Your videos are an excellent resource for anyone wanting to understand and enjoy these two-part inventions, and this lesson on No. 13 is exceptionally good. There are piano teachers for all tastes on KZbin, but you succeed in combining a physical delight and intellectual appreciation of the music's structure, harmonies and melodies with historical and technical information that can help a learner make sense of the music. These inventions are a living treasure and have to be kept alive, so thank you for doing that.

I learned the right hand for this on the guitar a while back but your teaching has opened my eyes to a lot of possibilities. I'm fairly new to the piano and am simultaneously working on the Hanon Exercises to get my fingers better acquainted with the keyboard. "Danger of your fingers go and your mind doesn't know really what you are doing." Now that is a trap that takes longer to get out of than I can ever begin to imagine. Many years of bad habits take many years to change. Where was youtube in 1980? You're awesome!

@SallyChristianMusic
@SallyChristianMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Raul, thank you for your interesting and articulate comment! It is amazing how much more we can hear in a piece at a slower tempo. Bach, in particular, lends itself to a wide range of tempo choices, with each tempo revealing something different. In the fast and dense passages of Chopin, one can hear much more clearly the 4 different voices when practicing at a very slow tempo. Thank you for your insights, and best wishes to you!

I don't think anyone will read this but I would like to add a very simple simplification which she touches on but doesn't really expand on: The first section (after the intro of the chords A minor and E major - the tonic and harmonic fifth) then goes into a simple cadence through the seven chords by moving down in fifths (or up in fourths) which is classic of so much music (Autumn Leaves, Fly Me to the Moon, You Never Give Me Your Money - and many other pieces - especially by Bach). Then we end up in the C major section - but not really because after the little intro (C major - G7 again 5th and tonic) he immediately starts with the A minor - but this time the A minor is the beginning of the E minor cadence (if you can call it that) in which he goes down again through the circle of 5ths where you see that instead of D minor it's now D major and the G instead of being G7 is now G major 7 because it's all in the key of E minor, so the modulation is way up in the "supposed" C major section. Never mind the second page for now. That's just pure chromatic genius.
@SallyChristianMusic
@SallyChristianMusic 8 жыл бұрын
Hello Erik, and thank you for sharing your accurate analysis of the harmonic progressions within these sections. I look forward to hearing about the "chromatic genius" of page two when you have a chance. Best wishes to you!

Thank you, Mr. Berggren, for your astute comments. For me, as a player, the circle of 5ths is an old friend I go to often. There is just something about the emotional tension and expectation that moves me. And of course the resolve of the circle has an emotional component of its own--where one can feel the completeness of.....life. I have often been criticized for being unduly emotional with my views on music (and other forms of art). But as Aaron Copland used to say, the intellectual enjoyment of music is only one part, while the emotional part is indispensable.

@@SallyChristianMusic A real pleasure Sally. I do love how you describe Bach's musical language: "let yourself swing with this; this music is *happening* ...". You are so right, and you convey an exciting, contemporary sensibility to an otherwise rather dusty, fusty old didactic approach. Much of Bach's music revolves around dance, as you noted - much to the surprise of those who think of him in terms solely of musical mathematics. I love music, but I'll never really quite *get* how the emotional mechanics work at a technical level, but it is a real privilege to learn from you. Thank you very much.

Bach wrote these as practice pieces for his son, and other students. They were never intended to be performance pieces. The point of these pieces is to obtain better hand independence, and become proficient at playing 2 (inventions) or 3 (sinfonias) voices, and in a smooth singing style. There are no tempo markings, and since they were written for harpsichord mainly, they have no dynamic markings either. So in theory, once you've mastered the piece by playing it in a song like manner, in 2 or 3 clear voices, with correct fingering, and correct counting, you can play it however fast or slow, or loud or soft you want. The rest is up to the artist and their interpretation.

I play this piece all the time and while I can play it fast, in my opinion their is such a thing as ‘too fast’. Some people play it waaaay too fast for my taste. This is the them for the old Commodore 64 commercials and i like the tempo they use there.

Thanks for your videos, love that you play each piece at the end with your own interpretation. I'm doing my best to keep up with all of the technical details. Hi, Brent, I would say that it is similar to how we speak; our voices often change inflection as we near the end of a sentence, or our pacing may change slightly to indicate that we have come to the end of that thought. The shaping of musical phrases is very similar to how we punctuate in speaking. I hope this is helpful.

