In the U.S. When the gates when back up and the lights were still flashing, about 13 cars would have gone by and wouldn't have waited for the lights and bells to stop, and there most likely would have been one that merely missed the gate when it came back down, I mean I wished people actually paid attention to the crossing in America :/

It's completely random how people respond in the Netherlands. The biggest crossing in my city lies next to a station (but then a station with 2 platforms at the outside of the tracks instead of the arrangement in this video). Most of the time it can be a combined closing for an intercity train that doesn't stop at the station and after that the stoptrain to Leiden.It's a notorouis crossing: almost everytime there is one person (or more) that just cross and don't want to wait between trains (multiple people have found their death at that crossing already)But sometimes when I'm there, just there or taking a video, everyone waits patiently. You never can tell what will happen.I think that in this video people were cautious to say the least when the barriers came back up but 'hesitated' for a little while.

I think the biggest difference is the time you have to wait before the train actually passes by, which is mostly down to the fact that it's probably far more likely to encounter a slow-running freight train then a fast passengertrain.Waiting for a levelcrossing while a slow train is heading towards the crossing probably gets on people's nerves, while the chance you encounter a passenger train on full speed or a rather fast running freight-train in the Netherlands is less likely to have you ignore the lights and lowering barriers, as it is far more likely this will end your life. Besides (and let me get this straight, this is not to start a 'Europe vs USA' flame-war) the average level crossing in Europe works close to flawless. We do have level crossing malfunctions in the Netherlands, but in those cases the malfunction is either quickly dealt with by demanding train drivers to stop in front of every crossing and (if necessary) activate the crossing by entering the island-section, or slowly drive forward and blast the horn a few times and then enter the crossing. I know only one video that features a serious malfunction from a Dutch level crossing. Considering that we have over 2000 of them (not all of them have barriers or other 'active' protection) in our small country, I think that is quite something.

Uh, dat is nog steeds standaard. Slechts op weinig plekken worden de bellen (vaak op verzoek van de bewoners) uitgeschakeld als de bomen horizontaal liggen.

Usually, you don't get such a long pre-warning in The Netherlands. But level crossings at stations are usually controlled by the conductor, to prevent the crossing from activating when the train rolls into the station and would (usually) enter the announcement section. Instead, the train encounters a signal at danger at the end of the platform and the conductor has to insert a key in a small box on the platform that basically turns the platform-track into a normal announcement section, which in turn activates the crossing. Once the crossing has closed completely, the signal will change to safe (or at least: 'better than danger'). This is called the 'stop-through-circuit': while travelling, the path a train is given travels along trackside electronics. A train that does not call at the station, also won't see a signal at danger (of course, given that there is no train in the section behind it) but will be able to pass at full speed, with the crossing activating in time.
