I do think Saint-Saens is underrated. He is often regarded as being a lightweight. No, the underlying structure is there, and the developing of themes is there. Perhaps, typically of French Romantic composes, this is not obvious, but both are there. Plus, there is the surface beauty which is rather obvious. I like all 5 of his piano concertos, but the 4th is my favorite.

This has always been my very favorite classical piece. I was amazed and delighted to discover this beautifully photographed live performance of Saint-Saens 4th piano concerto performed masterfully by Lorraine Min and conducted memorably by the fantastic Tania Miller. I just wish I had been there on that night. I have been asking the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to present it for years. The first movement is stunning in its understatement and gentleness. In the second movement the recurring melodies found throughout the piece become bold and triumphant. I don’t care to argue about which of the five piano concertos by Saint-Saens is the masterpiece. I’m more interested in experiencing what touches the human heart. This is some beautiful and very memorable music. And what an ending.

It's a huge favorite for me too. First time I heard it played was by French pianist Philipp Entremont with the Philadelphia Orchestra as it was known then. I was blown away, it was a long time ago, no KZbin then.

Part of a performance of a tv program with an orchestra sponsored by Bell Labs was online a few years back (and might still be). The historical Entremont performances were energetic.

About forty years ago my classical record club's monthly selection was Philippe Entremont playing Saint-Saens' piano concertos No. 2 and No. 4. I wore out the LP. I fell in love with love with the two piano concertos. Later, when CDs came out, I purchased a two-CD set of Entremont playing all five of Saint-Saens' piano concertos and play them often while walking with my mp3 player. I must agree with other commenters that Concertos 1,3 and 5 are also great concertos. Saint-Saens is by far France's greatest classical composer and his music should be played much more in concert halls. His melodies are beautiful.

Once it was possible to read the remark of a critic in, I believe, the New York Times... He said something like this: "Yesterday night we were privileged hearing in a concert a young, french pianist who could be classify by a single, plain word: a GENIOUS."

I had the same CD with Entremont, 2 and 4. This is where I fell in love with Saint Saens.

I grew up with that same recording by Entremont, which our family got from the Wordl Record Club some time in the 1960s. Like you I nearly wore the record out. I've always liked this no.4 better than no.2. When I was 17 the contrary motion octaves in the last movement were the most electrifying thing I had ever heard.

A musician who at the age of 8 played recitals in which people could call out for him to play one of the 32 Beethoven Sonatas, Camille Saint-Saens had an auspicious beginning to the music world. His music is always sane and beautiful. He is no Beethoven. He is just a magnificent composer and, in his day, a fantastic pianist. He is highly underrated as a composer and people need to recognize his depth of ability. His piano concertos are indeed underrated and they shouldn't be.

@Gary Allen on the contrary. i dont know what u have read. u but i have read he was ahead of his time and was criticised for writing rebelious, provocating music exciting the emotions of people. he was the opposite of what was traditional. i believe this to be more true since his music does not sound like any other of his contemporary composers.
@andrewpetersen52725 жыл бұрын
@@CT2507 No, Gary is more on the mark. In his day he was loved, but became thought of as a traditionalist..even to the point of being a reactionary. Music was moving on to the impressionism of Ravel and Debussy. He had no use for these new sounds and stayed true to his fundamental understanding. I love almost everything he put down. He certainly was a genius of composition for so many instruments. Time will make him a giant.

I am a great admirer of the music of Saint-Saens. I see that some have mentioned that Saint-Saens is to some extent underrated. I agree. The common reference to Saint-Saens as the "French Mendelssohn" doesn't help, as I think Mendelssohn is underrated as well. There was a dedicated and developing classical practice during the 19th century; and can be traced from Schubert through Mendelssohn and through Saint-Saens. Wonderful performance. The piece requires both a crispness of execution and full command of the tonal potential of the instrument. Mission accomplished.

Thankfully, Saint-Saëns is increasingly getting the recognition he deserves. Most of the operas have been performed, the concertos and symphonies receive frequent airings (although perhaps nog all of them often enough), the chamber music regularly planned and I've even seen a programme with S-S's film music recently.

The antiromantic Saint Saens writes here a specific kind of masterpiece, something which is not romantic, but looks rather like variations on a choral-type theme (this appears clearly in the end). The pianist is in the right tone: she does not drive the attention upon her, but is in perfect synergy with the orchestra.

Paul Pizzo All 5 of Saint Saens piano concertos should be heard more often instead of the endless repeats of Beethoven's 5 concertos - there is so much great music out there that seldom gets a look in because organizers are stuck with an all too narrow outlook.
