I've never been to sea, but at work I feel the need to sing chantys, as it's tough, thankless, and all but payless. Thank you, Johns, for entertaining me on my nights off.

Well, there's Stan Rogers singing Nigel Russell's "White Collar Holler"... Strictly, it's a field holler, not a shanty, but I think it still fits the bill

Lyrics boys: This dirty town has been my home since last time I was sailing But I'll not stay another day; I'd sooner be out whaling. Chorus: Oh Lord above; send down a dove, With beak as sharp as razors To cut the throat of them there blokes Who sells bad beer to sailors. Paid off me score and them ashore, me money soon was flying With Judy Lee upon my knee in my ear a lying, Chorus: With my new-found friends, my money spent just as fast as winking But when I make to clean the slate, the landlord says, "Keep Drinking". Chorus: With me money gone and clothes in pawn and Judy set for leaving Six months of pay gone in three days, but Judy isn't grieving. Chorus: When the crimp comes round, I'll take his pound and his hand I'll be shaking Tomorrow morn sail for the Horn just as dawn is breaking. Chorus: So for one last trip from port I'll ship but next time back I'm swearing I'll settle down in my hometown and go no more seafaring. Chorus:

Hey, Thanks! You've saved me quite a lot of listening and typing! I've listened through once and made a few edits as I heard them. (I know they're nitpicky, I've just been doing this on my own vocal group's album liners, so I'm in a proofreading state of mind. Anyone else who sees errors in this copy is welcome to correct some more.) This dirty town has been my home since last I *was_ a-* sailing But I'll not stay another day; I'd sooner be *a-whaling*. Chorus: Oh (or Ho!) Lord above; send down a dove, With *wings* as sharp as razors To cut the *throats* of them their blokes *What* sells bad beer to sailors. Paid off me score and *then* ashore, me money soon was flying With Judy Lee upon my knee *and in my ear she's* lying, Chorus: With my new-found friends, my money *spends* just as fast as winking But when I make to *clear* the slates, the landlord says, "Keep Drinking". Chorus: With me *pay all gone me* clothes in pawn and Judy set on leaving Six months of pay gone in three days, but Judy isn't grieving. Chorus: When the crimp comes round, I'll take his pound and his hand I'll be shaking Tomorrow morn sail for the Horn just as dawn is breaking. Chorus: *For one last trip from port I'll ship but next time *round* I'm swearing I'll settle down in my hometown *no more I'll go* seafaring. Chorus twice: AMEN. Kristoffer the Balladeer

The correct word is WINGS not BEAK (the Johns sing the right version). Tom Lewis admits he recorded the wrong word, although he HAD written the correct words of the Sailors Prayer; he had been in such excitement at having written verses to go with it that he wanted to get it recorded so that he could get a copy off to his friend Cyril Tawney. Cyril politely pointed out that, in the prayer, the word was Wings, Tom said he knew, so Cyril asked him why he had got Beak instead - Tom hadn't realised he'd done it!! He was mortified and has been trying to put things right ever since!!

Naturally low voice + Adequate practice = Ability to project low notes If I'm properly warmed up, I can belt out a B1 with a fairly operatic sound, though not quite as loud. I would recommend joining r/singing if you're looking for some general guidance to improve yourself.
