I own one of the very few Japanese piston fillers-a Pilot Custom Heritage 92-but even that doesn’t hold any more ink than a Con-70 converter in a Custom 74, and its piston assembly threading is held in with glue. I recently purchased a Sailor Pro Gear, and I don’t personally mind it being a cartridge/converter feed model, since it’s easier to maintain. I do think the Realo is a worthy contribution to the very small pool of Japanese piston fillers, nevertheless.

I wish there were more piston and vacuum fillers from the Japanese brands, I suspect they may not be as popular in the Asian market due to the tendency towards thinner nib - whereby not needing a large ink capacity. I really love my Pilot CH 92, and you can disassemble it fairly easily. I made a separate review of that model here. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpyXeWysj6x_ic0

The construction is definitely too complex, if they simplified it they could start charging less for it. I think the piston knob is that small to prevent it from being turned when posted, I agree that it looks weird. Overall I see why this model isn't more popular.
@ForTheLoveOfPens4 ай бұрын
I wish they used fewer pieces as well. The Lamy 2000 is still my benchmark for piston designs. Doesn’t require tools and has a few simple spacers to ensure everything is assembled correctly… I think the rounded finial version looks a bit more symmetrical, but likely the cost is a driving factor as well.

Nice video, I love the in depth look of this pen, how it operates, disassembly & reassembly, and instructions on giving it a good cleaning. I've watched this video a couple times. I really like piston filling pens and Sailor nibs. I have 2 Pro Gear Slims and don't really reach for them, I think it's because they seem small in the hand. After watching this video the first time I actually added a Sailor Realo to my Fountain Pen Wish List. About a week ago I was looking on a well known auction site and came across a preloved Bungubox X Sailor Realo Cinderella's Slipper Fountain pen for a very good price and I bought it. Details of the Bungubox X Sailor Realo Cinderella's Slipper Fountain pen: It was made by Bungubox X Sailor to commemorate the 2022 Tokyo International Pen Show. It's a beautiful pen with sections made of a light blue-green resin with silver glitter. The barrel is made with a clear resin with silver glitter. The finial design has Cinderella’s castle in raden, and is surrounded by clear resin with silver glitter. I am hoping to receive it within the next week. Thank you again for the informative video and I look forward to seeing more...

Thank you so much! I almost got it together right (there was an o-ring loose in the barrel that should have slid onto the back of the nib collar). I've fixed it since filming, and luckily it didn't leak on me.

Thank you for the review, i just wondering whether the line width of Sailor’s B nib is similiar or smaller than western B nib ?
@ForTheLoveOfPens4 ай бұрын
I find its width pretty similar to western brands. Typically you’ll see Japanese nibs thinner when it comes to fines and extra fines. Mediums + are pretty comparable to western brands.

Thank you for the review and demonstration of how the pen can be disassembled. For me maintenance of the pen is a big feature as to whether I will buy a pen or not. I did not realize the nib and feed can be removed for cleaning. I have a King of Pen and haven't been able to remove the nib and feed. I love Sailor nibs. I like the feedback a lot. I only wish they would make a Soft nib. I think they are missing the market in that regard. I am guessing the pen holds more ink than the Sailor cartridge / converter. I would jump at getting this pen if it were not for the price.
@ForTheLoveOfPens4 ай бұрын
Thank you! I don’t recall seeing soft nibs from Sailor, but that would be nice! The capacity is about twice a converter, or about the same as a prefilled cartridge.

I have only owned one Sailor fountain pen. I ordered it with a Broad nib (because I wanted a western Medium), but it came with the finest Extra Fine that I have ever seen. Worse still, it didn't work at all. I tried everything I could to get the ink flowing, but it would never write with either the proprietary converter or cartridge. After about a month, I chucked it in a drawer, and I have never touched it since. It is funny how one bad experience can put you off a brand forever. Your pen here, in contrast, performs beautifully.
@ForTheLoveOfPens4 ай бұрын
@@AdrianLee-i7g This is my 3rd Sailor model, and I honestly wasn't a big fan of the other 2. I figured this would be my last effort toward the Brand, and luckily I really love this model. I prefer their broad nibs because Sailor tends have a have a significant amount of feedback, which can be overwhelming on thinner lines. Do you recall which model you bought?
@sathishrao79264 ай бұрын
Hadn’t heard of a piston filler by Sailor.. Saw the price out of curiosity- it’s 500 USD here in India 😞 I’m one of those who feels that ink window spoils the looks of ‘executive’ pens like this one.

The MSRP is really high for this pen, but luckily in the US it can be found for around $200.

The rounded-end Realo is sold as a 1911 (or Profit) Realo, and the flat-end one is sold as a Pro Gear Realo, in case people are looking for either version specifically.
