Some reasonable tests there Nic. I find one of the best tests for waterproofing is definitely a large field with long dew laden grass. A good mile or so will indicate quality. Well, good going. All the best. Mark

Oh yeah, the drippage from above is often where the worst of it comes from eh? I took these to Finland too and the only time I got them wet was melting snow from above when I stepped in 4 foot snowdrift 😂

@@NicksTravelAdventures Yeah, there is the above Nic but I meant grass covered in dew really does make the boots sodden all round. It's a good test. Have a cool evening.

Well, I bought the Salomon X Ultra 4 mid GTX 6 months ago to replace my old Salomon X Ultra (1) mid GTX. With the former I completed about 3000 km of hiking trails, including a Camino de Santiago ( St. Jacques Way), from Saint Jean Pied du Port to Santiago de Compostela (800 km). I have now used the new boot, the X Ultra 4, to train for and complete the Via Podienses (GR 65) in France, from Le Puy en Velay to Roncesvalles, completing about 1000 km of hiking. The new boot is lighter and perhaps a little more confortable than the old one, but, and to me that is a huge BUT, if you compare the soles of the two boots, I tell you, the old one with 3000 k is in much better shape than the new one, with one third of the distance. If you look only at the sole of old one , you will think that it belongs to the newer boot. So I have huge doubts if the weight saved is worth the diminished endurance of the boot.

So it has worn out after only 6 months? Something for Salomon to consider for future iterations.
@claudioluizlamego8467 Жыл бұрын
@@NicksTravelAdventures I wouldn’t say worn out, I still plan to use it for a while, but considering that it is in worse shape with a 1000 km than the old one with 3000 km, I agree that definitely Salomon has to rethink its strategy.

What is your follow-up longer term review of these now that you've had these for a few months now?
@NicksTravelAdventures Жыл бұрын
Yeah they are still great, have kept their waterproofing even in saturated conditions (as in my recent hiking video), have also worn in a bit for more comfort.

amazing, thank you for the follow up reply! :)@@NicksTravelAdventures

Did you stick to the same size when you moved from Ultra3 to 4? I’m considering a similar move
@NicksTravelAdventures5 ай бұрын
Yes same size 12.5 UK. The 4's are a bit narrower but fit me fairly similarly to the 3's.

What's the padding like? You've had them for a while now, are you still pleased with them?
@NicksTravelAdventures Жыл бұрын
Yeah the padding is decent and they have been good in general, more comfortable as I wore them in a bit. The only problem is the laces, they often come loose which can be annoying when you're in the middle of a trail mud pit
