I live in Salem, don't move here at all... This place has declined so much its insane. I've watched so many businesses leave in the last 4-5 years there soon won't be any jobs here... Hoping to leave myself sometime soon.. if not leaving the country alltogether.

When you live in "the ghetto" part of salem and tuned in to see if your neighborhood made the list for all the wrong reasons 😂. So this a long winded comment. Short version: Tl;dr salem has its perk but also has its downsides. Best to look into both sides and see if the good outweighs the bad for you and your family before moving here. Long version: I know a lot of fellow salem residents in the comments aren't painting the most pleasant picture of our city, and we definitely have our fair share of issues just like most other places, but honestly there are good things about here too. I think it's just a lot of us who lived here for long amounts of time have seen a decline in certain areas and certain issues that have become a problem, and aren't happy with how those certain issues are being handled. Salem has its perks too though. If you want some place that's not huge city vibes but also not small country town, but somewhere in between, this would be a good place to at least look into. And with portland just a short drive away in one direction, you can easily go to a big city when you are in the mood. Then the coast and the ocean about the same distance to the west, and plenty of wooded areas and mountains to go hike near by, rivers for swimming and fishing, you can drive out into the country easily, drive to Mt hood and play in the snow, and even desert if you drive far enough... You have literally every terrain right around you all depending which direction you go. That's my favorite part of living here. Not too many places you have all that right at your back door. And here, all those are literally right around you. With that being said it's not perfect here either and one look at the comments and you can see that lol so I won't bother going into detail. But yeah, that's about all for my ted talk. Thanks for listening if you made it this far, lol

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences as a fellow Salemander. Which direction do you like to drive to get away from the city? My husband and I love the beach and heading out to the coast. Although we just went there for labor day weekend and it was soooo cold and foggy. Not what we expected since it was almost 90 degrees in town.

West salem is the nicest, cleanest, and safest part of salem to live in. The traffic over the bridge is mild at worst. The only real disadvantage of West Salem is it doesn't offer a lot to do without going over the bridge. But without a doubt if you're raising a family it's the best part to live in.

@@SalemORFirst things that comes to my mind are: 1.) “Big-ish” city that still retains remnants of a small town feel to it. 2.) 1hr-2hr from all sort of different outdoor experiences (many hikes, the coast etc). 3hrs if you want to experience the high desert of central Oregon. 3.) The wine 🍷 😍. This is wine country and I love it for it. Tons of vineyards and wines to experience. There’s most likely more depending on who you ask but these are what popped into my head first 😁

What is your best tip for people to get to know there neighbors before buying a house?
@huntercatalcazar3728
@huntercatalcazar3728 Ай бұрын
At Summer time people is out of their houses, when You check a potencial house to buy You see & hear the surroundings. The house in sale always are clean & the yard done, but what about the potencial neighbors houses? I rather live outside Salem at the outskirts than between drama & a circus. Peace of mind is better then gold.😁

What areas are more prone to fires?
@SalemOR
@SalemOR Ай бұрын
Mainly the Oregon forests are prone to wild fires. That would include most of the land to the East of the Cascade mountain range. Salem it's self is far enough aware where we do not need to worry much about the wildfires encroaching in on the city. We do get smoke (depending on the wind direction) which should be a consideration.
@erwinl.8152
@erwinl.8152 Ай бұрын
The further east you go from the wet coastal range, the more fire prone. Stay on the west side of the Willamette.

Any fire that spreads to Salem from the cascades would need to travel downhill and against the wind across 20 miles of farmland. Not going to happen.

Here is my Salem Neighborhood Map Guide where I've catalogued all of my videos based on neighborhood: www.google.com/maps/d/u/0/edit?mid=1UK9PzG92rekmE8C4rdhaVY_E7ghbJgc&usp=sharing

Property taxes are considerably lower in Keizer. Also, Keizer has more of a small town feel.
@SalemOR
@SalemOR 23 күн бұрын
Yes, I would agree that Keizer has lower taxes. At the end of the day I wouldn't say the tax savings are enough to encourage someone to move there for that reason alone, but it does have an impact. What else should others know about Salem or Keizer before moving here that I didn't mention?

at 0:35 I'm already afraid people randomly operate on the WRONG side of the road in your town. That's a hillbilly/maga thing.

What a strange thing to say... The biker was on the "wrong side" because they were passing me as I was walking. I don't know about you, but I'd prefer for the biker to move over to the "wrong side" momentarily rather than plow right through me.
