I was very impressed with how Sakad got into Cunningham's head and psyched him off his game. Even more impressed how Sakad being much smaller and giving up massive reach and even raw speed, was able to counter or avoid almost every kick and most punches. If Sakad clearly won it would not have been judged a draw. Obviously you don't understand IKA rules. Based soely on this video I would have it as a draw or Peter Cunningham as winning. If there is no KO or TKO then the number of kicks and punches are the deciding factor. Sakad clearly didn't land many of his kicks and compared to Peter threw far fewer punches.

Great vid, had this on VHS in 1996, would watch it over and over when I was training in MT. Sakad timing is beautiful the amount of times he beat Cunningham to a kick or punch. The judges didn’t score sweeps or leg kicks in those days. They had no idea about Muay Thai scoring, their lens at the time was boxing and PKA style kickboxing. This was the case with many of the early fights against the thais.

This is a classic muay thai style vs kickboxing style..against the agile kickboxer fighter, all he have to do is to keep doing that low kick, it will add up and thus make the kickboxer slower the longer the fight drag on. Should the fight given a few more rounds it would be clearly shown the power of muay thai low kicks.

It wasn't quite kickboxing rules, it was wka rules, which allowed punches and kicks to the whole body, no clinch knees, no throws, etc. definitely weighted against traditional muay thai but not strictly speaking standard kickboxing rules. Having said that, I scored it for Sakad, but if you liked flashy techniques and didn't recognize some of what was going on, I can see a judge scoring it for Peter.

Compared to well known Thai boxers, Saked did nothing at all. Cunningham isn’t up to par with high grade Thai boxers at all, but he survived this fight pretty strong and cocky, something most kick boxers rarely have a chance to do against skilled Muay Thai practitioners.

Junglematt, State law in California didn't allow elbows so bringing that up is useless. Further the gym which promoted this fight was Muay Thai Academy of America. They and the state set the rules for the event. As I said earlier, I also had Sakad WINNING this FIRST fight conclusively, but in the rematch which was held in Australia, Peter did indeed dominate. As per Peter taking the fight on short notice, I wonder where you got your information as I was on very friendly terms with both Muay Thai Academy and the Jet Center and that was my understanding. That said, both fighters seemed to have enormous respect for one another. Both were warriors of the highest order.
