The sharp point that you unscrewed and could not fine, what a person can use it for is to make larger circles by extending the device lay it flat on the material and inserting the point in the hole above the large black point. There is no threads so you have to hold down so it will not move

Hi Doug, is it made of plastic or metal? and can it take standard pica pencil in it, or can the pencil use after market leads? thanks

This is made of metal. it comes with several spare pencil leads. The lead size is approx 2.8mm x 120mm long so I would think any lead about that size should work.

yes it is aluminum and if yours is plastic I am afraid you have a fake.
