I mean that's part of being an actor. A lot of the Walking Dead actors are British but they all use American accents. Kevin McKidd is British (though I believe he does have an American citizenship as well), and he has played British, Scottish and American roles as well. To name a few.

For her it was probably more like taking on a heavy accent (American) than it was hiding the accent that's natural to her. But to answer your question ... unless she's very linguistically skilled, and it comes easily to her, I'm guessing she was coached on it.
