As a Japanese, first I discovered these kind of songs was when my classmate (who was an American exchange student) asked me if I was familiar with the commercials on these videos. Funny enough, I asked who was the artist singing and he said it was a guy mashing up old songs and beats. I got curious and we went down to a rabbit hole of artists doing the same kind of music like this. Its really amazing. I enjoyed this kind of music genre now and it’s really cool to see them utilize older Japanese commercials to visualize the kind of music they created.

These vaporwave songs are resemblances of the 1980-90s eras where people were enjoying carefree life without worries, particularly it was the time where everyone got access to goods and exotic technology from Japan. At that time, some people in the US were worried that the Japanese would take over the world by buying out American corporations (proto-economic globalization), but it all ended when the Japanese stock market crashed in the early 1990s. Fast forward to the late 1990s, people still had this carefree feeling but it also ended when the planes hit the twin towers. 9/11 did not just end the feeling we once had, but it also ended the future of a utopian electric interconnected world. Now watching these videos, it's kinda nostalgic for me because I grew up seeing these sorts of blurry commercials with reverb sounds. it's like a future-past.

It’s so bizarre yet it makes so much sense, that an artist from Brooklyn can make a song, then a guy completely unknown can make a video of old Japanese commercials and combine the two to make piece of art. With an aesthetic that we all can enjoy an atmosphere that makes us feel good. All deriving from promising commercials and good jams sampled from an 80s track called pillow talking. So simple it all really is but that’s where it gets complex. Absolutely amazing I’ll always come back to this something like this. It is An Art

A lot of Saint Pepsi's music ( and a lot of other vaporwave/future funk tracks) combined with the videos always give off a carefree and slightly nostalgic vibe. It's just people having fun. Listening to these songs make you want to live in a permanently dark city with the mesmerising flash of neon packing the scenery. They make you think about romance and business, giant skyscrapers, summer beach resorts, and video games, movies, TV and books and arcades and they make you think about being free and not having a care in the world. Overall, Saint Pepsi has made a significant contribution to the vaporwave genre by staying true to their own artistic vision and creating music that is both innovative and exciting. The track "Chinese Dance" by Macintosh Plus captures this feeling with its dreamy, ethereal sounds and samples. As the song progresses, it evokes a sense of longing and reflection on the past, causing the listener to contemplate the passage of time and the impermanence of life. The haunting melodies and distorted vocals create a sense of melancholy, but also a sense of acceptance and peace with the inevitable passage of time. It is a reminder to cherish the present moment and appreciate the fleeting beauty that surrounds us.

for all the people who never lived life before the internet, the "weird" nostalgia you felt was a longing for the past's hope of the future. years later it feels nostalgic in a different way, nostalgic for a time where you never thought the future would be like this this genre perfectly encapsulates the feeling of life's mystery before the internet came around. almost like that feeling when you still believed in magic idk what happened but "wonder" exists less and less maybe it's just me

it's nostalgia for a future that never happened, will never happen, it's why vaporwave has a "retro-futuristic" aesthetic. The video clips are all made completely of ads, ads that want to sell you what life is like and will be like or could be like. But now decades after we see how none of our lives really even echo any of it. It's a lament over the dream capitalism sold us when we were kids and watching TV and how it's faded unattainable qualities have made it beautiful.

It's envy as art, it's disgust remaking the world in its own image. It's easy to ignore.

That feeling when you've been listening to this song for years now and when you found this you thought to yourself "Things will get better, I'll be happy soon". But then here you are years later, still sad, still smoking weed, still listening to this, still trying to escape to a past you have never had or experienced because it reminds you of a time when you were happy. Then you realize that you are addicted to nostalgia and will probably never be happy because instead of mentally moving forward in your life you've stopped, still clinging to the tattered remains of happy memories. Oh, and you're only 21.
@americafirst42988 жыл бұрын
+SUNSETDOTCOM I guess the best thing to do would be to make that nostalgic past a part of your future reality. We've reached a period of stagnation because that progress-oriented mindset among people has been replaced with complacency and an over-exaggeration of the concept of compassion. There's no elevator of the outside that can bring us up, we have to lift ourselves up. At the end of the day we have to push through that barrier and make that future for ourselves.

You're only 21. Things tend to get better. Life is always a struggle, one way or the other; if you want to achieve whatever you define as success, the only constant in your life is that you'll have to work hard. So work at it, whatever it is you want to achieve. You either achieve your goals or die trying. Nostalgia is fine to experience, but don't hang onto it like a crutch. And this is coming from a 23 year old who isn't exactly having the greatest time right now; life is OK for me, but there are certainly areas which I want to see improvement, and there are big decisions that I'll have to make soon enough that will dictate my near future at the very least. So enjoy that S M O O T H V A P O R, and experience the full range of human emotion. How can we know happiness if we have never known sadness? But remember, this too shall pass, there will be better times, and worse times, ahead. But you're on this crazy rollercoaster called life, and as long as you keep getting back up when it knocks you down, that's all that really matters.

