hey i have a question, when you caught that big boy in the beginning of your video, how did you get him to the bank, it looks like you just walked towards him slowly pushing him to the bank, is that how its done or do you have to fight them like any other fishing scenario?
@jagfishing836

Heres the deal it was a lot of luck.... 1- the water levels were extremely low for weeks so the salmon had to work harder to get through. 2- that day was avout 85 degrees and few days before that were about the same. By the time that fish got to me it was already tired so didnt have much of a fight........ now if it was 60degrees and water flow was average..... it would've been like hooking into a freight train

I fish the Salmon river every year. Best time to fish the run is about the Sept 25 to Oct 12. I have friends that contact me when fish are running. Cohoes normally fun first then the Kings. This yr the water level is low running about 180 GPM. Last yr was a little tough the run was short. I hooked up about 40 to 50 fish in my 11 day trip. Here is an important thing to know..Do not put a large bait on the hook. If you are using sponge just a tiny piece. Remember if the bait is to big and the barb is covered you will have a hard time hooking up. Your rod must have some back bone..I have seen many rods break when a good fish is hooked. Just a few tips for the run. Oh yeah if you hook up let everyone know you have a fish on..By yelling " Fishon" this way the other ppl will reel their line in. Hope this helps and see you on the river.

Depends bro I've experienced the kings run first and then tho Coho's followed by the steels to eat the eggs and hold over, with the browns spawning and gorging but the 25th the oct 12th is prime bro the staircase and the north south trestle are the shit. Gonna be up there Oct 15th hope more steels will be in at a later date in my hopes lol

Going up for my first time this week. Bringing my offshore 7’6” medium heavy and a really nice 4000 series reel. It’s got like 20 lbs braid on it and I was going to use 12 lbs flouro leader. Will that be enough? Also any specific etiquette on harvesting and holding onto fish? I need more tips!! Hah

Good info for those beginners that venture up for the 1st time. Especially being told from someone who is basically a beginner yourself. It helps people gain confidence that it's possible. Fyi, fly fishermen would agree that, with good polarized glasses you can see the salmon go for their flies and egg patterns. Fish need to eat no matter what their goals! Fish-On!

Haters will hate. I bet some of the comments calling you out HAVE caught them the same way. You are catching them by the mouth, don’t care how you are catching them by the mouth and you have evidence of catching them by the mouth. Great explanation, we don’t have that style of salmon here but then again in Colorado they allow snagging of kokes here. Different states different rules you explained.

Good video brother. I have been fishing up there for 6 years now, and have watched a lot of different techniques from guys on the water. 1st year up was had no idea what we were doing. Spent rough $60 in bait that we were told was hot. After the first 3 hour of work and 1 salmon between 3 guys. I started watching some of the more experienced guys catching fish. A couple were nice enough to explain to us the flossing technique. Never looked back. And I do believe there is a right and wrong way to use it, and you showed it perfectly. See you in a couple of weeks.

Same exact experience for me, and that was my intention for this video. I just want to help beginners understand the technique. I also understand that its controversial but if you do it right and not set the hook until you actually floss the fish.... the chances of snagging it anywhere on the body become quite small. But i still have so much hate on this video haha 🤷‍♂️

Little late on commenting, but you are right, the flossing technique is a very good way to catch/land salmon on the salmon river. A lot of people hate flossers, but truly its the way to do it on the salmon river on a lot of parts, like true north angler said in his comment, salmon hit out of aggression, they don't eat in the river they hit out of aggression. Great video, and good luck this salmon season, hoping to see a video on the salmon river this year. Like a lot of other species of fish during their spawn, they hit out of aggression, not to eat.

Hi Jag. For us here in Ontario, flossing is considered snagging. Lol. I generally don’t target salmon while they are in the rivers especially in low clear water where you can see them. I enjoy fishing for them at the river mouths where they hit all kinds of lures. I do agree with you, the salmon usually hit out of aggression especially in rivers where they protect their spawning area. Great tips and tricks Jag. Thanks for explaining the regs as well. 👍

Jag Fishing You don’t even need a boat, Jag. Get yourself a medium action rod, about 10 ft in length, spoil up 20 lb braid on a bigger sized reel and go fish the piers and river mouths around where the salmon enter the rivers. I do very well at night fishing glow in the dark spoons as well as crankbaits during the day when they start staging in numbers. It is so much fun when they peel out your line and fight in open water. Try it, you won’t regret it. I also have friends who fish with me from their kayaks close to shore casting for them. I have a few videos from last year salmon fishing the piers and from my pontoon boat and what I use. Hope you try it, it is fun.

