Years ago, my brother was in the Navy and we thought he was not going to be home for Christmas (he was finishing Basic Training at Great Lakes). I was even prepared to buy him a plane ticket but he told me he couldn't get leave. I was devastated. Then, one day before Christmas, I walked in the door after work and there he was. He had been planning on surprising us all along. One of my favorite memories.

Years back I was stationed in Europe in the Navy and I managed to get a week's holiday leave. I wanted to surprise my family, so I didn't tell them I was coming. When I got there, nobody was home -- they had gone on vacation. Spent the remaining days I had alone in the house, then caught my flight back. It was sad.
