I am an American who has been living and working as a high school teacher in Italy for the past five years. I'm only know getting to the point where my Italian is maybe, just maybe, up to scratch when it comes to Orlando Furioso. I've gone ahead and bought an Italian-language edition, edited by Cristina Zampese and published by Rizzoli, and the Penguin edition in translation by Barbara Reynolds. In a way, Ariosto seems particularly appropriate to 2020: a perceptive and creative individual, stuck out of necessity in a job that isn't his passion, living and writing in a historical moment of great crisis and change. Orland Furioso is amazing because it looks back to the Carolingian Cycle and the Breton Cycle and at the same moment looks forward, combining the two traditions in a new and fresh way in order to comment on modern times and travails. Thank you for the recommend! A quick note: the Penguin trade editions are still in print, but I had to hunt a bit to find copies as I don't think these are run off in the numbers of other titles in the catalogue. People must either be unaware of this work or intimidated by its resemblance to a doorstopper (although I can report that in Italy the poem is still very much alive and well in schools and in the culture at large)!

I hadn't even heard of Orlando Furioso before, but now you've convinced me to add it to my "buy-when-found" list. A 1500 page epic poem isn't something that scares me off, so if it's good, I'm in!

The Reynolds translation is great. It's the only one I managed to make my way all the way through. The early 19c Rose translation is accurate but bombastic. The Harrington translation is very Elizabethan and fun, but he had his own hangups and didn't hesitate much on changing things he didn't like. Now that I've had a couple years of Italian study behind me, I'm working my way through Italo Calvino's abridgement-with-commentary which is fun, with wonderful penciled sketches.

I've never in my life been a verse / poetry person, yet this video convinces me to give Orlando, in the Reynolds translation, I try.

I'm working through the first volume, and yes, they do have it in trade. It's a bit weird, but I have the first volume in mass market, and the second in trade. I think I mentioned before how much I love this. Read the prose translation for a European Lit class in college. Ended up being one of my favorite required reading assignments