Flossing is highly frowned upon here in Oregon too, unless you’re dancing. Not considered snagging and it is legal, but you will get an ear full. We tend to stick to eggs, beads, or spinners in the rivers. Good info though bro 👍

Heavy sport fishing pressure makes Salmon learn quick what is real and what's fake. So flys, spoons, spinners and other hardware are ignored and easily avoided by the fish. You sling out a single translucent fish egg with long leader and apply an aggressive retrieval at the end of your drift and repeat a thousand times.... viola fish on! Not very sportsman like.

When you tie your main line to the barrel swivel, leave a tag line of about 3 inches long and when or if you get a snag the weights will slid off that tag line instead of breaking off your whole set up. Its easier to replace you split shot than your entire leader and swivel.

It gets complicated to play it safe on the river but over all its simply the right size hook, leader no longer than 48" and if not caught in the mouth release immediately. If you look up DEC regs they have a section for lake ontario and its tributaries

Coworker and I heading down to fish the salmon River columbus day weekend. We have a couple questions, what size/type of hooks and what size swivels? We will be using flyrods. Most of this is familiar to me. I lived in Alaska for around 15yrs and fished salmon every summer I lived there. This is the same technique used in AK as well. In my opinion the only salmon species that truly is aggressive and bites on artificial and live bait are cohos they are a blast to catch!! But we are targeting kings for this trip..Informative video..maybe we will see you around in October.
@jagfishing836
@jagfishing836 3 жыл бұрын
I like to go with size 2 octopus hook. Bring lots of hooks and make sure theyre always sharp. I use regular barrel swivels, a lot of ppl go with 50lb and that is more than sufficient in my opinion.... alaska is a dream destination for me, definitely a place i want to fish before i kick the bucket! Haha best of luck to you on the trip, maybe we will run into eachother on the river. Tight lines!!

Newbie fly fisherman here. Most leaders are 9ft, so where can I find some 4ft long leaders? Or do I just cut my current leader down from 9 to 4? Any recommendations?
@jagfishing836
@jagfishing836 3 жыл бұрын
I would cut it down to 4 foot. DEC doesnt specify anything different for fly. All it says in the regs is 48" leader. If you contact fat nancys tackle shop in pulaski im sure they can provide you with info and the appropriate and legal gear
@greghinderliter
@greghinderliter 2 жыл бұрын
have your regular leader, ya..... then put a small barrel swivel on that, then tie 4 feet of tippet on that. what the rules are saying is, don't put a swivel or weight on the last 4 feet of your line. think about it, a spin fisherman has a spool of line 200 yards long, what fly fisherman calls a leader isn't what a spin fisherman thinks of what a leader is. the leader to a spin fisherman is the 4 feet of smaller line

@jagfishing836
@jagfishing836 3 жыл бұрын
You can go crazy on salmon equipment but you will do just fine with a medium/heavy rod at least a 6'6" i would recommend. I like tonuse my ugly stick gx2 setup because its affordable, get the job done and if you get a huge fresh fish and it breaks the rod youre not 200 bucks down the drain lol. I would use around 12-15 pound main line and 8-10 pound leader. And as for hooks i like tonuse #2 octopus hook.... just make sure youre within the legal tackle which i mentioned in the video. Also a great spot to get hooked up with the right gear is a store called fat nancys right in pulaski

Hey there, thanks so much for providing a starter with your informative video! I have a question and realize the video is older, however, maybe you or someone else scrolling along canbe able to answer. Can you use lead splits or do they have to be tin? Thanks for any help in this question!
@jagfishing836
@jagfishing836 Жыл бұрын
This is from DEC website: New York State passed legislation that will prohibit the sale of certain lead sinkers. Beginning in May 2004, the sale of lead fishing sinkers (including "split shot") weighing one-half ounce or less will not be permitted...... however, i cannot find anything that says using them is illegal or prohibited. Now when it comes to the two types i see lots of people prefer lead. The reason being is that lead looks more natural(like a rock) and not shiny like tin so the fish wont spook as easily. That being said, its a gray area. Play it how you feel fit. Thabk you for watching the video and hope it helped out a little! Tight lines!