Hi Sally, I enjoy your channel so much!! Thank you for making these awesome videos, really appreciated especially the way you analyze the music pieces. Not only it's great for practicing, but REALLY helps me to see the patterns in them. Hello Mengdan, and thank you for your very nice words, including mentioning my vocabulary! I really appreciate hearing that the analysis of these pieces is helping you to see the patterns. It is exciting for me, too, to uncover the supporting structures for each piece. As you might know, I just recently uploaded the 13 teaching videos for the complete Rachmaninoff Preludes, Opus 32. I am now in the middle of preparations for the next project, and expect that it will be several more months before anything new will be uploaded. Regarding the Bach Prelude & Fugue in A minor, BWV 543 for organ, I will put this Liszt transcription in the "to be considered" queue! Best wishes to you!

Would you be willing to produce a layout chart for Rachmaninoff's Opus 23 No. 10 Prelude in G flat major? In perusing your web store front I saw that you had pretty much worked through all of the Op. 32 set. No. 13 is my favorite of those. But, I also adore Op. 23 No. 10.

Hello Mark, and thank you for your request to make a chart for this exquisite Prelude in G flat Major. This is one of my very favorites from the Opus 23. Completing the charts and teaching videos for the 13 Preludes Opus 32 has taken years, and I anticipate the same thing would be true for the Opus 23. Dear Madam, yes you do a great job, I really do agree with all the others, but: I by myself have got a totally different view on this piece which is one of my favorits. I recently performed it before an audience of important people (to me), and if I had known your point of view before, I would have been a bit discouraged, because: To me this piece seems so much more tender and soft and I like to play it more slowly (as the final version, not practice!), except the end, that can be seen as virtuous, dark and perhaps a little furious, but nevertheless not that hard. - Is there a right and a wrong? Am I totally wrong? I'm not sure now! -- Anyhow, the way you play and explain it matches perfectly your personality! Chapeau to your stile!

Deear Thomas, thank you so much for your kind and appreciated comment! You ask an excellent question. Over the years of studying, performing, and making Bach teaching videos, I have come to think that there is a wide range of possible interpretations that are valid. I also have found that my own interpretations can and do change considerably over the years. There is not one right or wrong way as long as the playing is accurate, cohesive, and consistent within the decided upon character and phrasings. Sometimes I will practice a piece at a much slower tempo, and find that this could also be a valid interpretation of the piece. I hope this helps, and I wish you the very best with your playing! 🎵

great! thank you! how about a video of harmonic analysis? some of it is not very difficult, but towards the end, help will be greatly appreciated! structurally, beginning of "page 2" could insert here the 4 opening bars on e minor, as typical to italian concerto technique. He just skips it, seems to me, to intensify the movement.

Hello Eli, thank you for your kind & appreciated words about this lesson! I agree, page 2 begins a marked difference in the piece, following the structure of binary form. It certainly does intensify and develop the movement wonderfully! Best wishes to you. 🎵

Hello, thank you for your comment and your very good question. I have always felt that it is essential to at least "like" the piece one is working on. If you don't resonate with the music, it is very difficult to play it really well, not to speak of all the hours it takes just to learn the piece. I recommend that if you are required to play a certain work for whatever reason, you should have some input in the selection process. Perhaps there is another piece that would be acceptable in place of the one you don't really like? If this piece is a set repertoire requirement, is it necessary for you to participate? Would there be another approach for you and your teacher that would make the experience more satisfying for everyone concerned? I wish you well with this, and I do understand your dilemma.

Hello CoinPro, thank you for your question. This is really up to the performer to decide, as Bach gave no tempo indications or dynamic markings. You will hear a range of tempo choices and styles when listening to recordings of well respected interpreters of Bach. The tempo in this lesson is just one possible way of playing the piece.

@SallyChristianMusic
@SallyChristianMusic 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Weldon, thank you for your question. It was common performance practice in the Baroque period to add ornaments and trills. You can add them (with discretion) when you want to emphasize a note, or give it a little more color. I recommend listening to some of the recordings of the great Bach players to give you some good examples of how and where to add them. Best wishes to you!
