Sally Goodin (fiddle lesson)

Sally Goodin is one of the best known old time southern fiddle tunes. In this lesson I show the simplest possible version, followed by a series of variations, many using open string and fourth finger drones. The final variation goes up into third position. Nice to hear a shout-out for Frank Kilkelly 👍 As you say, a real master of chordal variation! I also enjoyed playing with him for many years ☺️ Love this tune, and have listened to many different versions. Byron Berline made it his own, with a beautiful and influential interpretation. But the best exponent of Sally Goodin (as well as every other Old-time tune you could mention, in my opinion!) Is Michael Cleveland. Phenomenal groove, rich double stops, great variations, and really bluesy with it. Have you heard him playing SG (lots of clips on KZbin)? Your channel is great Chris! I'd like to request a new category at some stage: "Analysing the Style of Great Fiddle Players". (Starting with Michael Cleveland, hopefully 😃) I'm sure you could find an endless vein of material with this topic: you've studied so many great players yourself, you must know a lot of their characteristic tricks and licks already. And if they're still alive and happy to be interviewed, a video chat with them relating to the nitty gritty of their style would I'm sure attract a lot of interest.

I think the fact that we tense up with our picky for the A drone might also tense up the bow pressure in our right hand making it out of tune? AEae is easier

That's a difficult question Kathleen! I think to me it's more important who I'm playing with rather than what I'm playing. But if I had to choose, it would be Western Swing.
