Grabbed one of these at Hamvention this year when they were on sale and I've been very happy with it. With a 24AH battery I'm able to power my 891, LDG tuner, ThinkPad laptop, and my phone in the field.

Great video. I have a couple of those boxes. One configuration also uses the GVB-8 Genasun and has a 50ah LiFePo4. I changed the powerpole input color to yellow/black as all my solar connections are yellow and battery connections are blue. I also inserted power poles on the input power wiring, just as you did. The Genasun and battery both fit inside together. Sweet combo. Thanks for arranging the promotion. It’s great to have a LiFePo4 box we can charge with anything 5v on up. 73s

@@HamRadio2 Battery that fits is the Nermak 1250. It has been delivering full 50ah repeatedly as measured on the buddipole powermini 2. But I don’t know long term.

Jason, yes you can charge the FT-5D with 12v. The part number E-DC-6 is a bare wire cable with a pin plug. I put power poles on mine. This cable works on FT-1DR, FT-2DR, FT-3DR, FT-5DR, -FT-252, FT-257, -270R, -277R, -70DR, VX-6R, VX-8DR, FT-817, FT818

Just received mine. Found a 50ah battery on Amazon that should fit perfectly.

The Kenwood ht's that have NiCd or NiMh batteries typically have a constant current charging circuit connected to that 13.8v port, set to charge the battery pack at a 1/10th C charging rate. These batteries are designed to charge at that rate indefinitely without damage. Lithium batteries need a different charging algorthm, so you'll usually see them with a proprietary charging stand.

@hamradio2 I got one of these boxes from your birthday video. Does the toggle switch in the upper right corner do anything? On mine the led never comes on and the boxes outlets are “hot” regardless of the position of the switch. I’m thinking the switch is defective and constantly in an on state.

Was going to build a battery box but based on your review, I ordered one as it also was on sale. I found the parts to be pretty cheap as compared to other builds I have done with parts from Powerwerx, etc. In fact, the voltmeter was DOA and GP's wanted me to ship the whole box back rather than just send me a new voltmeter. Way too much trouble. So, I'll just get quality powermeter myself and drop it in which now makes this no longer a good deal.

It sounds like you want higher quality parts for a cheap price. This box is a $80, and that's what you get. The powerwerx box does have better parts but it starts at $130 and doesn't have nearly as many powerpole ports at this one does. This is also the reason why I have multiple battery boxes

Agree that having multiple battery boxes for different purposes is good. This would have been adequate for what I needed. Biggest disappointment was that it was DOA (voltmeter) likely due to the fact that it is not a "quality" part. Which was my real point. Was also disappointed in GP's response. I ran customer service units for very large companies in my professional life and still am amazed at how many companies I deal with (big or small) just don't get how to win and keep customers. It would have been so simple for them to say, sorry that it came DOA, we'll get a voltmeter right out to you ... I would have been a raving fan. Now I'm a disgruntled customer. With LiFePO4 batteries I've seen the max continues discharge rate is just over 9 amps. So if you use an HF transceiver in POTA what's your max Tx watts? And do you then disconnect HTs that are charging when Tx on HF or just run QRP e.g. 5 or 10 watts? Thanks 73s KF0EAU

Save yourself some money...buy the same box from HF and make the internals to your needs...9.99 for the box and go from there.
