the last season was rushed and delayed, they had a new animation studio, handling it, so they didn't have time to coordinate proper transformation of them till midway through the end of the series. The original transformation, was dull, from previous senshi transformation.

Apparently it was explained by the creator that only females can be sailor soldiers, so in order for these three dudes to transform into sailors they had to undergo gender transformation as well. Thank goodness Mamoru isn't a sailor, that would have been a bit weird. I don't think it was explained in the actually series so this information was from an interview with the creator. I think a lot of people wanted answers.

I'm not sure how accurate this is but I read somewhere that in the manga they were actually female but it was only in the anime for what ever reason, they were guys that transform into girls.

@@TalaIsDarker I actually like the idea of them being female and posing as males. It would be easier to mask their voices, body bind etc. As for them being males turning into females, that does pose a difficulty as to how that would be done. How weird would it have been to have the Staights actually be guys but with different outfits? That I think would have worked too. In fact I had read along time ago the Outer Senshi were gonna be guys which I thought would have been awesome seeing as they would have been protectors of the inner Senshi and possibly their loved ones. But that was either false info or a joke. It would have been nice either way to have more male characters here cause Mamoru just doesnt cut it for me. At least in other male dominated shows there are female characters that are just as powerful and popular as the male ones. Ah well...
