Nice review… Every-time I watch a review about Salomon Ultra-Glide or other similar running shoes that people complain about width, no one actually gives out measurements. It’s too subjective to say wide or not wide enough without giving any reference or comparison point. I normally wear men size 11 and decided to measure the width of my right-stronger foot which is 4-1/4”. I ran with Salomon Speed Cross 4 for several years, they fit to size (11). They felt snug but comfortable. The Ultra-Glide fit me half size down (10.5), they feel snug as well in the width but I have no problem running with Ultra Glide. Thought giving actual measurement could help others on the fence and not knowing if UG would fit them in width.

Thanks. I hear what you are saying - the only issue is the width or space again is so varied as sometimes it can be the overlays not the width that restricts space or others the shallow toe box. But a standard measurement would be a good idea 👍
@communicationiskey-2 жыл бұрын
Just for giggles, what is the width of your stronger foot? Just place a piece of paper under you foot, mark each side of the widest part then measure…

Good review, thanks for the update, definitely agree on a really good lockdown. It’s weird hearing people on midsole flattening, the insole went a bit flat but makes no difference. The midsole is great so responsive and soft still and I’ve done 140 miles in them so far.

How many km’s do you have on yours now? It’s annoying seeing so many people complain about midsole flattening. I just bought a pair hoping they’ll last 500km, which I’d be happy with

Yup, do. I really wanted to them to work - but unfortunately…. Just not wide enough. Been back solely in Altra (the lone peak etc ) over the last 5/6 weeks and feel great. My heel pain / PF has gone too…

I feel lucky to have average width feet after seeing how often you encounter shoes that aren't quite wide enough. Sounds like these are good for runs on the trails that aren't too long. Good review mate 👍🏻🏃♂️

Agree with pretty much all of this, I’ve never considered myself to have wide feet, they’re also “low volume” as I always have to tie laces tight for a lockdown. I’ve had these shoes just over a month now and am pretty frustrated, the overlays are so harsh where the upper joins midsole that with the very narrow mid foot on these they destroy my instep just back from the ball of my foot, can’t do any more than 6 miles. The lace garage isn’t that difficult to figure out, yes a bit of a faff at first but more annoyingly the stitching is fraying on mine after only a few uses. As I said frustrated because they are super lightweight, ride is firm but fun with a lighter stride, and lockdown is excellent but just don’t want to put them on my feet for anything other than a short jog. For now these have been relegated to dog walking shoes to try and soften the upper, not what I wanted from a £130 shoe....
@movemorenowjames3 жыл бұрын
I too have found that I can’t really wear this one anymore either … shame … it’s just a little too narrow and as said, the overlays too restrictive. Thanks for the feedback
@christiansarginson7803 жыл бұрын
No worries, watched a few of your reviews before I bought a few pairs, just a shame this one wasn’t out at the time! Think a lot of reviewers initially got carried away with Salomon’s “wider toe box” press release and now starting to realise they’re just as narrow in the rest of the foot as others. Interested to hear what you think of the speedgoat wide version if you’ve tried those? Are they any better? They were sold out everywhere at the time I bought these but still keen to try.

@@christiansarginson780 have had 2 pairs of SG wide , great shoe but I found the upper to be a little scratchy and harsh at times plus I have been gravitating towards more ground feel and lower stack , I now find it almost too much cushion and a disconnect from the trails. I have a done vids on the SG. Recently gone back to my roots, using Altra , really enjoying the superior 4.5 for it’s ground feel and spacious upper … Yes, completely agree - we all got too carried away with the hype of the Ultra glide.
@christiansarginson7803 жыл бұрын
Awesome thanks, will find the SG vids, as with everything I guess there’s no substitute for getting them on your feet, especially as I now feel like mine are an odd shape!! I bought some Saucony Xodus 11s when I got fed up of the UGs (and Hoka Challenger wides felt like boats) as I run in Saucony road shoes and know they fit. The Xodus are pretty much the opposite of what you’re going back to; loads of cushion and a pretty chunky shoe but have been seriously impressed with comfort, cushioning and build quality, hardly any reviews on that shoe too. Then again I’m a 10k plodder unlike you machines! Anyways keep up the good work, really appreciate you taking the time to respond.

