Ballet, Opera, you name it, Saint-Saëns wrote it--splendidly.

The Most Important Recording Projects EVER: Samson and Delilah with David Hurwitz in all the roles. What a great comeback for Tinnitus Classics. You heard it here first.

Way back in the day, 1964 - I saw a great production of Samson and Delilah at the Metropolitan with a great cast- Rita Gorr, Jess Thomas, Gabriel Bacquier, under the direction of Georges Pretre and the collapse of the temple was brilliantly done- a whole row of columns collapsed, the stage full of terrified Philistines crying out, orchestra blasting, brilliant flashes of light - it really captured the terrifying scene. Doesn't seem like anyone has done it as well since! Thanks for you musical rendition too! Its a great opera from first note to last. best wishes.

Given how FEW great cello concertos there are, why the 2nd Saint-Saens is never, ever played (and seldom recorded) is a genuine puzzle......
@AlexMadorsky3 ай бұрын
I have read that the 2nd cello concerto is considered “difficult” compared to the 1st and this almost never performed. I have no idea what that is supposed to mean in this context. The 2nd is certainly not difficult on a listener’s ear, so I can only assume the difficulty in question is imposed on the performer. Or it’s all a bunch of bunk, pick your pleasure.

I prefer it any day to Schumann's, that study in grey and black, to paraphrase Whistler. But, as they used to say in the ads, there's always room for cello.

I enjoyed your Samson finale, David!

Those Philistines have so much fun. I admit it wasn't nice to blind poor Samson, but otherwise, they throw great parties.

I am restricted by copyright laws and can only play samples where I have permission, but you can easily find just about all of this stuff on KZbin and listen to complete works. It's a better option anyway.