The capital society. Honestly I love it to death. It feels real because the world you live in is determined by the people themselves, not through the bindings of a forced regime. Through all the corruption, greedy businessmen, and liars, there's that semblance of a determined future that is within reach. An imagination expressed with each sale, an emotion conveyed with each commercial, its a wonderful construct that paves way for a brighter tomorrow. Its free for your eyes only. Only in a negative lense does it look cruel and bleak. I understand that through personal anguish. However, its a bitter road to take and we must all walk the good way with heads held high no matter the squander that surrounds us. It really is something worth the gratitude in the end. Great video man and a wonderful song to go with it. I've listened to it everyday.
@americafirst42988 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Franc The world is only cruel and bleak because people only accept it like that to make up for the fact that they aren't in a position to enjoy all that the world has to offer. But there is no external force that can provide the best things in life, we have to work and move forward in this world to get there. It's easy to dig the dirt for the potato when the fruit tree seems so high, but we must always reach forth for what is greater. I listen to this song every day, and always see not only nostalgic past, but a bright future before us all if we make it happen.

+Joseph Franc it is only the illusion of a better tomorrow, a mortgage taken out on a futures stock where everything gets better because we will it. These videos are a return to the dream that we once had, the dream that was light projected onto vapor, disintegrated in the next strong breeze. Now the breeze feels bittersweet, cool on our skin, bringing back the sensation of the memory and the memory that it is gone forever. I am bitter, indeed, that the dream was ever given to me. There is no salvation.
@bashostaringatthesky8888 жыл бұрын
+Elijah McGrew I agree that it has its flaws and cruel aspects, but you're saying it sucks compared to what? As of right now, even with all the wall street hustlers, fraudsters, offshore accounts, and government corruption it's still proven to lead human beings into the best standard of living we've ever experienced in the history of our civilization. The 90's was the height of that era and now we're getting to see all of its darkest qualities. I hope this will allow us to improve upon both our governmental and economic systems in the ages to come.

The exact choice of commercials and their emotional effect based on actors, costumes, props, and movement, plus the rhythm of them synchronizing with the music, as well as when the various cuts are made to flow from one clip to the next. Starting with the staccato cuts of the surreal kabuki actor, then slamming to the partygoers' car and the smiling girl, sliding to the couple rotating their hips in harmony as if the music was in the air, moving their bodies, then zipping along to the slow-motion woman bouncing perfectly in time... fish flags flap in the wind of a downtown plaza that might not be standing today, just after a seemingly faceless woman appears in a hazy vision, turning to face us... and as soon as we can wonder why, the vision is gone and soon athletes of a lost time are leaping at us and throwing each other around. Very few of them can do those things today. They're older. Perhaps even *old.* Yet here they are, young, unhindered. Here are the smiling partygoers, emerging from the celebration of a now-dead new year. Here is the couple, dancing for a mere two or three seconds. Their memories of that day have faded. But it's all back, simultaneously foggy and clear; resurrected by men, expressed by machines, as a time capsule. Of a time that maybe never existed at all. It's one hypnotizing choice to the next, and it lends a dreamlike unity to an otherwise meaningless sequence of obsolete advertisements. I've seen, and felt, almost nothing like it before. And no, I'm not high on anything. Except whatever mojo is apparently coursing through the video -- with a double dose in those 15 seconds. If I were ElFamosoDemon, I'd be deeply proud that I reached an editing high that so effectively served the genre.

Man, one day this is gonna be actual nostalgic music. This came out 8 years ago! I got into vaporwave because it exploited the nostalgic feelings I have of songs I would listen to on late 90's stereo systems as an impressionable kiddo.

I know that everyone says that Macintosh Plus is the best vaporwave artist, but Saint Pepsi is way better in my opinion.

Saint Pepsi is more future funk mixed with vaporwave and Macintosh is more the traditional ambient type vaporwave, but I guess its just preference. I prefer more of the 90s side of vaporwave, the wellness plaza mix is really good. Also jazzier stuff like mallsoft & Vektroid's 1995 album are the jam

Went to an empire of the sun concert last year and they opened the show with one whole hour of vintage vapor wave. It was fucking legendary. Will play this non stop at my store

These comments...Whew. I'm glad I'm not the only one who is nostalgic because of how the music sounds and the time period they were made in. Bring back vaporwave 2024, fr...
