Saint Coltrane: The Church Built On 'A Love Supreme' | JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA

"I have seen God - I have seen ungodly - none can be greater - none can compare to God."
John Coltrane composed these words in December 1964, as part of a poem he called 'A Love Supreme.' He included the poem in the inside gatefold of an album by the same name, released the following year. That same year, a young couple in San Francisco heard Coltrane in concert, sharing a jolt of higher purpose when he seemed to fix them in his sights with the bell of his saxophone.
That couple, Franzo and Marina King, went on to establish a church devoted to Coltrane and his spiritual message, incorporating 'A Love Supreme' as their chief liturgical text. Their house of worship - known today as the St. John Will-I-Am Coltrane African Orthodox Church - has survived decades of change in a gentrifying city, while making a few notable revisions to its charter.
In this 20-minute documentary short, Jazz Night in America pays a visit to the Coltrane Church, thoughtfully tracing its winding history - including a tumultuous period when Alice Coltrane, John's widow, bestowed and then revoked her support. We'll delve into the spiritual mysteries of 'A Love Supreme,' from "Acknowledgment" to "Psalm," and consider what it means to be of service - to a calling, to a community, and to the music that sparked it all. - NATE CHINEN

I went to a funeral service there for a friend's daughter a couple of years ago. It was a very moving service with the music bringing us into a fellowship and a start to our healing. The church has long offered a place of spiritual healing for the community, especially for those that don't feel comfortable in traditional churches and religions. I am also a big fan of Coltrane's music, but I wanted folks for to know that this church is a real place of healing and support for many and not some sort of eccentric tribute to a jazz legend .

Indeed, I would visit all through the 90’s - their outreach to former gang members, the unhoused, and their soup kitchen AFTER the service where all were welcome to commune were deep, impactful experiences for me 20 something self.

When I was 21 years old I was starting on the conservatory (M.I.T.)in Amsterdam. My major was jazz guitar. I had heard some Coltrane but it didn’t resonate deeply with me at that time. To earn some money, me and a friend signed up to guard and live in a ‘high risk’ building for two weeks. We had no idea what that entailed, but we could do with some extra cash and adventure. The building was an old school, situated on the brink of Rotterdam’s poorest suburbs. Turned out the school was located near a garage run by ex- convicts. And all this time we wondered why there would be a cue of cars past midnight in this dead end street. We found a bunch of syringes and needles in our building and that is when we started to realize this endeavour our actually wás high risk. We had to stay there and only leave the building for groceries or very urgent matters and report to the man every early morning. The whole area seemed so grim. People in the streets looked unhappy. Abandoned buildings with windows barricaded. On the horizon was a huge industrial area near the harbour of Rotterdam. We could see the flames coming from the chimneys of the oil refinement factories, reflecting in our windows. And the junkies cueing up in their cars was our view. Life seemed so harsh. An old lady, whom I barely knew had given me a cassette tape. Check this out, she said. When I sat alone in this room looking out the window, hearing John Coltrane’s Chim Chim Cheree for the first time, I was born again. I couldn’t believe how he spoke directly to my soul, finally showing me how deep love can be. How I needn’t doubt people have souls. How much energy his music (elevated by Elvin, McCoy and Jimmy) brought to my life. Later on I had the same experience with the Love Supreme album. The part in track 3, ‘Pursuance’ where Coltrane takes over after the piano solo is such an explosion of life energy that I can’t listen to it without crying. Time after time. Trane has changed my life.

Coltrane was careful to say that while he was raised Christian, his searchings had led him to realize that all religions had a piece of the truth. Only once did Coltrane perform the entire "Love Supreme" suite live, and there are no recorded interviews in which he talks about the album's personal significance. In September 1982, Coltrane was officially canonized as a saint by the AOC. [NPR] 6:19

On Divisadero Street and in nearby neighborhoods there were numerous jazz clubs, and we were blessed with the best & greatest artists coming through. Glad to see this bit of history is being shared! Thanks for sharing. I love John Coltrane's music for both its artistic and spiritual value. Building a church to effectively "worship" him , however, isn't an idea I'm down with. I'm sure that most who are familiar with ancient spiritual teachings are aware that they teach that all of us have the divine spark and there's no need to go outside one's own being to experience it. Revering and learning from ancestors for their achievements is fine; to worship them in a religious sense just seems to negate one's own spirituality, and individuality.

We need not go that far; it's true Coltrane isn't really a saint, in any case the days of saints have long passed. Neither is Maradona a saint of course. Would rather not comment on your final remark. But there really is something about Coltrane's music that strikes a spiritual note with people. And while the man lived a somewhat normal life, he had a wife, kids, went on tours, made money, loved to eat nice food (all this in the final years of his life dubbed the most spiritual by people), had more earthly possessions than most saints, etc. etc., he deserves respect, though perhaps not as a saint. This church as we can see was made in a very interesting period in San Francisco that is late 60s. The couple went way way too far by likening John Coltrane to God, but at the time this kind of went along with the general craziness of San Francisco. I would bet they were taking some hallucinogens at the time perhaps this enhanced further their experience of Coltrane. I think they are also a bit gullible: having met Alice, they almost became Hinduists. It seems they kept their actions to their local area and didn't care about having Coltrane officially recognized as a saint (which he isn't), moreover their church has been recognized by the African Orthodox Church which sounds like a real governing body but is in fact a schismatic church within USA, not recognized by say Ethiopian or Coptic Orthodox Churches I believe.
