You know, I'm starting to see that now. When I first heard it I thought He did something really bad, He broke the chain of command, I know about that since I was in the Military. Captain Crozier executed his command and discharged his duties to his crew in keeping with the highest traditions of the Naval Service. He sought assistance in an unfolding medical crisis without precedent. While a Nimitz class carrier and its embarked carrier air wing are instruments of national policy, the crew’s health & safety should be the first priority when not engaged in combat operations. There were no such dismissals of command upon leadership failing in Afghanistan. Captain Crozier’s dismissal is an indication of the failures at the highest levels of the Pentagon & elected officials to correctly orient and act accordingly to new, emergent threats. Fair winds & following seas, Captain…your leadership will sorely be missed.

Just came back to rewatch his embarkation after watching a podcast he was on. Apparently he had been repeatedly asking as well as suggesting ways to help his crew (ex. hotels were almost completely empty in the area to isolate his sailors in) and was repeatedly ignored each time. He did what he had to do for those who entrusted their lives to him when those above him would do nothing. It was the only option he had left and one he knew could end his career. Stand up dude 1000%. I’m glad he landed on his feet.

There is a time when a leader needs to make a decision that will not play well for themselves but is the right thing to do. My assumption is that the captain knew the likely consequences. It very likely that he had informed chain of command. He balanced his career against the lives of his crew. Brave decision. Only time and investigations will tell if it was the right one. An ‘Acting’ Secretary is unable to exercise any judgement since an ‘acting’ anything is not qualified by Congress and is squarely under the power of this demented regime. Loyalty of the service personnel is sworn to the constitution however every field officer knows that loyalty in reality is to the individual service personnel to his or her immediate officer or NCO. This may signal the start of service personnel questioning their own loyalty to the Commander in Chief. The Russian Revolution happened when soldiers refused the order to fire on citizens.

Great points! "It [sic] very likely that he had informed chain of command." Most likely, the very same "back channel" not used according to (A)SECNAV Modley. A letter sent up and out a non-secure server got the attention desired, but the additional punitive outcome may have been over the top. I had some recollection that the TR was in the Pacific at the time of "there's no epidemic" and everyone was best-served by ignoring it, but the TR caught the news anyway. There were no test kits at that point, just after the fact Observation and Diagnoses (and, of course, Presidential denial pounded at the Cabinet and news cameras) impacting Chains-of-Command. In My not so subtle Opinion, Crozier was cashiered, possibly as a sacrifice to the Elected and Appointed, higher up the food chain. We're gonna have to fire Crozier, or Orangeman will get BAD PRESS, and we don't want that! Then we can wait a week and fire Modley, who messed this up, royally. So, the Acting SecNav Modley was forced to write a letter of apology to the TR which had received his address to them about why Crozier was Fired - and BOY that got some BAD PRESS. The next day, Modley was given his walking papers, but no reinstatement of Command for Crozier. It's instructive to note that the Carrier Ronald Reagan was the other carrier designated for the western Pacific. It lagged behind TR in COVID cases and increased positives by a week or so. That Captain instituted an aggressive program of detection, isolation, disinfection, and relocation of ship's personnel to land sites much like the ill-fated TR Captain. And, the Captain of the RR stayed out of the news!

I agree its unfortunate but it did not act anything but compassionatly to the captain. The military as a whole (command and otherwise) respects the captains decision. He essentially threw himself on a grenade for the crew.He could have been put in a guantanimo situation. He understood this, they understand this.Everyone knew protocol had to be followed. Its black and white no grey areas in the military. This is the single most destructive piece of equiptment in the military capable of killing in a virety of ways including nuclear. If he wouldnt have done what he did someone above him would have had to do the same thing. His clearance is among the highest on the vessel so his information on correspondance is unique on the vessel so most crewmen wouldnt know the status or projections communicated by senior officers in remote command locations. This means either he go out the chain of command himself or order someone else to which would be dishonorable. Its a delema and although his risk officially includes death a dishonorable discharge was the very least of the outcomes so it ammounts to a hug and a high 5 in military unspoken language.

God bless you Captain. All the changing stories from the Navy's top brass make me think that they needed a scapegoat for the sailor's DYING on his ship and he wouldn't keep quiet about it. If a man can't stand for something, he will fall for anything. Captain Crozier stood up for his men and for me he needs a promotion. Im guessing he raised the alarm by the book and his superiors were slow to act so he took matters into his own hands, knowing full well what the consequences would be. He hasn't been relieved of duty because of any security breach or for not raising the alarm with using proper procedures. He is gone for insubordination. He can hold his head high. God bless you Captain.
