Arika's weird combo puzzle training mode is kinda a franchise staple at this point but you're absolutely right that there's no excuse for them to not at the very least let you toggle between move names and notation.

A history of being badly implemented is not a reason to not fix something that is one of the first things a new player will encounter and will keep them from being able to learn the game.

if they want to have a puzzle training mode that would be fine, just as long as there is a proper combo mission mode also available. Also a tutorial that explains universal mechanics is essential, especially in a game with mechanics such as Gougi. Yeah having a nod to the old school games is cool, but imagine this was someones first fighting game, or at least first to properly learn, I would just give up on FGs and go play something else.

Reminds me of the last trial in Persona 4 Arena and some Installments of Blazblue where you had some non-sensical objective to hit, like use Attack XY 4 times in a combo. Those could be mad hard or mad cheap. Point is they tested your knowledge about the combo system, but did not do anything to improve your game. A big no-go for me personally.

Sajam has a point about the character trials. I remember playing this game for like a day or two, not being able to figure anything out because I hadn't played enough similar games, not being able to find an explanation online and just going back to Injustice 2 or whatever game I was playing at the time. If you're supposed to run for a combo to link, you need to fucking indicate that.

What type of fighting games are you used to playing? Every fighting game has some combos that are like that. It may say jump but as you do the combo you find you have to forward jump. Or it starts you on the middle but you find you have to be in the corner

Some where between minimum wage and unpaid interns from a game design school for a few hours would have noticed the challenge inputs didn't actually work. Just needed warm bodies that hadn't been playing the game for months to try picking it up and doing the tutorial content.

I thought that generally command trials teach you combos that are difficult to do and demonstrate weird thing they character can do but they aren't good combos that you want to do or are optimal. I've never seen a tourn where people are just doing combos from the trials. It's not just the devs crunching the data and finding the perfect combos and just giving them to you in a list. Arika had to work around copyrights with Namco (who published the original Fighting Layer) so they wouldn’t get sued and ultimately bankrupt (because of the limited budget they have). It is what it is, but at least this game exists against all odds.

I think before you play the game you need to watch actual matches. Me personally I know I'm not gonna think of everything a character can do when I first get in to the training mode then I just drop the character. But seeing high level play gives you more insite to what a dumb seeming move can actually do. But don't listen to me I wanted you to play V. I don't know if you will see this Sajam but I just watched a tournament an Sharon might be your girl. She has bullet resources like Johnny's coin. She can interrupt characters long range with the bullets an run in for combos. Fast movement speed. An simple confirms that are extended with her bullet super. Also paired with stealth rapter she gets access to a command jump which gives you a better angle to shoot at an bait anti air options. Play Terry If you want it's your stream an your enjoyment but smell the roses

You can literally go throw the list of animation principles and see that this games animations meet those standards while Mk11 consitently does not. Power Rangers has really good animation work. It's no 3rd Strike but it's way better than anything from NRS.

Master Leonard There’s plenty more on the FEXL Discord (close to 2K members 🥳), but there’s more players on the PS4 than on Steam, but once crossplay is added, it won’t matter which system you play on, similar to “Fantasy Strike” or “Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid”

Depends what your expectations are. It is a fun game if you are looking for an offensive rushdown heavy fighter that is easy to jump into, but fairly strict on the execution compared to modern Street fighters (less input latency). Also, dont expect a bunch of single player content, just the basics. And unless the player base grows, your best bet to get online matches is to either get some friends to buy it, or join a discord for matchmaking. I stopped heavily playing when the ranked matchmaking slowed. That being said, it was honestly one of my more favored fighters to come out this gen, and having rollback added is a good time to jump back in. My taste leans more old school with the fighters, so this fits the bill. And dont let people talking down on the gougi system keep you away. The gougi system adds some uniqueness to the game and lets you influence a bit of how your game plan will be in a match, based on your preference. Theres probably about 5 or 6 gougis that are very strong and competitive, but others that are still fun to mess with. Wait for a sale if you arent sure.

From what I've seen so far in this video the game UI looks fucking stupid. Way to get people interested in the game by having a bunch of character most people don't know about and telling them to do "ryusui". I'm honestly not sure if the game wants to step out of core fgc fanbase that are also composed of retro gamers. It's as if its making sure it stays niche. Also it's funny you bring up doing research and still call him "dude in the video" like his name isn't under video

Instead of thrashing this game for its flaws you could do better by spreading the word and supporting the developers so it can be improved. (Speaking for the comments not the video)

For instance, Trials Mode definitely needs both command display and challenge demonstrations
