I was taught to sharpen in a figure 8 on a wet stone. I also finish my edge on a cotton wheel with polishing compound for stainless steel. I can shave with my tools, and knives.

@@southernohiosolarhomestead8477 On knives, your 'shaving the stone' works too, but the angles are critical. There are left hand and right hand blades. For my grafting knives I use a neutral angle so I can shave left or right handed, depending on my access to the tree or branch.

No, not on a diamond, on water & oil stones, yes but not on diamond.
