I've used Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX boots in cold temperatures like -20 to -30 degrees Celsius with some merino wool socks and had no problems with them hiking around for hours in deep snow. Loved them, had them for 6 years before I had to throw them out because they were sooo badly worn out. Best boots I've ever had. :) Planning to get a new pair of Quest 4 GTX:s soon.

I found throwing away the insole and replacing with a better one made the boots much more comfortable. Great review. 👍

Got my gtx4d today and must admit they more comfortable,I didn't think they could be better than previous model but hey Salmon have outdone themselves with this upgrade. The remarkable thing is I paid less for them than previous model by pure luck I guess as they're RRP is rather dear and almost 50% off Sale is brilliant.

I had to replace my Meindl Air Revolution boots. These boots were heavy approx. 32 oz, but you had the feeling, the boots are walking alone with you and I loved them. On my wishlist for new boots were the Salomon Quest 4D 3 GTX, because I read in a magazine that these boots are the best hiking boots ever. On a price search engine I found them for 139 € (approx. $ 144) and I have ordered them at once, but then I realized, that I ordered the Salomon Quest 4 GTX and I wanted to cancel my order. Before canceling I found this video and I was surprised, that in Germany the new Salomon Quest 4 GTX are cheaper the the older ones Salomon 4D 3 GTX (approx. $ 176). After watching this video I will not cancel my order.

I've worn my Quest 4D 3gtx to destruction. Right down to the carbon fiber insole. I'm looking to buy another pair but noticed in your video the 4GTX doesn't seem to have the carbon fiber anymore unless they have just totally altered its appearance. Could you confirm if they have removed the carbon fiber or not please before I make my decision between the two. Woukd be very much appreciated.

Love your videos.. Question.. Have you done a comparison between the X Ultra 4 mid and the Quest 4d ?? I wear a 11.5 to 12 wide in most shoes and need a good work hiker for wet conditions

I've just bought these boots while on a 5 month trip up Scotland and went up Ben Nevis in them and I could feel every little stone through the soles which I found very annoying, not good at all. My Scarpa leather boots have a much better sole and are cheaper.

If you want them for light weight hiking, I'd definitely go with the X Ultra, they are super light while great on any kind of terrain. If you plan on heavy back packing, I'd get the 4D Quest, they are a lot sturdier and give perfect support on whatever terrain. Both are super comfy right out of the box.

This video is great. I'm really struggling with which boots to buy, but have also found Salomon quest element which are really confusing me, and I've found no reviews. Do you know anything about them? They look just like a normal quest 4, not sure what the difference is?!

I have a pair and they are really nice. It is comfortable and has all the “element”s (pun intended) of the quest 4 it is light. I got them to start hiking but mostly in lower elevations and wet northern weather of rain and wet runoff trails. NO regrets at all with them. For me it was a great choice. But then i am not backpacking for any of my trips just day outings. The ADC band is not as thick, a bit more subtle.

@@simonk337 good luck. You are right the verdict is still out on how long the element will lasts. But I think all light boots will have less lifespan then full leather resolable boots. Trade offs. I hope you find the ones that are perfect for you!

@@nelku5608 I'm a beginner hiker as well and ended up getting the Ultra X 3's! I didn't go with the Quests because they seem like a more serious and heavy boot for people who carry heavy loads. I just needed a good boot with good support on moderate trails with lots of rock scrambling (NY upstate). Do you feel like your elements are overkill for your hiking?
