Thanks Jeff and yes! The next day I had to hike back up about 900m (very slowly) and shoot drone footage, was out 6hours. Actually used two drone the FPV for those more dynamic shots and then the Mini 3 Pro for some other shots. Earlier in the week I shot drone in the valley on the far side as well as the drone footage of the first big descent. So much for a rest before a race 🤣 You ever run in Scotland or Ireland? At least 20hours in the edit 😴 There's a lot of footage I had to cut as well as it was just going to be too long, could easily have been over 20-25mins. I sometimes start my colour grading by removing all the colour and just starting with the contrast and then add the colour back in. Winter is definitely coming, I can feel a chill in the air now. Thanks so much for becoming a channel member! Means a lot to have people supporting the channel 🙂 Make sure and have a look back over some of the members only videos. Hey Steve, have you ever considered running with poles, definitely help with the climbs (and the downs) as well as stream crossing etc. Might save your ankle :) I know it's difficult though juggling the GoPro with poles however.
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid 2 жыл бұрын
I sometimes use poles when I’m getting back into training so I can do more miles. Also often use them when I’m carrying packs if I’m fast packing or camping to try and save my knees. But never raced with them, they making filming very tricky at the same time. Interestingly very few runners in Ireland seem to use them at all. Especially in non-ultra length races. Interestingly the winner of the Ben Nevis ultra wasn’t using poles. Dunno how his knees are in one piece!

@StephenJReid

Hmm good question. I was more exhausted at the end of this than I was at Skyline, didn't even want talk to anyone. I think the battering from the wet and cold played a part in that. Terrain is more difficult, there's no real scrambling in the Mournes or narrow ridges. This felt more dangerous. Although I think maybe I enjoyed it more. Another really good video, The mix between the landscape perspective and the up-close competition really tells the story well. In the video you do not speak to the competitive side but I have to ask, How do you run, and record all that b-roll in the same race? I would think you would be crossing the finish line well after dark. Also the mix between the GoPro footage and the insta360 One x2 is really good. That 360 really gives an additional perspective that the GoPro could not get. I go for a walk in my neighborhood (think concrete) with camera and then watch your opus and I am embarrassed. lol

Thanks! For me in a race like this for the first time I don't have any other goal other than to give a solid effort and finish. So my focus is on making the best video I can while still steady pushing. I finished in 7:22, which was 488 out of 749, so happy with that. The last runners did finish in the dark at nearly 11hours, although they had been officially timed out at that stage. If I did it again I would be chasing a better time and would be a bit more competitive. The drone footage was either shot in advance or the following day where I hiked back up again! During the race I have to decide what I will and won't shoot and which camera will be best for it. Remember out of a 7+ hour race you only got to actually see about 15mins of it. Been making running videos for 4years now so I've gotten better at balancing it all. Takes time.

Great videoography, compelling stories as always! Loved it and want to this event myself now! You really captured the essence of mid race misery there. The point at which you want to give up but can't because no one is evacing you from the mountain! I noticed you roll your ankle if any video that involves running, not teaching you to suck eggs, but did you ever consider a lightweight boot like an inov8 or la sportive?
@StephenJReid
@StephenJReid 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Rob! Haha yeah I could hear a helicopter in the distance in the worst parts of the race and was hoping it would come pick me up! I have a permanently weakened left ankle from snapped a couple of ligaments in it about 3years ago. So that’s left it prone to rolling. My physios advice was my best option is to do strengthening exercises. Which of course I have mostly ignored to my detriment. I’m really bad at habit forming. It’s actually only really been this last year that I’ve been rolling my ankle during actual races. I just need to get back to doing those exercises. I have considered a more supportive shoe, but I’d treat it as cure
