As someone that has been in the federal government for going on 14 years this interview is 100% true on all aspects. The hiring process is long but the benefits and salary is rewarding. As we say in the government and military "hurry up and wait".

You can google government employees' salaries. It won't give you information about the locality pay included, but it is public knowledge otherwise. Also, getting a government job is tedious, but once you do get one, the opportunities are pretty good. You just hope you aren't in a trash agency because leaving for another federal job might take a bit of networking. Which can be a pain depending on where you are coming from.

One factor that will make the hiring process a lot longer is if the position requires a security clearance and the applicant doesn't have one already.

I'm onboard with pay transparency but that's assuming everybody performs the same . We all have that coworker that is always taking time off, barely does the job and gets paid just the same . Some people are more ambitious and know there worth and know how to negotiate . These are skills that elevate people to hire pay ranges . Pay transparency for pay ranges is great but no one should know how much you actually make .

Interesting. I work for the DON and my management absolutely does NOT want team members talking about salary, bonuses, etc. In fact, it is highly discouraged within many groups to talk about what people’s incomes and salaries are.

Yeah, especially if they already have an internal candidate in mind and post the job anyway because they have to. Way to waste all the applicants' time.
