This incorrect (0:31); Tony was a VERY good, loyal friend, and when Jack Klugman lost his ability to speak (due to throat cancer), Tony was more than happy, not just to reunite with his friend, and help him make money, but, also to help Jack emotionally and supportively. There was an Odd Coupke TV movie made (I believe it was after this show was filmed), and they continued to work together. Like many, I love the Odd Couple, and like many, I also fell in love with it in late night syndication. There's a little gag reel, which was made part of the show's DVD box set, and though it was (sadly) released after Tony's passing, it's hosted by Jack (kzbin.info/www/bejne/qHmvo2ahor2HZpY), and he tells about his love for his good friend, Tony. In what's one of the best tributes I can think of, the reel, clips of outtakes, is filthy-funny (a lot of people don't know that Tony loved 'dirty' jokes) a one of my favourite is when Tony and Al (Molinaro - aka Murray the cop) are sitting, waiting for them to start filming, and they do this hysterical 'ramking' competition, (with the added 'plus' of doing 'spit takes), with each one o the pair trying to out-do the other. RiP, Tony, and thanks.

Tony was a class act. A Gentleman. Loved The Odd Couple growing up. Still watch it today. Miss these celebrities and type of actors. Loved 70’s and 80’s TV and Carson, Merv, Cavett, Mike Douglas. These actors and shows hold a special place in a lot of people’s hearts and minds. You only had a few channels to watch and a lot of times one TV if you were lucky. So what you watched was limited. Watched a lot of shows with parents. But find myself watching all that stuff today. Not just out of nostalgia, but a lot of it is far better than what’s on now. Lots of good mystery and police shows, action show’s, Mission Impossible, Mannix, 5-0 (Jack Lord). List goes on and on. Good stuff still being made today. Not everything horrible. Times were just different. My youth, my memories.

Tony is a brave man. To answer her inane questions with his true feelings. This would be the equivalent of asking someone prominent today about Taylor Swift and the response "She has only one iota of actual talent. SHe's quite over rated" (I am NOT saying this don;t attack me) I am just pointing out saying Marilyn Monroe had ALMOST no talent back then was a Huge statement. I;m sure Randall was not loved at Hollywood parties.
@zuketroop17 ай бұрын
I agree. Taylor Swift writes a cute song, at least her early country ones, but she can't sing. Singing her own stuff she can get away with, but not covers of others and duets with those who can sing. I never met Tony Randall but he was great as a actor and performer and Sally Jesse Raphael was annoying.
@Piggy-Oink-Oink7 ай бұрын
@@zuketroop1 Well notice how Tony "LIT UP" and was excited to talk about Debbie Reynolds. I think he is just a totally honest man to HIMSELF and when he sees talent he supports it. And if the talent in 'his" opinion is over rated and he is asked to give his feelings...he did. Here is some funny Randall info to back up what I say. In 1975 Tony finally won Best Actor in a Sitcom at The Emmy Awards. When he got on stage this is what he actually said "I DONT THANK YOU. I Should have been given this award three years ago. But none of you like me" And he walked off the stage LOL

I think I like Tony even more because of his comments about Marilyn. I love that honesty. Marilyn was the great untouchable goddess of Hollywood that nobody dared to publicly say anything bad about. But in interviews in third tier magazines and newspapers and 2 AM TV shows and low viewership PBS programs, many people admitted that she had a horrible work ethic, and was very hard to handle on set, and needed constant coaching. A true director's nightmare. So if anything, his remarks on Marilyn may have exhibited my favorite aspect of Tony Randall's personality. He abhorred lying, exaggeration, and deception, and was never afraid of any backlash from his telling the truth about the wrong thing.
@lpquagmire36212 ай бұрын
@@boseymcwhy "Marilyn was the great untouchable goddess of Hollywood that nobody dared to publicly say anything bad about." Not sure where you're getting your information from -- in Marilyn's day it was Liz Taylor Hollywood handled with kid gloves. Like many women in show business at the time, Marilyn was abused by studio executives and their casting couch, enduring everything from inappropriate sexual advances to the horrors of studio-mandated abortion. I recently treated myself to a big-screen showing of GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES and what struck me most was the economy of the camera work; much of Marilyn's song and dance numbers were accomplished in lengthy set-ups with very few camera cuts -- it takes a special talent to deliver under those conditions. Add to that, unlike many of her contemporaries, Marilyn did all her own singing, so bearing these things in mind I think Mr. Randall was wayyy off base in reducing Marilyn to someone with only an "ounce" of talent. She had her demons which often reflected in her professional work habits and I'm sure that lead to strained relationships on the set, but even Laurence Olivier had to admit she gave a wonderful performance in THE PRINCE AND THE SHOWGIRL, and they clashed constantly.

I really enjoyed this interview. I don't think SJR did her homework here and got a bit under Tony Randall's skin. He was a professionally trained actor who took his work seriously. She made a massive error when she conflated the person Tony Randall with the characters he plays and he didn't hold back. She also missed a huge opportunity with Marilyn Monroe and it would have been fascinating to hear his opinion. Marilyn knew her acting talent was limited. She was training and taking steps in a serious fashion to improve her skill sets at times. I would have liked to have heard his opinion about Marilyn's work with the Actors Studio and if it helped her acting.

Sorry, I think it was kind of cheap for him to say Marilyn didn't have any talent. He ended up coming off as a snob. Did he bother to come off his high horse and see "Niagara"? Or "River of No Return"? Not to mention other more well-known roles? I can be a *itch and assert that Randall was a nebbish in most of his roles and rarely was outside that small box.
