Saint Bonaventure (1221 - 1274)
Bonaventure's holiness and erudition raised him to the highest honors of the church, And from childhood he was a companion of the Saints. However, in his heart, he was never more than a poor Franciscan Friar, practicing and teaching humility and modification. Saint Francis was the one who baptized him with his name, because, having miraculously cured him of a deadly disease, he exclaimed in a Prophetic way about the child “oh, buona ventura!” -Which means good luck, he is also known as “Seraphic Doctor”, due to the ardor of divine love that exudes from his writings.
He was a friend of Saint Thomas Aquinas, who one day asked him where he got his great knowledge from. Saint Bonaventure responded by pointing to his crucifix. On another occasion, Saint Thomas found him in Ecstasy while writing the biography of Saint Francis, and exclaimed, moving away from the cell: “let us let a saint write about other Saints”. Both received together the toga of Doctor Saint Bonaventure was guest and Counselor of Saint Louis, and spiritual director of Saint Isabella, sister of the King. At 35 years of age he was elected general of his order, and could only escape one more honor, the archbishopric of York, by dint of tears and supplications.
Gregory X elected him Cardinal Bishop of Albano. When the saint learned of the Pope's decision to make him a Cardinal, he discreetly fled Italy. However, Gregory sent him a delegation to return to Rome at a point on the way, stopped to rest at a convent of his order near Florence, and there two papal announcements sent to meet him with the cardinal's cap, found him washing the dishes . the saint asked them to hang the cap on a bush nearby and go for a walk in the Garden, until he finished what he was doing. Then, taking on his cap without disguising his grief, he joined the announcements and paid him the respect due to his rank.
