This gaming pc with an AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D and an RTX 4070 was shipped to my customer and arrived broken. Now it's up to my computer repair shop to fix it. This desktop has some expensive tech but the shipping company didn't care when they tossed it around and bent the heatsink. This technology is tough though, and was able to survive thanks to the greatest technician that's ever lived.

The shipper is just trying to get packages from A to B. It's on the seller to pick the shipping service that guarantees appropriate handling. At the extreme high end, scientific equipment is transported in crates with accelerometers that will void the shipment if they so much as run over a pothole.

For a bit of context, the air cooler in that PC, the Deepcool AK620, is on the heavier side even for dual tower air coolers go: 1456g of net weight. (For context, Noctua NH-D15 is 1320g and Thermalright PA120 is 1020g.) So when a full desktop with an AK620 is mailed, it has a slightly higher chance of bending than others, whether it be the cooler itself or, god forbid, the motherboard. If you are looking to have a full desktop shipped, make sure to check the cooler's weight; your wallet will thank you later.

@EonNShadow
@EonNShadow 8 ай бұрын
This mostly depends on the technical skill of the buyer. You have to remember: most people who use computers nowadays literally think everything happening beyond the outside of the case is literally magic. ...Or is at least similarly complicated. I'm sure someone with more technical skill would love to buy a PC in that state, but for the general population, they just want a magic box that works when they plug it in.
@bpdmf2798
@bpdmf2798 8 ай бұрын
^^^ Yeah, I tell people that building a PC is only marginally harder than Legos and they don't believe me. I tell them it's like Legos but with a few idiot proof wired connections. Magic is the correct word for what they think goes on, and on a technical level in the circuitry is as damn close to magic as humans have achieved, but the basic maintaining and putting together hardware is extremely easy. My aunt is terrified to even save a .docx so I had to teach her to always "save as" and give it a new name if she wants to really be sure she isn't overwriting something (the advice worked but created a massive folder full of letters but she was happy because she wasn't afraid anymore of accidentally overwriting an old letter) because she didn't understand that just clicking "save" updates the active document saved. Whatever works for her though, it's not my computer.

@@GSBarlevwell either that or use expanding foam. Both ways will involve you opening up your PC anyways so might aswell, that's why I always recommend buying your pre-built locally or build your own/commission a custom builder. There is just too many drawbacks in ordering a pre-built out of town, it's either a huge hassel to ship or you'll have to pay premium prices for some stablizing brackets

I work in shipping. Our company policy is that parcels have to be packaged in a way that they can "withstand normal handling". This includes going through package sorting machines, ending up at the bottom of a bin full of other packages, some level of force like surviving minor drops, being able to survive being tumbled and turned over, etc. etc. We will note physical signs of damage on the parcels themselves (assuming that the guy moving the parcel is doing his job correctly), but it is still ultimately up to the recipient to check the package for damage before accepting their delivery. If the damage is not on record with us before the delivery is accepted, then you won't get reimbursed for any damage sustained during shipping. Which is why it's super important to always check your deliveries for damage before signing anything. Make the delivery driver note the damage on the shipping document or in their PDAs before signing anything. Alternatively you are well within your rights to refuse the delivery if you belive the parcel to be too damaged. As for this PC, i'd definitely say that even with the best packing foam this wouldn't have been secured enough to ship. The heat sink is heavy enough that it's GOING to sustain damage by being handled. Frankly i don't see how this could have been shipped correctly while assembled. Knowing first-hand how packages get handled and the level of abuse that they have to be able to survive, i'd probably have shipped the heat sink and GPU separately, or at the very least not attached to the motherboard.

