His attacker was a 24 year-old man living in his mother's basement with no job, no education, no personal ambitions, no motivation, and no aspirations. His only identity was his religion and here was Salman Rushdie, an atheist, a brilliant author, highly educated, highly successful, who had everything. What would be the simplest and easiest way to get instant fame and notoriety, and approval from the fanatics in his religion? By killing the man that they hated and who he was jealous of. It was as simple as that. "The religious crazies that I idolize hate him and so to win their approval, I must throw away my life and kill him." Brilliant self-analysis, guy. That's as far as his dumbass thinking went. I feel sorry for his family; but I hope he spends the rest of his life in prison.

I am reading Knife right now. Iti is a highly intimate and personal book. Mr. Rushdie takes us right into the innermost sanctum of his life, which is a very brave thing to do. It is the second book by Mr. Rushdie that I am reading. The first was Satanic Verses. I found nothing in that book that was cause to call for anyone's murder. It was a wonderful, dreamlike fantastical book which I found challenging but rewarding. I am quite certain that Ayatollah Khomeini, nor the man who attacked Mr. Rushdie, ever bothered to read any of his books. I would like Mr. Rushdie to know that I admire his courage, his artistry and creativity so much. I am going to read Midnight's Children next as I hear it is very good. I am from Canada. I wish Mr. Rushdie a long and healthy life moving forward. I am sorry these terrible things have happened to you. But as your preface says, We are other, no longer what we were before the calamity of yesterday.

I'm confused, what happened beforehand for such a severe attack to have occurred here? Why did it happen, and what did the author do to deserve such an attack in the first place????
@lesliewells-ig5dl5 ай бұрын
He didn't deserve it, of course! Back in the 80s, he wrote a novel that offended the Ayatolla in Iran and he issued a fatwa, which is an order of execution. The book offended a lot of extremists of Islam. And the fatwa gave permission encouragement to any Muslim to kill him. He lived in hiding for over 10 years, with 24/7 security from Scotland Yard. Eventually England and Iran came to some ki d of agreement and they called off the assassination plots. But they never rescinded the fatwa, so crazy people like this kid who wasn't even born then can still act on it. Rushdie has lived in the US for about 20 years now and was safe u til this happened. What he did is write a work of fiction that offended some people. That's what he did.

Can We India not reclaim Salman Rushdie
@raconteurhermit15332 ай бұрын
British during their colonial rule over India had to draft new laws (153A,295A ) to control such brutal killings of blasphemers by Muslims after the murder of a publisher Mahashay Dharmpal. Muslims have used these laws for preventing every public discussion of their creed in general & of their prophet in particular. This is an old pattern inherent to Islam ,Deoband organized special recitations of the holy book for honoring the murderer of Hindu spiritual leader Swami Shardhanand. Little did they expect that same provisions of the law could be invoked for seeking a ban on their holy book The Quran. In 1985,credit for this turning of tables goes to a Calcutta resident (Chandmal Chopra who was a refugee of Hindu genocide in Bangladesh partition of India 1947). Writ petition filed in the Calcutta High court in 1985 stating that publication of Quran attracts IPC 153A 295A because "it incites violence, disturbs public tranquility, promotes on ground of religion feelings of enmity hatred and ill will between different religious communities"

Rushdie is wrong, as usual, about many things. Since the start of his career he comes across as a man of quite limited intelligence both with regards to the purposes of literature and the world of real politk. While nothing justifies an attack on his person nevertheless the stupidity of his opinions on Gaza and other topics illustrates that he is extremely accident prone largely because he is fundamentally flawed as an honest broker on many of the most important issues of the day.

@wafaabdullah21723 ай бұрын
@Textual-Produce Thank you for your kind observations. No doubt Rushdie has supporters who despise religions such as Christianity and Islam and will therefore reward him with money and fame. It's how things are in the West. However, Islam and Christianity are not going to magically disappear or become maligned by a poisoned pen. On the contrary it seems that this mockery is really only meant for an increasingly slender audience. Real politik assumes at least a minimal understanding of the extraterritoriality of both religions.
