southernfrugal.com Salmon patties that taste like crab cakes. Easy and very inexpensive to make.
Lemon juice should be- juice of one lemon, sorry I misspoke on the video. Can of pink salmon $2.89, four servings.

I know that Phyllis has gone to be with the Lord, but I still leave comments on her videos in case it affects the algorithm for the channel in a positive way. And of course I know that Stephen is monitoring things, too, but I don’t really expect him to see all of the comments on his mom’s videos. Anyway, watching Phyllis is just so entertaining and relaxing-even rewatching the same videos. 💜💜💜

Hi Miss Phyllis; I have to make a comment on your Salmon patties. My husband is not fond of Salmon. He says, "it stinks." He does take some if it is mixed such as in a salad. When I placed the fried patties, made according to you, in front of him, he took one bite and could not stop eating. He ate 5 small patties while mumbling, "This is gooooood". Now, I hear every day, "Flory darling, when are you going to make Phyllis's Salmon patties again?". Thanks Phyllis, one more way to get to a man's heart. Florinda.

Hi Florinda, So glad he liked the salmon patties. I have to agree with your husband - I'm not fond of salmon either but I love them fixed like this. To me they taste exactly like crab cakes we get at the beach, I can even eat them cold on a salad. Thanks so much for making a comment.

When I make them I just use an egg to bind them then dredge them in flour, but growing up my Mom dredged them in cornmeal. Also, not to gross you out, but I eat the skin and bones, and sometimes take a sip of the briney juice! 🤗 I told a friend that and she was totally grossed out. Funny thing is I don’t care much for fresh salmon.

Hello! I must say, this looks excellent! You are the first one , that I have found, who has drained, cleaned, and saved the juice like I do for my pets, or to use in other cooking, like tuna/salmon casserole!, plus I am a Big Horseradish consumer, so this is wonderful! I love hot pepper also, so for myself, I will add finely minced fresh thai chillies, or jalapeno, maybe even a scotch bonnet, other than that, Perfect!, thank you!

Phyllis, the broth makes an excellent chowder. Add an equal amount of milk, a tsp butter and an optional 1/8 tsp onion powder. Heat that all up and break up 1/2 a crisp, hot salmon cake into it and you have a single serving of soup! I get 6 patties from a can and I coat with bread crumbs before I bake them in an oil coated jelly roll pan at 400 degrees for 10 min then flip and bake 10 min more until browned. I usually bake them in a convection/toaster oven. I have to remove the backbones I don't mind the tiny ribs.

Hi Miss Phillis, just found your site for the first time. I was searching for a new salmon patty recipe. Watched your video & thought that while you don't particularly care for salmon, one addition you might try is one cup prepared mashed potatoes , either fresh or boxed, and omit the egg. The potatoes are a wonderful binder and they make the patties light and delicate but hold their shapes perfectly while cooking. Glad to Meet you & will be perusing your site more often

Hello Mrs. Stokes, Just to clarify , after your patties are formed then you dip them into the remaining bread crumbs before frying? How long per side do you fry them? Can all purpose flour be used instead of self rising flour? Thanks so much for this recipe! I'm originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and out there we've got salmon coming out our ears. Love your ideas and information! Thanks again

Back in the 50s it wasn't expensive as it is now, and we being Catholic , were not to eat meat on Fridays; so we got salmon patties !! I ate them as a child, but didn't like them then, and being a adult, I don't choose to eat them .. I still watch Your video because I really enjoy You !! Dear Mrs. Phyllis ! I love watching all your you tube recipe creations !...this dinner looked especially delicious to me ...I live in Canada and we get frozen salmon ...we don't get canned one so I imagine I could use frozen salmon ...and use it as a replacement for the canned salmon ?...it has no skin ...when we buy the salmon steaks frozen so it wouldn't taste too fishy ...also we don't have the bay spice !...can I replace the baby leaves in the water while poaching the salmon or do I have to send for the bay spice from the United States to get the proper taste? I really want to try this recipe! Thank you for sharing!🌸
@PhyllisStokes
@PhyllisStokes 7 жыл бұрын
You could order Old Bay from Amazon but back to the question should you use bay leaves in the water while poaching the salmon - Yes. If I had fresh frozen salmon I would just go ahead and make the patties with everything except the spices and see how it taste. The spices are what makes it taste like southern crab cakes.

I usually like salmon cakes but the last time I made them they were extremely fishy which I hadn't had that experience before. Yours sound really good & I will definitely take the skin off. I just hope they aren't too salty. That has been the experience I've had in restaurants with crab cakes which I would like but they are always too salty. To my opinion, everything seems to be terribly high in sodium these days. Is it just me????

Hi! About how long do you cook on each side? Could you (I) brown on each side and finish in the oven? I think I'm gonna add a bit of jalapeno to mine! ;) Thanks so much!!
@PhyllisStokes
@PhyllisStokes 7 жыл бұрын
Jalapeno would give the salmon patties a little kick. It's hard to judge how long on each side but let me guess at it this way, have your burner on medium heat with oil hot when you see the edges getting brown flip them over and let the other side get brown. No need to finish in the oven because they cook pretty quick.

My family, all except for my husband, loves my salmon patties. I think the reason my hubby doesn't like them very well (but he always eats them anyway ) is because I have always left the skin and bones in. As a kid I always loved crunching into a bone, especially a round one. Yes, I must have been a weird kid. I think taking out the skin and bones is why yours has a milder taste to be more like crab cakes.