This includes going through package sorting machines, ending up at the bottom of a bin full of other packages, some level of force like surviving minor drops, being able to survive being tumbled and turned over, etc. etc." Well, that's the shipping company fault for not giving a shit. It should be depending on the package nature. You can't treat the same way a stuffed toy and a 2k $ PC, it's just dumb. "If the damage is not on record with us before the delivery is accepted, then you won't get reimbursed for any damage sustained during shipping." In my country (I'm not american for the record), it doesn't work like that for the very simple reason that some damages can't be visible from the outside (the box containing the product may be clean and have absolutely no damage) while there are big issues in the inside like this video shows for example. "As for this PC, i'd definitely say that even with the best packing foam this wouldn't have been secured enough to ship." Yeah, it couldn't have been secured enough to ship because of those same shipping companies you worked for. If these companies would do their job properly, the PCs would've absolutely no issue if handled properly and professionally. With bubble wrap or foam everywhere (especially under the heat sink and the gpu), it would be secured enough for the weight matter. Every single GPU should have (and most of them have) and anti-sag bracket. It secures the GPU from these kinds of issues
@Fraggr92
@Fraggr92 4 ай бұрын
@@nico7674 "You can't treat the same way a stuffed toy and a 2k $ PC, it's just dumb." We have literally no way of knowing what's inside parcels. The vast majority of packages we receive are just nondescript brown cardboard boxes with no indication of their contents. Which is exactly how you want it in order to reduce the risk of theft. This means that every parcel gets treated the same way. And considering that we handle literal THOUSANDS of packages and parcels every single day despite only being a relatively small shipping hub, we can not treat every single parcel as if it was worth thousands of dollars. That is just not economically or logistically feasible. Shipping would cost more than the contents of the parcel were worth. "In my country (I'm not american for the record), it doesn't work like that for the very simple reason that some damages can't be visible from the outside " I guarantee that it works exactly like that. The difference is that if the damage is not on record with the shipping company, then the sender most of the time just eats the cost of sending you a replacement. So under normal circumstances, the end recipient rarely ends up financially liable for accepting damaged goods. Senders on the other hand often end up greatly affected when procedure doesn't get followed. "If these companies would do their job properly, the PCs would've absolutely no issue if handled properly and professionally." See that's the thing. Shipping companies do their jobs properly most of the time. Most people just don't know the terms they're agreeing to when using various shipping companies because few people actually read the shipping terms before placing orders. The issue is mostly not that shipping companies don't do their jobs, it's that customers wildly overestimate what they're actually paying the shipping companies for. As an example i can't even count how many times i've made a delivery to a client that expected me to carry a 200kg sofa up 3 flights of stairs for them and put it inside their appartment on my own. Meanwhile if you actually read the shipping terms it clearly states we only deliver to your front door or to the edge of your property (whichever is more feasible), and that we don't offer to carry goods inside your house or appartment. Read what you're actually paying for to avoid confusion. "With bubble wrap or foam everywhere (especially under the heat sink and the gpu), it would be secured enough for the weight matter." You've clearly never worked in shipping or set foot inside a shipping hub.

Which is exactly how you want it in order to reduce the risk of theft. This means that every parcel gets treated the same way." I'm not talking about writing on it what it contains exactly, they could atleast put a "FRAGILE" on the cardboard or something like that. So the employees know it's actually fragile without knowing what's inside. " And considering that we handle literal THOUSANDS of packages and parcels every single day despite only being a relatively small shipping hub, we can not treat every single parcel as if it was worth thousands of dollars. That is just not economically or logistically feasible. Shipping would cost more than the contents of the parcel were worth." Well, the fact that you're not enough to do that kind of work isn't the customer's or even the employee's problem, it's the company's problem to ensure that the job is well done but as I said, the issue is these companies don't give a shit about their customers. "I guarantee that it works exactly like that. The difference is that if the damage is not on record with the shipping company, then the sender most of the time just eats the cost of sending you a replacement. So under normal circumstances, the end recipient rarely ends up financially liable for accepting damaged goods. Senders on the other hand often end up greatly affected when procedure doesn't get followed." Well, in your country maybe, not in mine. i've had a few examples where my order was crushed inside while it had no visible damage on the outside of the cardboard and I still got a replacement or a refund with no issue. "As an example i can't even count how many times i've made a delivery to a client that expected me to carry a 200kg sofa up 3 flights of stairs for them and put it inside their appartment on my own. There's a difference between the fact that the contract states that you have to deliver in the guy's appartment or not and the fact that your order is destroyed because of the way it's been treated through the shipping process dude, you can't compare those things. I've personally never seen a shipping contract stating that your order can be destroyed because of the shipping process and you can't do anything about it xD. "You've clearly never worked in shipping or set foot inside a shipping hub." No, I've never done this job and I truly think that I would become crazy doing it when I see that you think this is totally normal. And Btw, the part of the comment you were answering when I was talking about the foam, bubble wrapper and stuff, I was talking about the seller doing it (putting foam and bubble wrapper inside the PC to reduce the risks), not the shipping company

It's always the seller, because the seller picks the shipping. They control how its packaged, who is carrying it, etc etc.

Had someone come into our repair shop with a custom gaming PC with that same cooler that was shipped from Canada to the US. The cooler in hers was bent even more, but everything worked great. Although, she wanted to replace the cooler to air on the side of caution.
