The most important of Finland's canals is the 43 km long Saimaa canal, which connects Saimaa to the Gulf of Finland. Almost half of the Saimaa canal is located in an area leased from Russia. The channel's eight locks are controlled from the Mälkä and Brusnitchnoe remote control centers.
