Not enough people are watching this type of real analysis of the ups and downs of coaching in the NFL. Just real, honest, and genuine conversation - but most importantly knowledge, experience, sympathy, and credibility about the subject matter. Not like the bullshit emotional ratings driven media. These are three guys that competed and hated the Jets for many years, yet all they have to say is how sympathetic they are to the situation that Saleh found himself in. This is what every sports show should be like - real, intelligent, and human. Less media drivel from morons who have no idea what they are talking about and more of this, please.

To Mike's point about guys thinking about their next job: This is a massive time for the interim coach to step in as a leader and connect the quality of the work they do NOW to the future they're worried about. As a surgical residency educator who has to command people leaving the hospital every year, it's critical to emphasize that 1) attention to detail in the present accumulates to portable understanding that can impact people in the future and 2) that YOU will have their back throughout that process and will make them the best they can be, and arm them to be great at their next job regardless of what their future holds. An uncertain future is NOT an excuse for a lack of unity, and more often than not, you can shape that future with eliminations of distractions in the present.

Listening to coaches in non-interview situations is always the best way to learn if you're not in the coaching/playing field directly. That and studying film. I've had the opportunity to listen to a ton of great coaches - HS to College and some Pro. And in my film studies I'd ask questions to the coaches I knew. There are also coaching seminars out there on youtube - you can learn that way as well. Takes time - but truly time well spent if you want to understand this very involved game of football. (great historians out there as well teach a lot about this game from a big perspective).

Sid Gillman was a real proponent of the One-Back (12 Personnel) Formation. From what I know of coaches who knew him well, he always felt that one-back was the future. Gibbs from Coryell - Coryell really learned from Gillman, changing from his early work with the I-Formation when that was the new thing to a more pass spread w/ quick power --- all this is always a form of Power Spread. Always - all ways - is the same in this game. Looking to evolve the usage of Space (w/ Timing) and always coming back to the Power - the root of the game in the trenches.

I couldn’t find anything on the Detroit formation. Bill did touch on something that some of us casual fans think isn’t possible. It doesn’t matter what a coach is known for. They can coach any position in the field. Bill when he started her wasn’t even a coach. He was a gopher which meant he’d go pick up players from the airport, take care of the field, and whatever the team wanted him to do. He also mentioned in this video that coached the TEs, he was a special teams coach, and DBs coach. Point is these professional coaches can coach any position. Just because the media runs with a coach coaching out of position doesn’t make it true. They just don’t know any better.
