The city rises on the Tyrrhenian Sea bay of the same name, between the Amalfi Coast (to the west) and the Sele plain (to the southeast), in place.
Salerno's terrain is very diverse, in fact it extends from sea level to 953 meters.
The city is crossed by the Irno River, which marked its eastern border until the middle of the last century. The city also has a small lake called Brignano
Interestingly, in ancient times Salerno was a Roman colony. In 646 it was conquered by the Lombards. In 839 it became the capital of the Principality of Salerno, and then the famous medical school in Salerno was founded, where many Arabic and Jewish medical works were translated. Salerno was number one in European medicine in the Middle Ages.
The symbol of the city is the Arechi Castle, built in the late Roman or Byzantine era, which was part of the city's defense system. Later enlarged and fortified, the manor was never captured. It houses a museum, accommodation and congress activities. Not far from the castle you can also visit the Bastille, a circular observation tower built by Gisulfo II for defensive purposes.
In the local cathedral there is the tomb of Saint. Matthew, the Evangelist, one of the twelve Apostles. Every year, on September 21, on the occasion of the memory of St. Matthew the Evangelist, a procession carrying figures of the Apostle and Pope Gregory VII passes through the streets of Salerno
In September 1943, during World War II, Salerno was the place where the road was opened for the march towards Rome. In the period after the landing (from February 1944), the city hosted the first governments of post-fascist Italy and the fleeing Royal Family, becoming the capital of Italy until the liberation of Rome (early June 1944).
In 1954, the city of Salerno was hit by a massive flood, causing hundreds of deaths, and in 1980 it was also hit by an earthquake.