@@movemorenowjames I have found these to be an absolute joy. I have struggled for years to find shoes narrow enough and with a low enough volume. I hear raving reviews about Hoka shoes and would love to go that route but they are way to wide and unstable on my feet. I use the Salomon SenseRide 4 for tech trails and the Ultra Glide for road to trail and longer smoother trail runs and ultra distance efforts. They just work.

After about 150 miles my sense ride 4's feel like running in one of those tuxedo rental shoes. I never really got along with the fit, of the salomon, but it's still a real bummer because the grip and build quality of the shoe are great, there's a ton of life left in those areas, but the mid sole renders the shoe unusable even just for hiking. All of that being said, I did just order a pair of timp 2's (I know they are famous for prematurely falling apart). I figure at their clearance price and with altras 4-500 mile guaranty, I'd give them a shot as I need to replace that slot in my trail rotation as well as putting a zero drop shoe in there as well.
@movemorenowjames3 жыл бұрын
Love the Timp but yes, durability issues…. Thanks for the feedback re the UG. Shame. It’s a great shoe but clearly not so great if it packs up after 150 , especially to a tux shoe ! 👍

Love this shoe, but I don’t have a wide foot and i just look forward to running in it at every opportunity. Only 68 miles in mine and feels as responsive as ever. I do worry about it flattening out, as I do run road to trail but loads to love ..comfy, responsive, cushioned and light with a great outsole. Not tried the Nikes as I’ve heard they don’t grip but may add a wild horse or trail 3 to save my Ultra Glide, until I switched to the Peregrine in the wet.

Thanks Micheal, great feedback … as you don’t have wide feet I think you will like the peregrine, quite similar… 👍

All you have to do is pull on the tab on the pocket before cinching down on the laces honestly no issues with this lacing storage. Was worries because this wasn’t the first time I heard this but once I laced up I had no issues since it has that pull tab.

For me I enjoy the cushioning and the fit of the toe box. I would prefer less cushioning on the tongue and heel. It's a good road to hard pack trail shoe but I prefer other shoes for softer and more technical trails.

I have only tried it on once in a shop but that was enough to turn me off. I had this one on one foot and the Asics Trabuco Max on the other. It might be Salomon-soft, but it is not my type of soft. Bit of a bummer actually as I was hoping for a competitor to Speedgoat and Evo Mafate
@movemorenowjames3 жыл бұрын
….might not help, but it does also break in a little - get a little softer after a run or two. That said, it’s not Hoka soft no, haven’t tried the trabuco… Thanks for the feedback Erik.

I have had problems with this shoe holding on to too much water! It becomes SO heavy and doesn't drain at all. Maybe OK for western trails but not for running through streams or in humid conditions. It was like running in a bathtub of water!

It's marketed as an 'Ultra' shoe so that's how I judge it. I have normal width feet. For me, it doesn't feel ventilated enough or wide enough for a 50 miler +. It feels a bit overpadded on top and while you can loosen the shoe across the forefoot, the heel doesn't provide great lock down. Fewer overlays and a couple of millimetres more width in v2 please!

Hi, nice review. I was thinking of buying these shoes to walk the Camino Del Norte in Spain 865km over 35 days or so. It is like 75% paved roads. Because of the cushioning, is the main reason for getting these, because i won't be running in them. What other trail runner would you recommend that has great cushioning?
@movemorenowjames2 жыл бұрын
The Hoka speedgoat (wide for me) works well, great grip and lots of cushion or .. my favourite is the brand Altra - which zero drop so takes some time to get used to but feels great once there. The Timp and Olympus are both packed with cushion too… The ultra glides are just a little too narrow for me. Especially when your foot swells after running / walking for 2+ hours …
